I am furious... (Avatar:) The Last Airbender movie
Master_Xan replied to Evaders99's topic in Outside Interests
What did you expect? M. Night Shyamalan is doing the movie. Not exactly my first choice for directing in a fantasy setting. I wonder if he'd even heard of Avatar before getting involved in the project? BTW, I saw a trailer for it when I saw the new GI Joe movie (trailers a year before the movie comes out? o.O ) The trailer looked cool enough, but didn't really show much of anything. Not even his face; I didn't know until now about the casting stuff. This is why I'm glad Orson Scott Card is in control of his movie project; the first director he tried to get for an Ender's Game movie was going to cast all white people, but OSCard fired the director first and tabled the project. If it's going to be done, it should be done right. Looks like the Avatar movie crew don't agree with that philosophy. -
Anybody here ever played Odium? It's a fun little RPG. Little old, but a good one. Unique in some of the things it does. Certainly not a game for a zillion options, but it's simplicity itself is... fun. Game Revolution gave it an A- back when they reviewed it (and it's hard to get an A- from them... I think Starcraft itself didn't get that high), so I tried it out. Good game, I recommend it if you can find it cheap.

Oh my. Um... let's see. It's kind of a long list... KotOR 1 official 1.03 patch No-CD patch Bastila romance fix (so you can talk to her after a key conversation and not ruin it) Bastila robe pack (you remember the cool robe she starts out with? Then you put a jedi robe on and she's back to standard robes... this mod keeps her in a variant of her original cool robes) Bastila on Korriban (she wouldn't go with you originally) Bendak the Bounty hunter (allows a light-side ending to the fight, if you do it properly) Big Bad Sound Mod (see Ultimate sound mod for details) Brotherhood of Shadow: Solomon's Revenge (tons of additional content, very highly rated mod) Hide the Weapon mod (hides character's weapons when they preform actions... like typing on a keyboard) A Proxy skin for HK-47 (I'm not sure I like it yet... but I don't even have him in my party yet, either) Lightsaber choices mod (let's you pick your color of lightsaber irregardless of what 'profession' you go into) Male headpack (cause I like choices) Music Enhancement pack (digitally re-incoded music at like four times the quality) New Bik movie (restored content the developers took out) Republic Uniform reskin (changes that ridiculous orange to a darker shade, MUCH better) Ebon Hawk construction bench (let's you construct items with your ship's bench) Korriban student robes (puts robes on them, so they no longer look like sith officers) A new loading picture (so I don't have to see the Ebon Hawk every time I start the game; now it's a battle scene snapshot from Bastila vs. Reven) Ultimate Sound mod (combined with the big bad sound mod; improves sound effects) Visual Effects mod (removes the "glowing hands" and similar effects when using force powers, etc. Yeah, when did you see their hands glow with force push in the movies?) Walk fix (fixes the gliding that characters will sometimes do with the official 1.03 patch) I looked at a few other mods, but I wanted to keep the same balance in the game, so no super weapons, no higher difficulties, no additional merchants, etc. I'm guessing you were only asking about KotOR, but... here's the mods I'm using on Deus Ex (which I think you all should try if you like FPS/RPG games) Fully updated with official patches No-CD patch High-Def Texture Pack (which includes four different mods for higher-quality graphics in characters, weapon models, weapon effects, environments, etc.) The Nameless Mod (a total conversion-esk mod; completely new story line and modified weaponry, full-voice acting, etc. I'm not using this one yet, not until I finish my current game.) Maybe some more... Deus Ex doesn't have a handy Override folder to go looking in.

I'm playing through Knights of the Old Republic again. Only this time, I've installed a few mods; one of them is supposed to install several hours of additional gameplay. We'll see how I like it. I'm also playing through Deus Ex again. Man, I love that game!

Settlers is awesome. We play it all the time; some of the expansions are pretty good too. Expensive, but good. There are a few "copy-cats" of the game as well; Settlers of Zarahemla is the Mormon knockoff Also, there's a fairly decent online version called Xplorers. You can play it here, and probably at other sites too if you look around.

Lucky. We didn't have cable back in the day, so I never got to see the cartoons. Though I suppose I could probably find them online nowadays... something tells me it just wouldn't be the same. And few things in life are better than ninjas.
-
That's good to hear; I used to play with the action figures back in the day, so I figured I'd go see the movie eventually. I've been worried it would be an idiotic movie, but sounds like they might have pulled it off.
-
Let us know if anything changes. Yeah, I can't skip the droids introduction either; one of these days I'll get around to fixing that... Also, did you do a full install of Rebellion? What version of DirectX are you running? I'm guessing 10, but ya never know. And my last random thought of the moment; how up-to-date are your video drivers?

We do what we can

Yeah, I already knew about lasers and turbo lasers. And I guess I did know ion cannons, just mistook the visual blue glow for them when it was tractor beams. Actually, I've noticed that repeated laser hits from, say, Corellian gunships, can make it easier to take out a capital ship. It makes it hard for the enemy shields to regenerate while your heavy hitters recharge their turbolasers in-between shots, even though the lasers would never take down the shields on their own. And to answer your question, it takes 93 corvettes, though having a few more helps with the occasional problems inherit with such a large fleet action (like sometimes accidentally leaving a ship outside of it's combat range). That's assuming a good admiral for the corvettes, positioned away from the battle on an unarmed transport, no command staff for the SSD, and no fighter support for either side. If Rebellion's engine could re-target faster, it would probably take many, many more... And if you believe that, then I'm a better liar than I thought!

