*sigh* I wish I could play with you... blasted midterms, jobs, illnesses, bills... can I have a pause button for real life?
-
The smarter AI is my #1 desire. I only have time to play in spurts, so I never get to play against human opponents. Crippling yourself so the computer has a tiny fraction of a chance of winning isn't fun all the time.
-
That is a much nicer looking ISD than the originals, that's for sure...

Sounds good! Thanks for the option to return to cockpit- that will help with tests. So will the save/load functions. Just a thought connected to the graphics issue; do you plan to make it possible to use models already made for Rebellion? I guess I'm just curious about the tactical battle graphics... can't wait to see it!

I've actually already seen that list, and had tried googling various people (including Doug and Scott). I have only found contact info for one of the employees, Wayne Cline. I found Linkedin but haven't signed up yet. Thanks though!

Dang. That thread brought back memories. So many people we haven't seen in awhile... I'll try and get ahold of Scath. Thanks Tex! Update: One of Scath's emails is no more. The other one seems to have worked.

Yay double post! Here's a new update on my progress: 1) The group I mentioned "didn't have" any contact information for LucasArts Legal guys. The fellow I spoke with had a "great" attitude. 2) The GR guy's friend with LA hasn't gotten in touch with me yet. 3) No response yet on the developer's FB. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to send messages to non-friends... it used to be possible, but I can't find a way to do it anymore. Any ideas? The developer is Wayne Cline. 4) Kaja spoke with his uncle, who in turn revealed that because Rebellion wasn't developed by LA, they won't have the source code on hand still. Woot! That means I may not have to deal with them at all! At this point, if anyone wants to help, try and track down any of the original CoolHand staff. Rebellion's credits list those who worked on the project.

Star Wars Rebellion - x64 Installer (Beta 4)
Master_Xan replied to budious's topic in General Discussion
I know its possible to influence the AI ship building decisions, as I had a build in which the AI built nothing but CC-9600s. They literally had a fleet with fifty of those, but nothing else. A fleet of 50 anythings is pretty big for the AI. But if I recall, I didn't modify the AI value directly in that game, only the stats. Maybe I'll just make the AI value on medium transports astronomical, and see if they build them by the dozen -
It works! For the most part, anyway. I found it amusing that when I clicked the Rebel side, the Imperial opening movie played, but I bet that's just because you haven't put the Rebel movie in yet. From your descriptions, everything works as intended at this point, except one thing. Three of the sectors can be opened, but all three have issues closing. Sometimes when I click the x to close them, they do immediately, while other times I have to move the mouse around the x clicking until they go away. Same is true of the one sector which can switch sides on the screen; sometimes it moves immediately (as intended), while other times it takes a few clicks. I tried a variety of things, but couldn't find a pattern that you could test with and always get the same result. The only pattern I seemed to see was that each time I started a new game, if I clicked on the Sesswenna sector first, it had problems closing. But only that first time. I'm not sure if that information helps you, as it may not behave that way on your computer, but I really couldn't find any patterns. I ran it under Win7 64bit. If you want, I can also do tests on Win 2000 Pro (which is 32bit), but I haven't done so yet. As another thought, with your next build you should add in the ability to return to the main screen. That will help us test things, as we can easily go from a new game to the main screen again without restarting the game. Not a big deal, just a thought.

Star Wars Rebellion - x64 Installer (Beta 4)
Master_Xan replied to budious's topic in General Discussion
Do you know if AI Value also affects which ships are built? I remember tinkering with it, but can't remember the results. -
You have been working on this for awhile; I'm afraid I cannot offer programming or graphical help, but if you want feedback on design ideas I will help. Also, once you reach an alpha build, I can help test for you. I've beta tested five or six commercial games, and helped with the Rebellion Reloaded testing.

Years ago, I wrote a strategy guide for Rebellion. I've been considering going back and updating it, upgrading it, adding on to it, etc. I won't do it unless there is enough interest. If you would read such a document, reply here so I know. The guide would contain basic information, advanced strategies, and information on major mods and modding practices. EDIT: Upon reflection, this probably isn't the right section of the forums for this thread. Perhaps it should be moved to the general section? Evaders?

Can't unpause in space combat????
Master_Xan replied to Johnnyk's question in Questions from Newbies
Nobody answered this one? Are you using XP 64bit? Did you upgrade to service pack 3? I can help you, but I need some more information to go off of. -
I'm surprised no one answered this. SWRE isn't really used. I have a copy still, if you want it. RebEd does almost everything SWRE does, and is easier to use; but SWRE lets you edit the AI value. Let me know if you have questions about SWRE or want a copy.

I've played this game since it came out (I was 12). Its a great game. Good to see we are still getting a few new members.
-
Thanks Tex! Man, how you remembered that tidbit of information is beyond me; that thread was three years old! Anyway, I sent Kaja an email; we'll see if he responds and if he can help out at all. UPDATE: I asked a fellow who works with gamerevolution.com. He knows a few people, but no one who could help in this quest. He suggested trying to contact the legal department. Finding contact information for them has turned into a task in itself; however, I discovered a group which was contacted by them and may still have a means of communicating with LA's legal department. I've asked them for help; we'll wait and see what that turns up. UPDATE 2: My contact with gamerevolution.com has agreed to contact a buddy of his with LA. We'll wait and see. I'm also making progress with the group I mentioned above.

