Who's stronger, Yoda or Emperor Palpatine?
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Darth_Rob's topic in General Discussion
I don't think that Yoda sensing the deaths of the other Jedi would have effected his ability to fight. Any Force-user would have sensed that, even Palpatine, and would have been equally effected. It's really just a sudden fluxuation in the Force. I think in the end the Emperor would have been the victor, though to be sure it would have been close. -
There really isn't that much to discuss at the moment in the General Discussion forum. I know there's been lots of posting in the other forums. We need a debate of some form to get things moving.

It's sad when an actor who was so willing to go to conventions passes away. I know he will be missed by every Imperial fan out there.

The Grand Admiral is Going to Europe!
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Grand_Admiral_Thrawn's topic in Outside Interests
Damn, I guess I'll have to make a stop at Portsmouth after all. The Victory is something I want to see while I'm there. I know that they've just finished repaires in preparation for the bi-centenial of Trafalger Day. -
The Grand Admiral is Going to Europe!

Really my only reason for visiting London is for the museums, antique shops and books stores. I don't really have much interest in Buckingham Palace, so I think I'll take your advice and avoid it. Trafalgar Square I can always walk past, or through, depending on the type of shops I can find around it. I'm afraid I've no knowledge of the layout of of London, so I could definitely use some suggestions there. The British Museum will certainly be a stop, and if the Victoria and Albert Museum covers as much of Imperial Britain as I think it would, I should certainly like to go. Since I'm in a rather small city (only about 80,000 people) any zoo is worth visiting, so I'll be sure to stop by the monkeys on a Monday . I might be mistaken about Blunderbuss Antiques being in London, but I did hear it mentioned on the bonus features disk of the Master and Commander movie. if you can find any other Regency era antique shops in London I would be most obliged. Camden Lock and Notting Hill... well, since I've never heard of either of them it's safe to assume I'll not be visiting either of them. My neighbour, who just finished visiting family in England a month ago, said that the Roman Baths at Bath were set to re-open, so with luck they will be when I come. I'm a little disillusioned with the modern day Royal Navy, so Portsmouth wasn't high on my list of places to see, and a bawdy house full of drunken sailors makes it less appealing... Now, Scotland is a definite stop for me. I don't plan on making this trip alone (for safety reasons, as well as the fact that it would be very lonely) and my friend has family in Scotland. Once there we may have transportation, or at the very least lodgings. Seeing as I currently have a full face of hair and look to be of the Middle-Eastern persuasion, I'm avoid Inverness. Glastonbury sounds interesting; I may have to make a stop there. If I'm lucky I might be able to split my trip in two. The first, lasting a week, would allow me to see much of England and Scotland. The second, taken some time later, probably in the summer, would get me to the mainland (though I would still try and make it to Switzerland for my cheese, and maybe drop a line on Mad). I really want to see Ireland as well, since that is where my family originated from, but I don't see how I can fit it in... -
The Grand Admiral is Going to Europe!
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Grand_Admiral_Thrawn's topic in Outside Interests
At the moment I only have a few planned visits. First is, of course, Buckingham Palace, though this will probably amount to "Oh, there it is" and off I go. Then there is the British Parliament and House of Lords, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, the HMS Victory, and there is a museum I think by the name of the Maritime Museum that covers much of Britain's nautical history. There is also a small shop somewhere in London called Blunderbuss Antiques that I want to look through. I really don't expect the above to take too much time, other than the museum. I'm not going to do any scheduled tours or anything of the sort (save for the Victory), so if I'm Lucky I can cover the above in one day. Now I know that Europe is quite connected via trains, but how thorough this is I may be off on. I want to see Bath and parts of Scotland, but without a car to get around this may prove tricky. There is always the good old cab, but if prices are anything like those here I'd rather walk... As for the mainland, I had hoped to drop by Juno Beach where Canadian troops landed on D-Day and visit the memorial on Vimy Ridge. I also wanted to see Berlin and some of the castles in Germany. Again, my plans may be hindered by a lack of transportation. I plan on making a stop in Switzerland no matter what. I'd like to get some cheese (not kidding) and maybe open a bank account (OK, kidding on this one ). So far I think my itinerary is looking more like a two week trip rather than one and I fear that if I go during my reading week I'll have to cut everything from the mainland out and have a very busy schedule. Does any one know how the hostels are over there? Rather than spend a fortune on hotels I planned on keeping my accommodation costs low and staying in hostels (unless someone advises against it that is) -
Well, I've decided to bite the bullet and take a trip to Europe. Although this won't happen until next year (I'm planning on heading over during my reading week/March break) I'd like to get some input on places to visit. I know that a week really isn't long enough to see everything (indeed, much of anything), and I might end up postponing it until May so I can take two weeks. Initially my plan was to see everything of interest (to me) in England where I plan to land and then cross the Channel to the mainland. There's really nothing that I know of to see on the mainland, mostly war memorials and what not, but then I'm rather ignorant of what there is in Europe. So, that said, I can cut the number of possible locations down. First, France, though I'm sure beautiful, is really of no interest to me. Sure I'd like to see the Louvre and some other site of Paris, but with a restricted schedule it's automatically cut from the list. As is Italy and any Mediterranean countries. I think I'd like it too much and never come back . So, other than those locales, what should top my list? Is there a good restaurant I should have a bite at, a nice village or a bridge to contemplate? I'm not looking only for the touristy type things, I want something that most people who visit Europe wouldn't go and see!

