So we saw Harold and Kumar yesterday. It was as good as anticipated, if not better. Definitely lived up to the first one, and is worthy of being called a sequel. However, this movie did something that other previous releases have been doing the past year. What Im referring to is...well...the blatant, gratuitous showing of...male genitalia, for lack of a better word to use on these forums. I dont know what America's sudden infatuation with it is, but, as far as I can recall, it started with Borat. After Borat, there was a lull, at least as far as I know. But I have seen three movies this year in the theaters that used this for shock value/cheap laughs. The first was Dewey Cox, which was just insane. Then just recently, both Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Harold and Kumar used it as a comedy device also. It appears to me that the U.S. media is getting more...perverse recently. A lot of things are being said that wouldn't have been said on television two years ago. And now this full-frontal male nudity is parading around in theaters. Now dont get me wrong...I have no problem with the language and what not. But its just weird to being seeing things that I would never have thought to see in a movie. Its becoming common place. I mean, its not that it bothers me, because Im sure I react as the film crew wanted me to by saying "what the @#$%" and laughing, but its still such a new and odd concept to me. I can only imagine that within the next few years, rated-R movies will be indistinguishable from a porno...
