Think about this, if the Empire is expected to build a Death Star (by virtue of it being in the build list), shouldn't the game allow for this? Meaning, that the game is probably designed in such a way as to allow the Empire to have the resources to eventually build the Death Star. This would lead me to believe that the Empire will be naturally disposed to be able to build much large fleets in the same amount of time as the Rebels to build small to medium fleets if the Empire uses the resources for this instead of building the Death Star. How do the Rebels combat this? And on the other hand, if the Rebels are supposed to be able to build up the same size fleets in the same amount of time as the Empire even when the Empire does not build the Death Star, when would the Empire even want (or be able) to build a Death Star? Something tells me that the Death Star is going to be a useless item in this game.

Fighters, how they dogfight
Teradyn_pff replied to Grand AdlGen frank's topic in EAW General Discussion
Guys, I can't see how this statement means anything other than the Ties and Bombers are produced from the Star Destroyer itself. In galactic mode or in battle is the main question now. This is a suprising turn.... -
It also depends on what aspect he is referring to. In the space battles, I dont think that there will be a problem like that since the ships can float above and below each other to fight. On the ground is a different story, and is the main question you are asking I think. Either it is like you fear and only the "group anchor" units will move in range and all others fire if they lucky to be in range, or it is a mash where every units pushes and shoves each other to get in range, spliting, messingup, spreading out, or otherwise messing up your nice formation. Either one of these will cause problems and it will be interesting to see the subtle ways in which the unit movement and engagement AI will handle things.

Shield Generators or Sensor Domes, Mystery solved.
Teradyn_pff replied to Stellar_Magic's topic in EAW General Discussion
Speaking of which, how would someone get ahold of all of the starwars media that has been published? Comics, original (non whored out-meaning not screen adapted) books, etc.? -
I'm curious as well. Last week it was said that we'd have them in a week and the week is almost up. However they may have been delayed as Petro is very very busy. Right, but as busy as they are, it will be a waste of their time as well as ours if we ask questions in the chat that have already been answered in the list.

I am pretty sure that, with the way he said it, you will click on the Star Destroyer and an interface will let you pick what fighter/bomber group you want to produce. Whether you can do this in the middle of a battle or if this is how you fill the Star Destroyer's capacity (think protoss carriers in Starcraft) in the galactic mode, is still unanswered. -
Also, it is the handle for one of the designers of Petroglyph who has been posting on these forums recently.

I've trouble seeing that as a bad thing.. As do I. If the jedi were so powerful, how did a fallen jedi and a sith lord wipe them almost all out? The Empire is the only true power. We seek only to restore order and balance to the galaxy. Do not be fooled by the idealistic views of the Rebel Alliance. They will be crushed underfoot as well as any who seeks to sow the seeds of insurrection and chaos.

Um, I think he meant that the Interdictor is on the list to be in the game. Not sure what you are saying here.

How to take out Mon Cal Cruisers and Loads of Rebel Fighters
Teradyn_pff replied to Foshjedi2004's topic in Slag Heap
The point of this though is the fact that if you apply (numbers made up for example purpose) 100 hp damage to a 50 hp tie fighter, that is 50 hp wasted that could have been used to take out vital hard points on an ISD. Multiply that by 100 tie, that is a 5000 hp loss and when you have cap ships fighting, that could be the deciding factor in a space battle. -
How is your keyboard by the way? Not to mention your face?

Shield Generators or Sensor Domes, Mystery solved.
Teradyn_pff replied to Stellar_Magic's topic in EAW General Discussion
Actually, wasn't that on the prototype of a superweapon? Leia? (damn, forgot how to spell her name!!!) was able to set the weapon to target itself, or the building platform, (I dont remember). So after their airlock trick failed, they tried to fire on vaders ship as he persued Luke and company and blew themselves up? -
I think the real meat of the question he was asking was more along the lines of how the droids complete a mission successfully. Kind of like, if you move them into a system do they see all that is in orbit, or do automatically go to the ground level and let you know what is on the ground, do they do both, or a combination of some sort? The other side of this is, how do the rebels counter the droids? Or detect them for that matter.

I think you mean, where are the answers to our questions? Are they going to be here before the online chat as we hoped? Delphi, could you find out please? It will really help streamline the chat on friday.