Congrats Bill, or should I just call you Commodore?

Grats Mad, we knew you'd make it sooner or later .

If we want the source code Jahled's solution is the only way to go. LucasArts simply won't give it away. Imagine us extending the life of a game that is better than EaW, resulting in lost sales to LucasArts.

Hmm, sounds like an interesting movie. I'll keep my eye open. As for BitTorrent, I'd stay away from it. It's not as legal as you seem to think.

I'm always a little wary of curser and icon "theme" packs as there's no telling what additional files are included. I would also like it if there were screenshots rather than a simple download link. Ah well, to each their own. EDIT:Edited to be less discriminatory.

Ok. First, I've never heard of this movie called "Nothing", and everything I've found on it is inconclusive. You've piqued my interest (I thought I would have seen something about this on the entertainment shows, but I guess it slipped through). Second, I hope you were kidding about the "All one hundred percent legal, too!" part . Third, I think you best bet would be to explain what you are doing (or what you want to do) to your mother. Frankly the trouble you'll (and you will at some point alas) get into for hiding it isn't worth it my friend. (i'm still trying to wrap my mind around the concept of having, or wanting for that matter, to hide any sort of Rebellion or RebEd files)

My first day of college begins tomorrow...!
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to a topic in Outside Interests
The University books store might have some good deals when you get there. I know that I was able to get used books that other students had sold back to the books store my first year. Amazon usually has good deals, just make sure the text you buy is the same edition as your prof. is using. There's nothing worse than getting to class only to find you're missing a chapter from your edition. Best of luck JI, the first year is always interesting. -
Star Wars: The Waking Foe
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Stellar_Magic's topic in General Discussion
Well VotF can be thrown to the wind because we know that it was a clone. As for Survivor's Quest, I don't think they were anything substantial. If Thrawn were to come back, I don't see him fighting for the Chiss. Thrawn was Imperial through-and-through. He'd probably have a secret empire of his own in the Unknown Regions which he would use to join with the Remnant and begin a new offensive against... well, every one. That, and I'm pretty sure the Chiss wouldn't take him back. -

If you're going to write a book that needs to be adapted for books that are already published, you might want to do two things: first off, wait until Dark Nest II is published, that way you don't need to make further concessions. Secondly, if you want your book published you should contact LucasBooks. If they know the basic premise of your novel they will force other authors to hold on what they are writing to keep some sort of continuity. I have one question: how is it that Thrawn in back? -
Dark Nest I: The Joiner King
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to BadSamaritan's topic in General Discussion
Well, I haven't finished this book yet, but I have to agree with SM. The Chiss are by far my favorite species in the Star Wars Galaxy, and this novel does not do them any justice. The Chiss are, well, unique. They are not cold blooded, just very calculating. They follow a strict set of moral guidelines and laws. Based on these laws they decide what action to take. When dealing with outsiders they are polite, but a little blunt and very forward. They come off as cold, but they're just to-the-point. If you really consider it the Chiss are the most well-documented alien species in the Galaxy. No other species has been described in such detail, no other has had its culture laid out so clearly. Sure, there are still many things we do not know, but what we do know is quite informative. Any mistakes relating to the Chiss are inexcusable. -
Are you certain about that? I'm pretty sure I've used Vader to train other Jedi up to the rank of Jedi Knight.

