  1. So no one is going to have a go at a longer work? You guys will have a couple of months...
  2. Well, I can't recall seeing a starship ever being completely destroyed by phaser fire alone. (I could be wrong though). Phasers seem to be used for precise targeting, weapons and so forth. Remember in most of the series the Federation would rather disable a vessel and save the crew then destroy it outright in order to keep from starting a war. Heck in one Star Trek film we see the Enterprise-D fire a phaser barrage against an elderly Bird of Prey and fail to penetrate or even erode the shield. In my opinion phasers really aren't worth much. Actually I'd hate to say it but even the largest Star Trek ships seem to be significantly faster then an X-wing. In Star Trek: Nemesis we see the enormous Reman Scimitar conduct a 180 degree turn in less then four seconds... The Borg cubes can accelerate even faster then this (But they rarely use this in combat for some reason). In truth I don't think the Federation even have a 'true' line of starfighter designs, this is simply because they don't need them. The shuttles would fit under the corvette class as would the runabouts but I can't recall a single seat fighter craft employed by the federation. According to some literature I've read the Federation classifies the Galaxy class as a Dreadnaught, the Nebula class as a Battlecruiser, and the Sovereign class as a Battleship. (Meaning they'd probably end up in either the Heavy Frigate or Destroyer category compared to the Imperial classification system.
  3. Why not just use the Sith? Oh well, lets see... The Raporan Intelligence Directorate: The intelligence branch of the Raporan Military command structure, the RID also works to act in counterintelligence and paramilitary operations. Because of the obvious difficulty in inserting Raporan agents into New Republic worlds the RID relys primarily on droids and mercenaries for espionage and infiltration. In those situations where the use of a Raporan agent is required the agent will often be forced to utilize holoshrouds or some other disguise to avoid detection on New Republic worlds, the same cannot be said for infiltration of UDA facilities due to the fact that a portion of those serving there are in fact Rapora.
  4. Well the objective I think is to create a semi-balanced mod that incorporates both universes and accurately demonstrates the capabilities of both side's combat starships. In order to do that we'll have to reconcile several major differences between star wars and star trek and give both sides a level playingfield. First we'll want to ask some questions... 1. What Era or Eras of the Star Trek universes to include? 2. How different is the classification of vessels in Star Trek compared to the classifications of ships in Warlords? 3. How powerful are the respective weapons of each sides? 4. How much different are the capabilities of Star Trek and Star Wars vessels? Well, I think I'm prepared to answer some of those questions. 1. Like the Original Warlords mod we should probably start with later eras of the Star Trek Universe. We should probably start with The Next Generation Era and perhaps move back into the Motion Picture Era. 2. This posses a difficult problem for the game design... So here's a basic comparison. Federation Destroyers: Defiant Class: The fast light destroyer of the Federation fleet. Designed to counter the Borg when deployed in large numbers. Armament: 4 Pulse Phasers, 2 Torpedo Launchers, and 2-3 Phaser Banks Sabre Class: A significantly larger vessel, the Sabre is fast, maneuverable but poorly armed. Armament: 2 Pulse Phasers, 6-8 Phaser Banks, 1-2 Torpedo Launchers Up against Victory and Imperial class star ships!!! Hello? I'd say that these fast ships would be more fitting in the Heavy Corvette or Frigate class. Unforunately this means that most Federation ships fall into the Heavy Frigate or Frigate Category. In order to come up with Destroyers and Cruisers will require some research. (Perhaps a Sovereign or Galaxy could fit in with the Destroyer class but nothing larger.) 3. Well, this point has been and will probably remain to be of a great amount of debate. I'd probably say that the torpedoes in Star Trek are perhaps significantly more powerful then those in Star Wars, but they are also more ballisitc in nature. When fired they tend to remain on target for only a short period of time and rarely maneuver to follow the target, I'd advocate having them put in game in a manner similar to the blasters and disruptors, you can miss with them. Phasers, well phasers are almost something of a joke. They should be effective against subsystems, missiles, fighters, and corvettes but of little to no value against capital ships except in targeting the subsystems. Disruptors and Pulse Phasers, for playabilities sake I'd say that these weapons are roughly equal to a heavy turbolaser in effectiveness. They also have a higher recharge rate then their star wars cousins. 4. Well, I'm going to advocate something rather extreme. Lets not give any of the Star Trek ships hyperspace capability. Instead lets give them a lot of speed. There are three reasons for this, firstly Warp drive is significantly slower then hyperspace travel, secondly Star Trek ships will continue to engage the enemy at warp speeds and impulse drives are known to science to have significantly greater thrust then ion drives. A Star Trek Cruiser like the Sovereign class can probably race along at speeds equal to a X-wing. In Star Trek: First Contact we saw the Enterprise move past a Borg cube estimated to be perhaps as large as 3 kilometers across in less then 3 seconds. Star Trek ships will have to move much faster, and use an AI system similar to the corvettes and fighters in homeworld 2.