Wing Commander is a bit old nowadays (not that I dislike old games, I mean it's a BUGGER to get working; I've tried at least a half-dozen times but the speech is seemingly impossible to get right). You may enjoy Descent Freespace though.

Hmm... And this happens every time you try and battle, or did you only try it once? I ask because just yesterday, I went into a battle and the blue box which normally surrounds the field didn't show up. I asked myself, "Blue box, wherefore hast thou gone? What didst I ever do against thee, that thou shouldst offer up thyself a fool upon the alter of union strikes?" The next battle, the box was back. Also, you are running the original version of the game, or did you modify it at all? With cards downloaded from the site, or using RebEd, or especially any changes to the ship models? If you haven't tried reinstalling, I'd give it a shot. While I wait for your next response, I'll see if I can figure anything out for ya. Edit: it just occurred to me, do you have anything running in the background? Any reason why Rebellion wouldn't be getting the resources it should to run properly? Perhaps try running the game "as administrator" by right-clicking the .exe and choosing that option. Also, try disabling the various options listed under the volume settings (in the options menu in-game). Disable all of them, then try doing a battle. See if that makes a difference, and let us know the results.

Macbook. Pshaw. Obviously, someone is spending too much time in graphics and not enough time enjoying the fruits of other's graphical endeavors; get a PC and do some gaming! Ra Ra Games! Ra Ra Games!

Real actors for cut scenes: brilliant! That's what drew me in to the C&C Red Alert titles. Kinda like Return to Zork...
-
After some checking, it looks like SWCIC isn't active at the moment. The group is talking about how to get it up and going again, so I assume that means it currently isn't "up and going".
-
Ever try the Wing Commander games? Or Descent? Or Descent Freespace? Good games, all of them.
-
Heh, I have noticed that. Always thought it was the effect of ion cannons, which temporarily shorted out the ships engines. The things you think you know... So how, exactly, do ion cannons differ from turbolasers and lasers then?
-
Hmm... Tofu, what have you been doing, that an ISD would be up agains a Carrack? Alright, cool. Although I haven't noticed much effect if I take it out, so it must not be that powerful of a mechanic.

When I took the ASFAB (a military aptitude test), they decided I'd be well-suited to nuclear physics. I dunno... I tend to be good with math, but I don't always enjoy it. I'm not sure I can handle a career that regularly forces me to use and learn new complicated formulas all the time. Yeah, probably not going to do game design. I am capable of coding, wouldn't say that I'm the best, but I can do it... I just hate it. But at least I can do coding; I can't do graphics. I have the artistic sense of a five year old with a box of crayons. Even if it looks fine to me... I do pretty good with software, just not with creating software. I actually enjoy troubleshooting (most of the time), whether it's another Windows problem or hardware doesn't matter to me. That's why I decided to try comp engineering. Far as game design goes, I'd do just fine on the idea side of things. In fact, I'd love to make plot lines, stories, maybe even dialog, or anything like that for games. But how do you get into those positions, without programming skills to work up from, or being buddies with a software CEO? I'm good with ideas, and organizational-type stuff, which made me think about a business career. Problem is, as good as I am with video game ideas and plot lines, I haven't shown much aptitude with inventions, so entrepreneurial stuff may have to wait until I have a sudden idea. I'm still toying with a degree in business management though...

Can anybody tell me what, exactly, do tractor beams do in Rebellion? I've always sort of assumed they make it easier for a ship to hit fighters... but I got to wondering today if that's actually true, or just my assumption-that's-totally-wrong. For instance, I thought maybe they make it harder for a fleeing ship to, you know, flee. As in, slows 'em down or something. So, who's got the answer?

Heya Neron! Welcome to the site. I'd play you a game sometime, but... well, I don't have the time! In any case, hope you find some good stuff poking around the site. Enjoy!

Alrighty guys, a little advice is in order. What, exactly, should I major in? I've done a year so far for computer science; I am, after all, a techno nerd. But so far, the only thing I hate more than programming code is helping somebody else with their buggy code. I thought I'd enjoy it, seeing as how I do just fine with making my own game mods; well, the modding I do doesn't require C++ or any other full-scale language, so obviously it wasn't an apt comparison. I don't know how Evaders does it; I'd rather be kicked in the shin all day long than have to write any program more complicated than basic calculators. So now what the heck do I do? I'm interested in history, but if I major in that I'm doomed to live on a teacher's salary for the rest of my days. Not that I don't like teaching, but neither do I enjoy it enough to barely get paid a livable income. So far, I'm thinking of switching to computer engineering. How exactly does one get a job troubleshooting hardware and the like? And what jobs fall under the category of "information technology" majors? Or any other ideas?

You should be able to google it and find somebody else who at least got a good screenshot... It was awhile back, but you guys were talking about keyboards. Did you know the qwerty keyboard was designed to slow down typists? Old-school typewriters couldn't keep up with humans, so they designed the keyboard to deliberately slow us down. Ironic, eh? Personally, I'm using an Asus dual-core laptop. A year ago, when I was still on my desktop, I had an Asus motherboard; I'd been using that motherboard for five years, and I got it used from a friend who had it for a year. I figured a six-year old motherboard that was still working just fine (even for games!) was good, so I went with the same company for my lappy. In retrospect, it was a good decision. Way better than gambling with Harry Potter magic (in some circles, they are known as Hewlett Packards, but we all know HP uses the Imperius Curse to control their customers).

I like it Evaders! And Mad, that comic was pretty good too.

They seriously need some better plot in the last few C&C games. And the latest Red Alert game? *shudder*