Ok, I'm really happy I reset my account. My army is only 599 strong (172 attackers, 252 defenders, 175 untrained, 8 spies and 397 sentries), but so far I've been able to fend off armies with thousands of troops. At the moment my strike is only 244,395 but my defense if over 5 million. Each day I can make about 1.8 million on my own, so although it's a slow process my defensive strategy is goind well. Once I am over 10 million defence I will begin to build a larger strike force.

Newbie question from a not so newbie
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to adthrawn's topic in Warlords (Homeworld 2)
I can get a GeForce 6600 GT OC (BFG) for $156 CAD from Future Shop so you should be able to find one for cheaper if you're in the US. You should really only aim for a card that will allow you to play the game how you want it (shadows etc.). If you aim high you'll just be dissapointed. Even with my new GPU and processor I get lag... -
Star Wars: The Waking Foe
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Stellar_Magic's topic in General Discussion
The galaxy is populated primarily by humanoid races, this is true, but the differences are very clear between each (well, with the exception of Dar Maul's race, which was very unoriginal). The difference between the Rapora and the Ssi-Ruuvi are really non existant. As the image I linked to was one person's view, it can be stated that the only difference is that the Rapora don't have toungs comming out of their noses. There just isn't enough difference between the two. As for your explaination of the origins of the Rapora, it simply doesn't work with what we do know of the Rakata. The Rakata enslaved other species. The Rapora could have been slaves and used as cannon fodder (ala the slaves used by the Vong), but they wouldn't have been a "wing" of their army. If they were only slaves they wouldn't have had any technology to loose. Also, the fall of the Infinite Empire was due to a long-lasting civil war and a plague, not a slave uprising. The collapse of the Empire resulted in the freedom of the slaves. So, the Rapora would have been slaves given freedom by the death of their "masters". Their evolution into the race you present seems unlikely for a species that occupies only one system. They would more likely have developed more along the lines of the Noghri. Now, I'm not saying your story isn't a good idea, far from it (artistic expression should never be discouraged), but I do think that you should make changes to the backstory to make it somewhat more plausible. -
Star Wars: The Waking Foe
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to Stellar_Magic's topic in General Discussion
Well, I think its good reading, but I do have one problem. There is something in there that doesn't feel like Star Wars. I don't know, there's X-Wings and Jaina and whatnot, but it just feels like some generic sci-fi story. I know, it's only a snippet, but in any of the previews for the novels you knew it was Star Wars even if there weren't any of the cliche star fighters or phrases. maybe it will become more clear later? Not to be too critical, but for an opening scene, this is rather bland. When you're establishing a new plot line, something not covered in another book, you want an opening that grabs the reader's attention and sets up the story. This doesn't really advance a plot, just treads water. Also, if the foe is (are) who Mad hinted at, I think this will have to stay as fan fic. No offense, but no one really wants another extra-galactic alien species trying to take over. We've just had fifteen (or more) books covering that and the idea is wearing rather thin. If you plan on having the threat come from within the galaxy, there is still one minor problem. Your alien race is very similar (indeed, almost exactly like) this species with some minor aesthetic changes and the addition of a lightsaber. While your plot may be of the utmost originality, your characters are a little too replicated, in my opinion. I'm not trying to be cruel, so please take no offence, but I though this really needed to be said. -
Fall of the Empire, an inspiration for a Battlefield 2 mod
Grand_Admiral_Thrawn replied to a topic in General Discussion
So basically you want to turn BF2 into what Battlefront and it's sequal should have been (or should be in the case of the sequal). I think this is a fantastic idea. You want to make a Star Wars mod, but you also want to avoid cliches. I'd like to help, but I have no modding skills. I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can though. -
Grats Trej. Here's to 5000 more!

I think the true reliability of the TI Fighter can be seen in ANH. In the final battle we see Rebel fighters being destroyed quite frequently to the point where we only have one (plus Wedge) left. I'd say that's pretty darn good. Of course the TIEs had the advantage of turrets on the Death Star, but those are really designed for larger ships. We can also assume that, because the Rebels weren't immediately overwhelmed, there were still some TIEs held in reserve on the Death Star that didn't need to be used while the Rebels threw everything they had at the Imperials and lost it all.
