  1. There have been alot of people suffering from hackers according to their news page. Just in case any one noticed, I have indeed started over (reset my account). I am now humans and plan on playing a more defensive game to start. My aggressive play style before didn't fit me too well
  2. Have you made sure that your DirectX version is up-to-date, as well as your graphics card and chipset drivers? Depending on how old your motherboard and/or video card are this might be the problem. If it is none of those things, take a look at your settings. I know that occasionally maps that are "non-Star Wars" (that is, the original maps) can cause the game to crash after loading the Ship UI. If it still crashes on a Star Wars map, make sure your resources aren't set to give you injections every ten seconds. The RU inkections might not cause the game to crash, but even so, it will leave you with a negative balance should you get into the game. Now, if none of the above works we'll have to get Eville in here.
  3. I always try and keep a balance of fighters and bombers. Even when my fleet is loaded mostly with TIE Interceptors I keep enough for two sizable "groups" of bombers. In my last game as the Rebels I found that a single "group" of B-Wings was enough to deal with most of the twenty-five SSDs I had to deal with. And since I had two "groups", I could probably have dealt withe the entire Imperial fleet without moving my capitol ships.
  4. I think this was a common problem at one time, and it had something to do with your graphics settings. Try lowering your rez to around 1024x768 and turing off shadows. If it lets you in, just tinker around with the rest of your settings to get the best look/play balance. If it still doesn't let you in we can work from there.
  5. Well, that and the two seasons of her stupid TV show. I'd watch "Big Brother" before her show.
  6. Have you checked the "official" (battlefront.net or something) for modding tools? I know, when I was last there, that there were a few new innovations. Since Battlefront 2 will essentially be the same game, it might be possible to use the same modding tools for both.
  7. I would suggest you do it hte easy way and go through LucasArts. When you order, make it for two copies. When I got my copy of the game (the second time, after my first copy was sucked into my CD rom and scratched to hell) I also got a second boxed copy. So I now have one that I use and a second that is currently still in a sealed box... or you could just buy two copies off of Ebay.
  8. I think that we should also remember that much of the "incompitence" on the part of both factions can be chalked up to Palpatine. The fleet in the opening sequence was used in place of a tactical strike team to capture the chanceller because Palpatine didn't really want to be captured, but he had to make it look like the CIS gave a good effort. This might also explain the lack f tactics. Blasting in and out makes more sense speed wise than engaging in a tactical battle. I think that's the trouble with the way the plot was organized. Wereally don't know how much of what happens was at the orders of Palpatine/Sidious.
  9. Although the TIE Defender has shields and more firepower, the speed and maneuverability of the TIE Interceptor make it my favorite. Had the Empire been able to produce more of them I think many battles might have ended differently (though their lack of warheads makes them slightly less effective overall compared to the TIE Defender or X-Wing).
  10. Probably because the files is more than 100mb in size. The wait is well worth it though.
  11. Yeah, I know how that feels. I only had that book for one extra day and I get dinged with a $2 fee! Wait, wrong library...
  12. Well, if you use the "Mass Edit" feature you can lower the cost of your ships by a percentage, and then lower the opposing force's ships by the same ammount. I's say a reduction in cost of about 30-35% would sufficiently speed your game up without making it feel like you're cheating.
  13. I don't usually build massive fleets, but spread my resources across my systems to create an effective defensive screen. I do have one fleet that is larger than the others, usually consisting of: 12x Lancer Frigates 15x Carrak Light Cruisers 6x Victory Star Destroyers 6x Victory II Star Destroyers 8x Imperial Star Destroyers 10x Imperial II Star Destroyers That's the basic layout. From here I will either add an assortment of smaller ships, or install a command ship. I usually go for the latter, in the form of an SSD. Though I wasn't responsible, the most surpising fleet I've come across was just today. I decided to take the Rebellion for a spin (I think I've played them twice in history). The only modification I made was to reduce the cost of Death Stars in the hope that the AI would build one. After amassing a fleet in the outer rim (20 Assault Frigates, 12 Nebulon-B Frigates, 8 Corellian Gunships, 6 of those catfish looking ones (CC something), 2 of the interdicters, 8 Liberator Cruisers, 15 Dauntless cruisers and a bluwark) I decided the time was right to strike Coruscant. I sent my fleet there, sending a second fleet of only Bulk Transports loaded with troops twenty days later (that way they don't get destroyed in the battle). When my attack fleet arrives, what are they greated by? 25 FRIGGING SSDS!! At first I thought I had made a change to it's cost values, but when I checked they were normal. What made me even more angry was that after narrowly defeating these stupid things, I get attacked by a second Imperial fleet composed of your standard number of ISD IIs loaded with an insane number of fighters.
