Hex is short for hexadecimal, essentially machine code. You can't download it anywhere; what you're talking about is the .exe file itself. The moral of this story is: if you have to ask about hex, you're probably not ready to have it. Also, always practice safe hex. Trust me, not something you want to get involved with. There are a lot of hexual predators out there. In some countries, small children are sold as slaves to be used for hex with tourists. Okay, I'm done. ;D But seriously, don't mess with it. It's not worth the trouble of whatever it is you're trying to accomplish.

The first part is easy. You need an MTD Editor. There should be one floating around here somewhere. What you do is you load up the MTCOMMANDBAR file, and then it'll ask for the .tga file. All you do is insert the new button, save it, and you're done. -
I've been messing around with this thing all night trying to figure it out. Anyone know how the LoW team got the Dark Side Adepts to work? It's available on the LoW site, so if someone could take a look and tell me if I'm missing something, that'd be great.

When in doubt, check your hardpoints. That's the one thing that's screwed me up tons.

Here's what you do to find problems and diagnose problems in the XMLs. Open the offending file with Forces of Corruption. It'll tell you which problem is causing the crash first. If you haven't already, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=72d6aa49-787d-4118-ba5f-4f30fe913628&displaylang=en And download the XML Notepad. Install it. Open the offending file in XML Notepad. Fix the error. DONE

Re: Thoughts on game-breaking capital ships

Okay, so I've added the MC90, Gauntlet-Class Star Destroyers, and K-Wings. All is well, except when I bring the K-Wings in, it splits them into two squads of 6 instead of one squad of 12. Anyone know why? -
From the Wookiepedia article on Endor: "The Rebels took the Emperor's bait and the trap was sprung as the commandos were captured at the moon's base and the Rebel fleet was trapped by the Imperial Navy, which was ordered to hold position and prevent the Rebels from escaping. To make things worse, the Death Star's superlaser was already fully operational and was re-designed to be an irresistible anti-ship weapon, destroying Rebel ships at will. General Lando Calrissian and Admiral Ackbar closed with the enemy fleet to buy time, but the situation was hopeless. The Rebellion never knew that the station had the capacity to fire its main weapon system at all, let alone with as great frequency and accuracy as it did. The point blank range tactic planned by the rebel command was an act of desperation, but it also reduced the Death Star's firing rate by mixing up with the Imperial Fleet enhancing the risk of friendly fire by the Death Star. Despite their hard attack, the rebels came under limited fire from the Imperial Fleet, as Fleet Admiral Piett was under direct orders from the Emperor to not engage the Rebels. Still outgunned though, many Rebel frigates, and corvettes were lost in the engagement, and Imperial TIE fighter wings decimated the Rebel fighter force." "It has been theorized (by none other than Grand Admiral Thrawn) that with the death of Emperor Palpatine, the subtle influence he exercised on his troops through the Force (battle meditation) was removed and the Imperial Navy's fighting ability was dramatically reduced, allowing the Rebel fleet to scatter them; it is known, however, that Grand Admiral Nial Declann perished with Palpatine aboard the Death Star, and that he had been using the rare Force-skill of Battle Meditation to aid the Imperial Fleet." Bingo. They closed to point blank range out of desperation, hammered Executor, and after that it was game over.

Nevermind. The Nimitz class ships are almost 1100 feet long. Or, roughly a quarter mile. Regardless, they're the largest oceangoing warships in history. And who built them? Only the most technologically advanced world power in history. My point being, destroyers may be able to accomplish much of the same things as a battleship, but when you truly want to project power, you bring the battleship. -

It's referenced in the books, so it's canon. But, again, from a strategic standpoint, the larger a government is, the more impressive it's warships are. Look at the United States. We have the Nimitz-class supercarriers. These things are a mile long and can project power over most of the Earth's surface. 99% of Earth's population is within striking distance of a US Navy Battle Group. No other navy in the world has anything comparable. Why? Because the biggest governments always have the biggest ships. The same is true in the GFFA (Galaxy Far Far Away). When you have the resources, the trend isn't to build billions of of corvettes; it's to build a battleship. When you've already got battleships coming out of your ears, you build supercarriers. And when you've got tons of those, you build new larger ships capable of silencing any opponent. You might only have three or four, but it's basically the easiest way to keep the peace. Fear of force, rather than the use of force itself. -

