It must be a different value for different types of items. Detection could be important for fighters, but it seems detection isn't very important for troops (otherwise you'd only see Sulustan troops). This isn't the case, as you see tons of Wookies at end-game. Could be attack value for troops...but that makes you wonder what cap ships use. Hmmm...

~~Untimely raises his hand~~ That would be me. I'm an XP user, and I've not had any troubles with Resource Hacker. Sometimes I think I should go find an old Win95 machine, dust it off, and use it for Rebellion! Nobody ever had any problems running anything on Win95...

It's not according to the research order, because the AI builds scads of Bulk Transports all through the game. My guess is it's hardcoded into the game to build --% Heavy Cap Ships, --% Transports, and --% Starfighters. Then it keeps up with how many of each it has built and builds what is lacking when it has the resources. This is entirely a theory, I've never seen anything on this...but it would explain why there are so few Heavy Cap Ships built and so many of those crappy transports!

Yes, that's what I've seen. You get some information on enemy systems, sometimes but mostly the missions fail. You can always tell who is a traitor, just look for the characters who fail at research missions.