  14. Have you tried playing it without the no cd crack? I've experienced the same sort of problem with other games that I have attempted to crack which is why I've simply resigned myself to using either the game CD or an image of it.
  15. I hope that was directed at the movie and not me. I also found this. I'm pretty sure things like this only happen at Wal-Mart. EDIT:I just came across this. That is the real reason no one messes with the US! I don't want them to take my lake too!
  16. I'm sure most of us would agree that Nintendo has fallen behind in the consol gaming industry. The GameCube probably could have been more, but Nintendo limited it's titles to those aimed more at younger generations... that, and it really wasn't much competition for PS2 and Xbox. With all the hype about Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo revealed its next-gen system before E3. The new system is currently known only as Revolution, and what I've read (though admittedly industry hype) sounds pretty cool... and that from a non-consol gamer! So, here is the one-sided babble on the sytems specs from Nintendo: Now the capabilities of the system are a little vague, only stating that it has a processor from IBM and a graphics card from ATI. That could mean any thing (especially since the GameCube also had an ATI graphics processor). Basically the only thing that really interested me was the ability to download 20 years of games dating from the NES to the N64. Sure they're not cutting edge games, but right now I couldn't play a good game of Golden Eye with friends without digging through boxes to find my old N64... hey, sometimes you get the urge to play something with a little nostalgic value! So, does any one have any more info on this, like how powerful it will be, especially in comparison to Sony's and Microsith's systems?
  17. But why does he not reestablish his illusion? He has nothing to gain from looking evil, and if he looked as he did before, he might get a little more suport... then again, when you're going to declare yourself Emperor, what does it matter if you're ugly?
  18. I found this. I don't want any one spouting political view in either direction, just their opinion on the video itself. I personally find it sad that anyone uses Star Wars in any way to advance political stances... then again, it is sort of funny.
  19. If any one watched the last Family Guy, the end scene was by far my fav. Peter is recieving a medal for bravery and the whole scene is done like the Yavin Medal Ceremony, complete with Chewie, R2 and 3PO.
  20. Sure there were some things that could have been added to this movie, but it wouldn't have made sense to have five movies two hours in length, and one somewhere around four hours Since some people seem to think these movies shouldn't be pitted against the OT, and that they are of a different class, let's compare RotS to the LotR movies: If one were to take the RotS novel and adapt it 100% to film you would have a movie the lenght of LotR movies (individualy), somewhere around the three to four hour mark. If you did the same with the LotR novels you would have three movies around the six hour mark. What Lucas did was cut out anything that didn't advance the plot as it was established in bot the first two PT movies and in the OT. Let's reflect on what could have been had he done what many of you suggest: More in-depth opening battle: So, we see something more along the lines of the Battle of Endor. Entertaining? Of course! Who wouldn't want to see that. But then, the battle wasn't really the point, was it? We know Paplitane was in charge of the droids, so the whole battle was nothing more than one step in moving his plans forward (ie. eliminating Dooku). The plot focussed on Obi-Wan and Anakin. If we saw more of the battle we would hear complaints that breaching Grievous' ship was dragged out too much. Longer Duels: Seeing as these were by-far the longest lightsaber duels in any of the films I think this is moot. However, I too would have liked a little more action between Dooku and Anakin, but again, nothing is really lost as it is. There is only so much you can do in a "sword" fight without repeating yourself. Now someone (NIIIC?) mentioned the Jedi Temple. I think there was a reason for cutting it short. I too would have liked to watch Anakin waste some Jedi scum, but how many Jedi were actually there? Many of them would have been taking part in the war with only a handful left at the Temple. I think the real reason for cutting this scene short was that no one wants to watch Anakin cut down a bunch of children, who probably were the most numerous. Jumps around/Too fast: This film is faster paced than the other five, but again, you're trying to watch Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme, Palpitane, Grievous and the Jedi Council, all of whom play major roles. I think he covered everything pretty well. If we look at other movies, like LotR, there are maybe two or three (max) groups that we are watching constantly. Kashyyk too short: Yes, it was. This is almost as bad as midichlorians. All that said, there was something I really liked: the Jedi Prophecy. In the end we see that Anakin does bring balance to the Force, just not when the Jedi Council thought he would. First he eliminated the Jedi, and then in RotJ he deals with the Sith as well. He was just a little more thorough than the prophecy stated .
