Well Destro pointed me a long time ago to http://www.armadafleetcommand.com and at first I didn't think of checking, if these models would be easier to convert. So cheers go out to Destro as well for showing me that direction in the first place Most of the models are actually from XWA, but the unknown creator(s) of this Star Trek Armada 2 mod took it upon him-/themselves to cut the ~ 20 textures per XWA model down to a single one per model in their mod. And since upgrading to a newer version of my 3D prog, the way I found to create single textures myself doesn't seem to work anymore, I greatly welcome this alternative.
