I dont know about Christensen. I saw a few of his other movies and he acted well in them. I honestly think that the reason why everyone complains about his acting and Portman's is that its because of Lucas. Back when the Original Trilogy was being done the actors would resist Lucas throwing in such corny dialog. You have to understand, an actor can be the best in the world but it wont matter if the DIRECTOR tells them to do it a certain way. I have taken a few drama classes and I can tell you that the director is the one who calls most of the shots. He dictates where the cameras go, what sort of facial expressions he wants the actors to use, the tone of the scene etc. The fact is, Lucas only did what he wanted to do and didnt care about criticisms. We have to accept that, I know we can blame Hayden and Natalie for this but thats too easy. Keep in mind they arent the ones who wrote the story or created the dialog, Lucas did. Whatever it was they said, Lucas made them. In the Originals, Lucas and Harrison Ford got into an argument about Han Solo. Harrison wanted Han to die in Empire or Return of the Jedi but Lucas didnt want that to happen. Harrison also didnt like Lucas' reply for when Leia told Han she loved him. Originally it was supposed to go: "I love you" -"I love you too", or something like that. Instead Harrison Ford got the director to let him do his line on the spot, so now: "I love you" -"I know" Which is way more in sync with Han's character. Lucas lets face it, he writes dialog that in a more fantastical world with fairies and butterflies and reindeer running around would be more appropriate. Like a kid's fairy-tale. Star Wars though succeeds in so many ways because lets face it, it embraces aspects of fantasy and molds them in with the sci-fi. For the fantasy side we have the Force, on the sci-fi side we have ships with blasters and Death Stars etc. A classic good vs. evil. Which is why a lot of people love the originals so much. Thats also why he chose to do the latter part of the story and not do the prequels originally. Anyway, I ranted long enough. I just wanted to point out that the director of the movie has a lot of say in how a scene is done. And Lucas cannot direct adult story movies very well. He does well for the kids, which is why I view the prequels as more kid movies. If you notice, after Empire Strikes Back we start seeing aspects of this kiddy cutey crap appearing like Ewoks and so on. This eventually continues into his prequels. In my opinion its due to him A) wanting to market Star Wars to a younger audience again b) get money from being able to sell toys. Remember Lucas owns 100% of Star Wars. Whatever toy that gets sold, he gets money for in royalties and so on. Anyway, just remember that the director has a lot of power and say over what gets shown in a movie to us the audience.