  21. I agree almost 100%. Obi-Wan and the Emperor were by far the best actors in the film, and I would even go so far as to say that Ewan shone the brightest. Hayden and Portman were indeed markedly improved, Hayden especially. I think he was more comfortable with his role this time and his lines were written better. I've never really found Portman to be that impressive in these films. As for Duko... well, I think people are trying to make him into a bigger character than he was meant to be. He and Maul were only meant to fill the apprentices seat until the end of RotS, and I thought it best that they dealt with him quickly rather than dragging his demise out until most of the way through the film. They could have given him more lines or extended the duel a little, but it wouldn't have added anything to the story, so keeping it short and sweet probably worked better. I also found the shell-like ammunition of the larger guns striking, and it does reflect well against the weapons twenty years later. As for missiles: the Empire was more into saving money, so that explains why TIE Fighters lack missiles. The Rebellion was cash-strapped, so they were forced to use them sparingly. Or maybe fighters evolved to the point where missiles weren't as effective? I suppose we'll just have to pick the explaination we like best. I found the battles to be reminiscent of 19th century combat. The two sides simply form up and throw themselves at one another. Remember, there hasn't been a real war since the formation of the Republic, so tactics have had a long time to degrade. By the OT we see that the Empire has perfected it's tactics. We also know that the Jedi have no regard for the lives of the clones. In the opening scene we see Obi-Wan simply use them as meat shields so he and Anakin can get onto the enemy ship (which is also why they weren't harried very much, answering one of your points below). Now, I don't want to be nit-pickey, but you say the action happens at the "very start, and the middle to the end". So that leaves us with a small lull between "very start" and "middle". If there was nothing but action there wouldn't be any plot. There had to be a spot to develope events, and I think Lucas chose a good spot. I agree that the battle on Kashyyk was far too short. There should have been more fighting. more to do with Chewie etc. However, I again point out that extending the rest of them wouldn't gain anything. Obi-Wan and Padme talking longer would just be five extra minutes of her not believing him. He knew he couldn't convince her and had resigned himslef to simply stow away to get what he wanted. We also know that she truly didn't believe him until she had talked to Anakin in person, so more of "I don't believe you, he's a good person" would gain nothing. Yoda and the Emperor... well, there could have been a bit more there, just for entertainments sake, but I don't think anything was lost with it the way it is. The declaration of the Empire would have dragged out a bit. One can only say so much before "And now there is the first Galactic Empire". Unless it was extended after that point, which would have been more clapping... After looking at all of the Jedi from the council during Episode I (those that I could remember their names) on StarWars.com, I haven't found reference to a Council member not of the rank of Master. I hadn't noticed this. I'll have to pay more attention next time. The battle raging around the heroes was actually pointless, so we didn't need to know who was in command. We do know that Obi-Wan was in command of the mission to rescue the Chancellor. I think having Tarkin play the small roll he did worked best It shows us how close he was to the Emperor. If the Death Star was as far along as it was at the end of the movie, he must have been building it for some time (which means it took more than 20 years to build the first Death Star). Maybe more fighting, but any more dialogue would have dragged it out. Definitely. This should have been more than a footnote and an excuse to put Chewie in the movie. I also think it would have been funny to see a droid walking across the beach and picking up it's severed arm . I thought this duel was just right. It was very similar to the Vader vs Luke duel in ESB. Mostly fighting, only a little dialogue. At first I thought it was a stalemate too, but we get the impression that Yoda had given his all once he fell to the bottom of the senate chamber and we see that, though he had a little scare, the Emperor still had pleanty of pep left. If Yoda had of continued there was a good chance he woulnd't have made it out alive. By making his exit when he did he basically ensured he would be able to take some role in the rebellion agianst the Empire, though he wasn't sure what that role would be until the twins were born. I agree with out here. I had the impression that Anakin and Obi-Wan were more like father and son than brothers, and there was pleanty of oppertunity for emotional tie-in that were taken advantage of. There is something I'm a little confused about here. People (not just SM, but those in the other thread) have been finding faults in this film that where in the OT as well. Scenes were too short? Look back at the OT. With the exception of the Battle of Hoth (all of the main players were in one place there) there is so much scene jumping it's not funny. In ANH we jump from Luke to Vader to the Droids to Vader, to the Droids to Vader, to Luke and the Droids, to Vader etc. We have the same Luke/Vader/Han and Leia happening in ESB (though at a slower rate for sure) in ESB, and then it picks back up in RotJ (slow in the start, faster during the Battle of Endor). For a beter idea, compare the duels in this movie to those in the OT. I'd say Anakin vs Obi-Wan is about as long as Vader vs Luke in ESB. Yoda vs Paplpitane is probably as long as Luke vs Vader in RotJ. And I'm certain Mace vs Palpitane is about as long as Obi-Wan vs Vader in ANH. As for lulls in the movies: the first half of Bespin, everything at Jabbas Palace until Luke comes in and anything in the Ewok town. I'd say RotS did a good job of avoiding boring parts. I think that if the OT were released for the first time today you would all find the same faults in it as you have in RotS. It's not fair to hold one movie to a different set of standards than it's peers. If we are to judge RotS we must judge ANH, ESB and RotJ by the same standards. Just a last note. There is one continuaty error no one has picked up on yet: how is it the Emperor is deformed by Force Lightning, but Luke comes out with little more than a singed shirt and some ruffled hair?
