Sadly, that's an issue, that's quite visible with some models. I think Rebellion's lighting engine is responsible for this, since the position of the planet also seems to affect it. But if you look closely at some of the original models, you'll also notice that fault there as well. I seem to recall, that the INT had it as well for example.

despite what you just wrote, I'd just like to point out, that you can't render animations or even pictures in gmax I do most of my stuff with 3dsmax 5, but choose gmax for the tutorials, since everybody can afford it.