Teradyn_pff replied to Grand AdlGen frank's topic in EAW General Discussion
WOAH!!!!!!!!! HOLD THE PHONE! Please expound upon that Delphi. Will they be producing these during battle? And if so, are you talking about Skirmish mode, 1vs1 Galactic mode, Single Player or all three? And does this mean that other captial ships of that class, ie Mon Cal, can do the same (But with some cost maybe)? -
They have to be stationed somewhere, but I wonder. Since we have seen X-Wings in a ground battle screenshot, would you be able to field every x-wing you have available in the battle? Or is there a set amount that you can station on the ground? I am curious about this scenario: you are the rebels and you have an Imperial force come into the sector. You have only 2 groups of X-Wings to defend with. Can you retreat them to the planet? Or do you have to fight it out with them or retreat them to another system? And on the other side, if your fighters can keep the enemy X-wings busy, can you sneak your transports close enough to the planet to start the ground attack before the space battle is resolved? The flow and eb of the space-to-ground transition is a mystery to me still. If you can blockade an enemy planet, this should mean that you can bring reinforcements to the orbiting fleet after the main space battle. If this is the case, why would any space battle have transports anywhere? I would never send in my transports with a main fleet if I could help it. I would send in all my combat ships first, win the space are, then bring my transports afterward.

So why would the Empire want to build a Death Star?
Teradyn_pff replied to Teradyn_pff's topic in The Bar
The original purpose of this thread was to discuss the tactical and strategic merits of sinking a bunch of credits in to the Death Star given what we currently know about how it will be modelled. Any new discussion on this topic, or should this thread be locked? -
Star destroyer landing on planets...
Teradyn_pff replied to Eduardo's topic in EAW General Discussion
The shields on the first Death Star were not able to block the rebel fighters from penetrating them with their ships. Remember the scene at the end of ANH where they mention "passing through the (magnetic?) shield". The properties of this shield and the one around the second Death Star seem to be different because the falcon and its accompanying escorts could not fly into the superstructure before it went down. The shuttle Tyderium? could not land on the moon either without the Executor having the shields lowered for them. As for Hoth, if there was a complete planetary shield that could protect the entire planet like the shield that prevented Tyderium? from even landing, how would the probe droid get on the planet, let alone get close enough to the generator to scan it? It must have been an electromagnetic shield that would not prevent ships passing through it. This brings the issue of why didn't the Empire use bombers and tie fighters up again though. They did in rebel strike but games fall after movies canon-wise always. -
What will immerse you most into the SW universe?
Teradyn_pff replied to Nevets's topic in EAW General Discussion
Heh, yeah. With this forum you got a bunch of rabid Star Wars nerds ready to pounce on anything you say and shread it to microscopic pieces with analyzation. We are desperate for this game to be out and want to know what is coming up. You guys probably know, but in case you didn't, there are a couple of decades of hope built up toward this game. So everything that happens with it and how it fits into canon, etc is amplified many times over what something similar would be. -

Not to mention that the screens and videos were of pre-beta builds so are probably completely invalid altogether. -
What will immerse you most into the SW universe?
Teradyn_pff replied to Nevets's topic in EAW General Discussion
Does that mean that the single player maps will not be available in skirmish mode? Or are there scripted elements that would not fit in the multiplayer modes? -
Any feedback being considered on how EAW can be improved before launch? I am referring to balance issues of course.

Fighters, how they dogfight
Teradyn_pff replied to Grand AdlGen frank's topic in EAW General Discussion
Well, with a regular RTS, the battle is over and you start a new map with a base and a peon/builder unit. In this game the battle is over and you may not have any time before you are being attacked by a force that was big enough to wipe out the fleet you won the space battle with. In this light, I think people are going to have to bring reinforcements right on the heels of a fight or go in with excessive numbers to be sure you have garrison units after the initial fight. So in that case, 25 may be better than 5. Think of it this way. If the enemy builds up 5 ships before he attacks you, but you send a ship at him each time you build one, his second ship will come out before your and his first ship are done fighting because you had to take the time to get there. And with each successive fight it gets worse. So after you both build 5 ships, he may have 2 or 3 left and you have none. The concept of grab and hold takes a whole new meaning with this kind of game. You can almost think of it as each planet being a resource spot on a game of Starcraft. Once you grab that spot, you have to defend it to keep mining it. If you attack a held spot but don't send enough units to protect it while you build your base up, it will be easier for the enemy to take it back. Another point is that if the battles are going to be big enough, 5 fighters will not be what you are dealing with anyway. You will probably have a few groups of 5 fighters linked to a hotkey anyway, so this is something that the internal testers should be figuring out at this phase of production.