  22. I think you may have to resign yourself to buying online. There have been many people here looking for a copy of the game (most of whom I think were hoping for a free and illegal solution) and the only sources we can find are eBay and the LucasArts.com store. You might get lucky if you check the used game section of your local PC retailer, or they might even have collecters edition (that's not the official name, more along the lines of Lucas Arts Archives or some such) tucked away on one of their shelves. Just look for a white box.
  23. While I didn't actually play the game, I did enjoy collecting the cards themselves, especially the Imperial cards. I no longer have most of them, but I have kept my Death Star II series cards. I'm only missing one admiral (Chiraneau (sp?)) and a few of the Admiral's Orders. I was rather luckey to get Lord Vader and the Emperor early on. The Death Star I had to trade for, but the Executor was also found early in my buying spree.
  24. I have to side with DC on this one. When you look at TPM and AotC you find that Lucas relied heavily on his special effects, basically making them the focus of the movie in a "look what I can do" way. In RotS we see the same fantastic special effects, but they aren't our focus any more. We pay more attention to the actors and what they are doing and saying rather than watch a bunch of CG guys get blown away. Now, almost every one has complained about the constant switching of scenes. This was not only necessary but effective. I don't want to give too much away, but I will sum it up thusly: In the beginning of the movie Padme isn't "showing" her pregnancy. So, by the end of the movie we know that somewhere around nine months has passed, give or take a month or two. How else can you cover nine months of content but to rappidly fire through all of the most important events surrounding the main characters? This is also an effective meathod of placing the audience into the same mindset as the characters. The Jedi are confused as to what exactly is going on, the whole of the Republic is in turmoil and no one knows who they can trust. By the end of the movie you've been thrown around from scene to scene enough to make you pretty damn dissoriented. That's the point! Now, short scenes and "flipflopping" betweens scenes also had a purpose. Lucas was trying to show you that events are unfolding at the same time. If he had Character Y do something, show the whole secene, then go to Character L doing their thing you would think that that is the order of things. With the way it was arranged you know that Y and L are doing their thing at the same time. This isn't the first movie to do it. The rappid switching is simply to add suspense. Now, I know the death of the Jedi was pretty quick, but the order was givin to all troops at the same time. The Jedi were simply caught by surprise and overwhelmed. It should have been quick. Ok, so then there are these love scenes. I knew that most people would complain about them, but that's because you're not looking at them as character development only as "eew, mushey stuff!". So what is the point of them? They show us that there was good in Anakin (if you caught the mumble near the end of the movie you know that). Padme was the good. She saw it, and we saw it. We see his transition to the Dark Side and yet every time he is with Padme his is the nice, friendly Jedi we knew. When she dies it represents the death of all that was good in Vader. Until he discovers that Luke is alive there was nothing for him. If you watch the OT you see that Luke assume the role his mother did, eventually redeeming his father. I thought this was the best of the Star Wars movies. Everything is wrapped up if you look closely enough. Yoda goes into exile because A) he can't defeat the Emperor and B) because he knows that at some point he will need to take on the burden of training one of the Skywalker twins in the ways of the Force. We see the Emperor take power. We see Alderaan and Kashyyk. We see some other things near the very end that I won't elaborate on, but those who have seen it know what I'm talking about. You need to look at this objectively. This is not your typical explosion-esplosion-death-death-more-death-plot-advances-death-explosion-end type of movie. I think those of you who didn't like it went in thinking that and came out proving yourself right.
