  1. Yeah, I figured that Russia would be the way to go. I didn't want to do anything on WWII, because a lot of people in the school are WWII buffs and I think a few in the class are writing on Japan, Germany, and England. On the other end of the spectrum, there is a large interest in the history department with Latin America. They just hired a Russian professor for this semester (I am taking a class with him), so not many of the history majors have had a Russian history class yet. Either way, I feel that it may be something fresh for the professor to read, and also be interesting for me to write about. Also, I believe I will be able to find a ton of primary source documents on the space race.
  2. I had my first class of my senior seminar last night, and I think Im gonna be in for a hell of a time. The class meets once a week for 2 1/2 hours. He has us reading 9 chapters a week in the beginning of the semester. The chapters are actually collections of essays from historians discussing U.S. foreign policy. He also assigns each of us a chapter to write a one page synopsis of the chapter, and then give a 10 minute oral presentation at the next class. Then by October 1st I have to write up a 7-page essay comparing two different books about a topic of my choice based on U.S. foreign relations. So I have to read 9 chapters a week, as well as two separate books, and do my other classes assignments. Then the bulk of the class is a research paper, is a 30-page monster about a topic of my choice. This bad boy is due 3 weeks before the end of the semester, so the last 3 classes will be everyone doing their own 20 minute presentation about their paper. Now that Im done with the ranting, I need a topic. Its got to be about the relationship between the U.S. and any other nation between 1861 and 1969. The only thing I can think of right now is doing research on the Cold War, in particular the space race with the Soviet Union. If anyone else has any other ideas or whatnot, let me know.
  3. I wonder who bought the cast. Who has $17,000 extra bucks to throw away on that?! My guess is that its someone eccentric.
  4. Me and the roomies just got done playing a slew of minigames from Sonic and the Secret Ring for the Wii. Its a great way to blow a few hours, especially while drinking rum & cokes...
  5. For me, we were Ninja Turtles. I was always Donatello. He was smart and I loved the bo staff.
  6. It was actually intended for all the Star Wars chicks here on the forum. Of course, there are not actually any around these days, but heres hoping to...
  7. I would really like to see Halloween. I gotta find out if my roommates saw it yet or not.
  8. That does sound pretty sweet. I'd be tossed up between Arthur and Vlad myself...
  9. What do you think of this? Palpy fall and go boom
  10. Well, the auction ends at midnight tonight, which is about 4 hours away. The cast is still stuck at $16,900. I dont think its gonna hit the $50,000 like I thought... Edit: Well it sold for $17,200 in the end. Im kinda surprised. I really thought it would have gone for at least $25,000. Now I gotta watch his show tomorrow night and see what he says about it.
  11. Yeah, I have to agree with ya E. It wasn't as good as it could have been. Christopher Walken was one of the only good things about the movie.
  12. Agreed. I missed the site. I was so bored I walked into town.
  13. I saw Superbad last week. It was mighty funny. It was filled with non-stop laughs. Today I will be seeing Balls of Fury, though Im kinda scared...
  14. Very random
  15. This semester is rough, because I have my senior seminar, which is on U.S. foreign policy (since Im concentrating on American history...there was also a seminar offered on William the Conquerer in England, and one about something going on in Asia, but I wasn't interested enough to read further). Next semester will be a cake walk. I just need four classes (thanks to my online summer classes getting stuff out of the way early). This semester Im taking: U.S. Foreign Policy Tsarist Russia Colonial Latin America (I find the ancient Americans like the Mayans and Incas and such, and the Spanish Conquest interesting) Microeconomics (I took it way back in my early college years, but they want me to take it again) Next semester I'll be taking: Microeconomics Any U.S. history class I want Any European history class I want (my school is undecided over the debate of whether Russia is part of Europe or Asia, so any Russian counts as either European or Asian history) Any other history class I want It will be a breeze next semester. Then Im outta Stoneyonta and off to Albany!!!!! Edit: By the way, I must agree with Tofu. SOCL's past couple of posts have been typotastic, which is not exactly his fortee...
  16. Must...double post...in order to...resurrect thread... I went to my History of Tsarist Russia class at 2pm today. The professor says "I am from Kazakhstan, so if you saw the movie Borat you know what to expect from me." But the class seems interesting and the professor seems cool. If I end up enjoying the class, I may take a class with him next semester. Hes teaching a class on Russia after the Bolshevik Revoluton, and hes also teaching a class on expansionism, where he compares and contrasts the Russian conquests with America's westward expansion. Im pretty keen to taking the latter class.
  17. It truly is insane. Why throw such a valuable and important representation of the series away in space?
  18. Yeah, but Han had the blaster hidden under the table. Greedo had no idea what Han had up his sleeve. I just think that the whole ordeal puts a blemish on Solo.
  19. J, I say it every time, but you have the sweetest job of all of us. Hands down.
  20. Greedo shooting first brings certain things to life. Han was not a scoundrel who only cared for himself, his wookie, and his ship. He was a lucky son of a gun. The chances of Greedo missing Han at that range are ridiculous. Greedo shooting first is pretty much a death sentence to Han. However, by some ridiculous miracle, Greedo misses, and Han returns fire. The Han Solo from ANH was a low life, and for him to fire first (in such a sneaky way) is perfectly acceptable given his character. Greedo shooting first just undermines Han. I just don't see what Lucas saw. What kind of image came to him in his twisted dreams that made him do something so...pointless. I mean, I can see the added Wampa scenes, and the added Jabba scene in ANH, and even the ridiculous musical number in Jabba's Palace in RoJ. Those are things that he changed to (in his mind) make the movie appear...fresher for a new audience. But having Greedo shoot accomplishes nothing but soil the great character who is Captain Han Solo.
  21. Right here
  22. Oh yeah. Contra kicked butt back in the day. It was ridiculously difficult without the "Capcom Code", but it was always a blast to play.
  23. It is 2:12am here and I just got in from a night on the town. It was my first bar-hopping, drunk experience of the semester and I liked it. I feel a bit like Mad now
  24. Not for nothing, but if some guy on ebay can not send me a Wii and get away with it, why cant I decide to reneg on my part of the bargain and not pay for the cast. If you ask me, its all about who's famous. Colbert is famous, so ebay will help him out. Rob is not (yet), thus he gets kicked aside.
  25. Its at $16,900 with 4 days to go. I would love to just bid $1,000,000 and then never pay and see what happens. Would Stephen Colbert sue for breach of contract?