Actually, B-Wings and Y-Wings were only part of it. The Rebellion forces at Endor concentrated all firepower on the Executor at point blank range, overloading it's shield generators. After that, the bombers came in for their bombing runs, and a stray turbolaser blast hit Avrl Crynyd's A-Wing, which sent him careening through the forward superstructure. Being so close to the Death Star, Executor was pulled in by the gravity of the battlemoon. -
There's also a lot of hypothesis made that the Emperor was using Battle Meditation and was helping his forces win. After he died, the Imperial forces lost that and fell into disarray. Also, statistically speaking, with that many Imperial ships over Endor it's relatively likely that even with super advanced targeting computers, the Imperials still stood a better chance of hitting eachother than the Rebels.
-
Umm, that's about a billion times better than what I'm doing. How did you guys do that? I'd love to see the code for it.

Well, given the fact that an SSD pops up every time a writer runs out of ideas, it kind of makes sense. The reasoning is that you are only as powerful as your biggest gun. The Empire has SSDs. The Yuuzhan Vong had their superships. The New Republic needed something comparable. -
The Rebels were outnumbered four to one. The only reason they stood a chance is because they closed to point blank range and went after Executor. The Empire couldn't fire without hitting their own ships.
-
The SSDs weren't half a Death Star expensive. Remember that Executor plunged into the Death Star II and nothing happened. SSDs aren't game breaking. They're beatable with standard Rebel fleets. B-Wings and Y-Wings are great at taking them out.

Now, I'm all for creativity. And I love a good story. And I too played with legos. BUT READING THAT MADE MY SOUL BLEED. Not only is there nothing in the Star Wars universe even close to that, I can't imagine a writer coming up with something like that. Looks at the mods that are getting lots of attention. Legacy of War, Dark Empire, Imperial Assault, etc. They're getting attention because they're promising what essentially amounts to an interactive cinematic experience for stories that, until now, have existed only in books and comics. This is one of the major problems in the community. I'm all for creativity, but but everything I do has some sort of basis in canon. I can go to Wookiepedia or pull a book off my bookshelf and go "Hey! Look! Right here!" Every time I download another mod, someone is using that Titan model. THERE WAS NO TITAN. ANYWHERE. IN ANY BOOK. My apologies if this comes off a bit harsh. But this thread has drifted far off topic. Like, Tom Hanks in Cast Away far. The purpose of this thread was to discuss potential balancing issues of including game-breaking capital ships such as the MC90, Executor, Mediator, Allegiance, Viscount, etc in the game. Not "Let's all make up our own crazy ships then ask people to model them.". -
If there's a modeller and skinner out there that wants a challenge, I've got one for ya. The Mon Calamari Viscount-Class Star Defender. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Viscount-class_Star_Defender A Mon Cal Cruiser the size of an SSD. IF someone could do this, it would be of great benefit to myself, and others in the community.

I'm thinking I might make the starfighters totally unbuildable, and instead use space stations, capital ships, and the starfighter carriers to do it instead. However, I do have a good amount of space on the bottom bar right now, so that's something. -

I agree with Major, but we kind of drifted off topic What I was talking about was the addition of HUGE capital ships like the Allegiance, MC90, Strident, Viscount, and Executor. The kind of ships where you get one in a fleet and that's all she wrote. -
I'm not interested in making brand new planets from scratch. All I need is to grab planets from around the galaxy and put them in different places. Here's what I want to add: Sluis Van Gyndine Bilbringi Bastion Yaga Minor Either a tutorial, some way to find the coordinates, or just someone to do them for me would be fantastic.

Does anyone know if I have to edit the model to add a bump map if one didn't already exist? Moreover, how does one make a bump map? These would be helpful to know.