  5. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, are you trying to create a new branch of the Raporan military or is this a command. Explain.
  6. Come on guys, post!
  7. Cain are you half asleep? Your typing seems kind of sloppy... Well a couple of points, the Athenian Democracy was just as or more militant then the Spartans... The US army is arguably the best trained and equipped in the world, but its not designed to fight Terrorists but to fight a conventional war against a conventional foe (I think Army planners are starring at China as the next big threat.) Still they get the job done. In terms of performance in peace keeping operations however the British actually perform better then the US. No wonder violence in the British zone of occupation is relatively rare. Conquest? Wars of conquest are so 19th Century. Most every nation that has started a war for land or territory since the start of 1900 has been the side thats lost. While it could be said that a Democratic Iraq would side with the US and provide us with Oil they wouldn't necessarily be a portion of an American Empire.
  8. Um, droid names actuall are usually an achronym Cybernetic Protocol Officer (C-3PO) So... I8-U2 (Ha ha...) Intelligence and Utility?
  9. It seems Al Qaeda is attempting to open up more fronts on the war on terror...
  10. Well, heres to try and increase the amount of writing on this board... This is a competition between those writters on this forum, for bragging rights and the all important Stellar Trophy... which I will be creating. There will be 4 categories to compete in... Star Wars Novella: Any story 10,000 words and up based on the Star Wars Universe. Non-Star Wars Novella: Any story above 10,000 words not based on the Star Wars Universe. Star Wars Short Story: Any story below 10,000 words based on the Star Wars Universe. Non-Star Wars Short Story: Any story below 10,000 words not based on the Star Wars Universe. I myself will not be competing in the awards other then as a guide. For your Short Story to be accepted post it here before August 30th. The Novellas will not be due until to months afterwards. Once collected the stories will be put to a vote and the one with the greatest amount of support will collect the digital trophy for that category (I'd add it to my signature if I won.) Any questions, comments, concerns? Please post them here.
  11. Actually the Imperial class is powered by a solar ionization reactor, the nuclear reactors feed directly into the engines and utilize their highly charged radioactive particles to propel the vessel.
  12. Well, if its possible for a ship to make surrounding vessels more accurate or maneuverable we might want to add command and control ships. Well, rebalancing won't be our primary aim, I'd like to aim more for realistic accuracy for the abilities of the units, which is more along the approach Eville has taken with the Warlords mod. I mean, there are units in that thing that just about beat everything!
  13. EvilleJedi I heard from Cain that you're planning on adding Star Trek to the Warlords Mod, and that you're looking for a Trekkie to set up the ships, they're armament, weapons capabilities and the like? I'm willing to help and I've already written some Star Trek vs Star Wars fanfiction which has appeared here and on the EAW boards.
  14. Well, there are two possible reasons why the Shield Generators / Sensor Domes aren't protected by the shields. If they're sensor domes then they must use some form of light wave or radio wave to detect other vessels. It's possible that the shields would deflect, absorb, or even warp these transmissions forcing the sensors to be placed above the protection of the shields themselves. If they're shield generators another possibility exists. The generators may generate an extreme amount of heat which must be dissipated. It's possible that the shield generators are mounted in an exposed position above the shields so that the heat came be dissipated directly into space in a manner similar to the exhaust port on the death star.
  15. WARLORDS ROCKS!!! Perhaps another thing I should ask Eville is if he's ever taken a look at making some units for Bridge Commander. That game would be great for putting together a Star Wars Capital ship command simulation. Hmm, he's looking for some Trek savy individuals for adding the Star Trek stuff. I wonder if he's got a clue as to just how big that could get, Federation, Dominion, Borg, Ferengi, Cardassian, Romulan, Klingon. Well if anyone can reconsile Star Wars and Star Trek fairly, I might give it a go.
  16. I know (I play Warlords!), and even then its possible that Eville could have missed a few classes of vessel... Though I think we'll take that on when we come to it. RPG stats? We've got so many different available sources and some of the vessels and equipment in EAW may not exist in other sources. Maybe we could base some of the ship stats from the Warlords mod.