LA executives still have the power to grant a release of that code- even though the company doesn't develop games (since the huge layoffs in 2008). Actually, Rebellion was developed by CoolHand, and was the only game developed by that company that I'm aware of. If I can get in touch with somebody in LucasArts (or even the right person in LucasFilms) they can still release it. I found one of the original developers in the hopes he would know someone still with LA- he worked with them on several other projects besides Rebellion. Unfortunately, all I've found is his facebook, and the guy only checks it every three months... Just to be clear, the goal is to get permission from official sources (there are still LA employees, even after the cuts, and other people within Lucas' empire that can make the decision). I don't want a copy of the code from illicit sources/means. There is also a new LA president, who has been making sweeping changes to the company since coming in last year. We have no idea how he will treat a source code request. He has already re-released a few old games on Steam (the first bit of attention they've seen in awhile), which means he is aware of the old games. But he did not release Rebellion, which improves any chances we have of getting the code. It may be a long shot, but I'm still shooting.
-
So I was thinking... and its probably a crazy idea, really, but... well, Rebellion sure is an old game. Many people have tried to obtain the source code for it over the years. But did anyone actually manage to contact the right folks? See, the average employee wouldn't have the power to make that decision, and I'm thinking we'd have a much better shot of getting it with a little networking. So, if anyone knows anyone, I want to know. I'll call or email people and try to work up the ladder to someone who is actually capable of saying, "Yes, you may have the source code." In particular, I'm looking for ways to contact the following types of people: Current employees of Lucas Arts Former employees of LA Fan clubs or organizations that have connections with LA or LA people, or have members with these connections Anyone else who can put me in contact with LA employees. What I'm hoping is if I find someone who knows someone who knows someone, we can get in touch with the right someone. If they say no, well, that's life. But I'll feel better being told no by someone actually able to say yes than just being told no by the generic dude on the service telephone line. If you have an idea or contact information, PM me or post here. Please don't post other people's contact information; that should be handled more privately than on a public forum.

new tool:Star Wars Rebellion Data Editor (swrde)

Digging up this topic... So wait, you can modify what units the Rebellion starts with? Or just the ones over certain planets? Is this project still alive? -
Star Wars Rebellion - x64 Installer (Beta 4)
Master_Xan replied to budious's topic in General Discussion
I don't think this thread will ever die. Budious, you've created an eternal thread! Woot! I would love to see an automated process that installs this, or installs Reloaded in full. Preferably both. As you've deconstructed RebEd as part of this project, I was wondering... can you add in the 'AI value' variable? SWREditor had it, though I'm not 100% sure what it did. When I tested it years ago, it seemed to be a number the AI used to compute the value of a unit; i.e. higher values meant a ship was more powerful, and an algorithim must have computed the AI value and the costs together to determine when a ship should be built, when to retreat, etc. But as I said, I was never 100% sure that is what the value was. In short, it would be interesting to have that variable explained to me, and/or put into RebEd if possible. To my knowledge, that's the only thing SWREditor had that RebEd didn't. -
I saw this yesterday, and will get it up and working later today. Feedback to come.
-
I would so play you, if only I had the time... If I may suggest, don't put your email like that on a publicly-viewable forum. Crawlers and bots will pick it up, meaning you'll get lots of spam. Try separating it out, like: stonepowers @ yahoo .com Just a suggestion.

Modify the maintenance required to build the ships. Use RebEd to do this. I haven't tested it, but if they require 0 maintenance, they should never be destroyed due to lack of maintenance. Or, you can increase the maintenance provided by mines/refineries, so you always have obscene amounts of it. RebEd will let you do this too. If there is another way, as in removing the game's maintenance destruction feature while maintaining the maintenance required to build something, I don't know how to do it.

Rebellion Reloaded Help, Noob Questions
Master_Xan replied to anhelm's question in Questions from Newbies
Oh snap. That would take awhile to manually load all of that. 'Specially since you'd have to extract the information, THEN load it. K, let me experiment and try a few things. I probably won't be able to test stuff til tomorrow; regardless, I'll let ya know what I figure out. -
Rebellion Reloaded Help, Noob Questions
Master_Xan replied to anhelm's question in Questions from Newbies
First, kudos for not throwing my suggestion to check the instructions out the door just 'cause you'd already done it. If I remember right, when I did the RR install I had it right, but another TC I did I missed a step and only realized it when somebody else pointed out I had misunderstood the instructions. So if I understand correctly, you got the background and support files, but lack the pictures for characters and the voice changes. Oh, and encyclopedia entries are messed up. Was there any other portion of the TC that didn't load up correctly? For instance, did all the ship models, encyclopedia entries, etc. load up correctly?