  25. Well, I guess I'll put my two credits in: First off, don't go for a name brand. Yes, you'll get good service, but unless you buy and Alienware, you're not getting a "gaming system". That said, Alienware will suck you dry for a system you could easily have built for less. You're just paying for a nice case and a name. So, I would suggest the following: Processor: Intel Pentium 4 660, 3.6 GHz, 2MB L2, 800 MHz FSB, Socket LGA775, HT Technology Now, normally I would suggest and AMD, but nowadays I don't. Why? Well, it's nice that you can use more than a Gig of RAM with the 64-bit processors, and it's also nice that they tend to run faster than Intels. The down side is that you have ot get Windows XP 64-bit to take advantage of them. That version of XP is seriousley bugged and not worth your time. Now, despite the few drawbacks to Intels I've listed above, you get one big advantage. Sure you can't use more than a gig of RAM, but you can get faster RAM. AMDs are limited to PC-3200 RAM whereas Intels can take advantage of DDR-2 RAM, allowing you to use up to PC-5400. This would more than compensate for your limit of 1 gig. Price: $795.00 CAD Motherboard: Asus P5AD2-E Premium Intel 925XE Chipset DDR 2 w/8-Ch Audio,IEEE 1394a/b,GB Lan x2 PCI-E X1, PCI-E X16 This MB has the required socket for the above processor, as well as sockets that support the number of pins for DDR 2. Now, there may be some extra things on it (such as the 8-Ch Audio) that you won't want. Asus is usually a good brand, but I have known some people to get lemons. I suggest you buy a sound card in addition to the onboard sound here, not because there is anything wrong with onboard peripherals, but it is easier to do it now than worry about it later, should your onboard sound die (as it did with me). I should have said this before, but most of the title is features on the item, only the first part in the item's name. Price: $282.00 CAD Memory/RAM: Corsair XMS 2 TWIN2X Matched Pairs 2x512MB Xtreme Memory DDR2 667Mhz PC5400 240-pin Unbuffered I've never had any problems with Corsair memory. It's not as well known as Kingston, but my pricing source doesn't carry PC-5400 Kingston memory. The added bonus to this RAM is that it is paired. That means that they were both produced in the same batch, making it more likely they will work better together. Price: $326.00 CAD Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro w/ External I/O Hub and Remote YOu can't go wrong with the Sound Blaster cards, even the cheapies. This one, however, is not a cheapie, and will certainly do you well. When plugged into a great sound system, you really get into your games! Price: $262.00 CAD Video Card: BFG GeForce 6800Ultra OC 256MB DDR3 8x AGP Dual DVI While NVIDIA is a good company, these BFG versions of their cards are better for th hardcore gamer. Don't ask me what it is, because I don't know, but every one prefers them to the ones pumped out by NVIDIA proper. Now, if you do a little altering with your MoBo you can probably connect two of these puppies up, but at the moment it's not really worth it. If you want to be safe for the future, adjust your MoBo so you at least have the option for two of these so that when the next generation of video cards comes out, you can pop another one of these into your system and never fall behind. There is also a model of this card that uses a Water Block, but the rest of your system must be equiped to use this as well. I should also point out that your chances of finding this card anywhere are slim at the moment. Due to high demand there is a slight shortage. You could get on a waiting list though. Price: $619.00 CAD Cooling: It's Up to You Ok, so in a gaming system this is very important, but it all comes down to how your organise your system. Water cooled is great, very effective, but in the end a pain in the but. Fans are much easier to install, maintain and replace, but they're not as effective. So, what to do? Well, I went for a Thermaltake case. Ultra-quiet fans (seven of them) to keep most of my system cool and a Thermaltake Volcano 11 for my CPU. This case allows me to moniter the temperature of my processor right on the front. If it goes beyon a designated temperature, it beeps at me, allowing me to crank my Volcano 11 up a notch or two. I'm not going to cover cases since it's really what you like the look of, but I find that my case - though a little large and heavy - is very good. Price: Depends What You Get Storage/ Hard Drives: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 EIDE 250GB ATA-133 7200RPM 16MB Buffer There are probably better brands out there (I know there are), but price wise this is good. You're getting 250 GB of space at 7200 RPM. I don't think you'll need more than that any time soon. Price: $162.00 CAD CD/DVD/RW Drives: LG GSA-4163 Black DVD +/-R/RW 16x16x4x4x5 Dual layer IDE OEM and LG (CDR-8162B) 16X DVD-ROM Drive You'll want two drives if you want to burn/copy DVDs (duh!), and LG is probably the best brand. Both of the above models are available in both black and white, depending on which you prefer. Ooh, nifty! Price: $63.00 and $28.00 respectively So, assuming I haven't missed anything, and that you have a functioning monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers you have a grand total of: $2537.00 CAD So, if you figure in the exchainge rate you'll be around $2200 US, giving you some room for a case and any added peripherals you want. Of course, if you double the video card you won't be able to do much else. This also does not take into account any taxes. All-in-all a good system for less than what you would pay Alienware.
