Sorry to interrupt your little war games there, but I've got two cents around here somewhere I want to throw into the discussion.

About females in Star Wars: Look at the classical trilogy, pre-special edition. If I count correctly, there are some 7-8 female characters in a total of three movies (not counting odd aliens whose gender is not clear), of which only four have dialogue: Leia, Beru, the Ion Control lady and Mon Mothma. Of these four only two are in a way important: Beru for being Luke's aunt and being partially responsible for his upbringing, and Leia, who is less important as Luke's sister or Vader's daughter or second-to-last hope for the Light Side than as primary love interest for the story.

In the EU (as well as the prequels) more and more women appear. The position of women in society has become stronger since the 70s, and not every female character can be Leia, so stronger women are created. We have female Jedi, female villains, female pilots and smugglers and commandos.

But somehow, it remains important that where there are men and women, romance has to occur. So once again, the women of Star Wars must obey to their biological role and become partners for their male companions. Star Wars now has more relationships than a daily soap, literally every female ever to be created has, at some point, been thrown together with any existing male. This doesn't exactly help them, for instead of being "Insert Name", they are no more than "Insert other name"'s girlfriend.

Now I forgot what I wanted to say when I began writing this post, but at least I've achieved some kind of result. Good night.

In an odd sort of way, that just started to look like making some sense!

I agree. Look at the gender of most of the authors. If I'm not mistaken, most are male, and so thus, the roles of woman are being portrayed by males and their perception of females!

Well, there is one female who didn't have a male attachment:Ysanne Isard. But then again, who would trust that icy woman. She'd turn agains you at the first sign of an advantage.

EDIT:Since Barkoa bosted while I was typing, yes, most of the writers are male, but even the female writers follow the trend of males being dominant. That, and they tend to be poor writers...

True. If the female writers can't stand up for dominant single women, they who can?

Just as in real life, you mean?

Well, not every female get together with a male. Some remane single, some choose another female. It is not, however, that odd. The SW books follow the "nuclear family" model. There aren't any single people.

Mad? Are you making fun of me?

100 eccentric males in this forum! How many of your novels have single main character females?

I'm quite fond of a series of books by author Steven Erikson. They're fantasy books, but not your standard "Longarrow" type (by that I mean, you won't find an elven character [or any elves for that matter. He creates his own races] with the name Longarrow or any others with such fanciful names). There are plenty of characters in those books who are single. A very good series. But this isn't the forum for such talk.:D

I may have missunderstood your question though, Barkoa.

Do we know for sure that all or most of the writers are male? Sometimes women use a male pseudonym, don't they?

Well, if most readers are male, it may well be that they are more reluctant to read a book written by a woman. Edited by Scathane

That's an intersting point. There may be some of the lesser-known writers who are female, and we don't even know it.

I doubt you are but still, it's known to happen this way as well as vice versa...

There are some people who read books from a particular gender simply because they feel that a female/male writer portrays characters that they themselves can relate to. I personally enjoyed the Star Wars novels written by men far more than those written by women. It's all in the way they are worded and presented.

That's not to say I won't read books by women, butto date I've not enjoyed such books to the same degree as those authored by men.

I read a book usually based on recommendation, or the blurb on the back. I'm not gender-concerned, but I have noticed generally that males are better. But that is just general.[/i]

It's more a psychological thing, which we all, more or less, are victim to. We don't make such a choice consciursly but it's there nevertheless. Edited by Scathane