  17. Well, here's some more ideas. Basically here's what I'd like to accomplish in each possible release... Rebellion Reality Mod v0.1: Historical unit costs in credits (Think really expensive), realistic range, accuracy, and scale for all units originally in the game. Rebellion Reality Mod v0.15: Remapping of all planets to accomidate the new ranges of all the units (Each ground map should be at least 20 kilometers across, the maximum range of star wars heavy weaponary often is around 16 kilometers due to the fact that all weapons fire is limited to line of sight firing, beyond that the bend of the horizon stops a shot from reaching its target.) Rebellion Reality Mod v0.2: Rebalance the units and add a new system of buildings for unit production. Reworking of hero units to accomodate their realistic abilities and to enable them to be equally damageable and vulnerable. Possible means would be to give Jedi near instantaneous regeneration and normal health or only slightly higher health (Compared to the average soldier) to simulate the deflection of blaster bolts (If not included already). Rebellion Reality Mod v0.3: A new system for unit production based on planets and known corporate entities. Possesion of Kuat enables the construction of KDY facilities throughout your systems in order for the production of KDY vessels and equipment. Other examples of planets or corporations based on this system would include Kamino, Rendili Star Drives, Sienar Fleet Systmes, Mon Calamari, Corellia, and etc... Some units from these corporations will be available without the possesion of the facitities but at much heightened prices (Equivalent to buying on the black market instead of from the company itself.) The amount of credits generated by individual planets will be increased... v0.4: Units of the era not included in original release added. v0.5-v0.8: Galaxy Expansion addition of many planets and trade routes. Hopefully we'll be able to equal or perhaps even surpass the number of systems available in the Star Wars Rebellion. Addition of Late Clonewar units as well as additional units from the ROTJ and beyond. v0.9: Rebalancing and begin debugging. v1.0: Final and stable release... Additions beyond it may be possible but at this point, whats left to add?
  18. Tuvax and Ioor would probably work best in the Stand Firm subplot, they are afterall fleet commanders, though I suppose Tuvax could jump to some of the other plots, It's your choice, we're going to be a little more freeform from this point on I think.
  19. Well right now I'm trying to figure out how to have the program read commands from a txt file. I'd like to make it so that the program would be easily moddable, but its tough going. If I can't get it to do what I want it may just be impossible to use the compiler (Which would absolutely stink).
  20. Best bet would be to make it a mod of Star Trek: Bridge Commander. That would be Ideal, and they've already got some people that created a ST vs SW mod. Actually the idea of starting out as a recruit isn't very good. Maybe starting out as a comissioned lieutenant on some System Patrol Craft or the XO of some larger vessel would be better. As for flying Ties and X-wings... sorry guys, this ain't Starfighter command, different ranks, different command structure, different everything.
  21. Not yet, I'm still learning the ropes of the thing.
  22. Imagine... Star Wars: Fleet Command Work your way up through the ranks of the Imperial or Rebel fleet as the Galactic Civil War wages around you. Command an Imperial Star Destroyer hunting an illusive Rebel Frigate. Slip through imperial lines in a Mon Calamari Cruiser out Commerce raiding. Issue orders to fellow captains as you attain the higher ranks of Commodore and Admiral. Change the course of the Galactic Civil war through a Dynamic Campaign Generator where every action, mission, and event changes the balance of military. Personalize your ship through weapons upgrades and modifications as you find the most effective way to hunt down your enemy to achieve promotions and decerations.
  23. It utilizes the same principal except applies it to gravity. Say you're accelerating in a spacecraft at 9.8m/s/s what do you feel like? Well you'd feel like you're standing on earth, therefore no experiment can be performed from within a closed spacecraft (Without windows) to prove weither you're accelerating in space or are under the affect of gravity. Einstien therefore said that gravity bends the fabric of spacetime and enables it so that a massive gravitational field (A Black Hole) displays the same effects as moving at a relativistic velocity (Near the speed of light) with time dilation. You're going to have to read some of the other thought experiments to get Einstein's drift... To summarize however Relativity can be broken down into a number of simple laws. 1. The speed of light is the only constant in the universe, and no force even gravity can act instantaneously. 2. The speed of light cannot be surpassed due to the fact that to do so would require an infinite amount of energy. 3. Clocks (Biological, Chemical, Physical) slow down as you approach the speed of light. 4. Mass increases as you near the speed of light. 5. Length and distance contract as you near the speed of light. 6. Gravity creates the same effects as velocity on spacetime. I'm paraphrasing, but thats basically all of the ones I can think of.
  24. Thats basically what I had in mind.
  25. You miss understand, from the point of view of the traveler he would have arrived at his destination at the same moment as he left if he were traveling at the speed of light, from an outside perspective however the traveler would take time to reach his destination but he'd be the exact same age as when he left. You must read the twin paradox... Later I'll explain Quantum Mechanics and String Theory if you want.
