@All beta testers Just so everyone knows, We just hit a milestone. SOGE 2.0e has been released. We will continue working on our closed beta version, but we now have a full, mostly stable release! on our moddb site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/sins-of-a-galactic-empire
-
@lavo Are there any patches you want me to put into the installer version? Stuff that isn't in the 2.0E version on ModDB?
-
Okay, I'm gonna try to make a standalone installer for SOGE 2.0E so that we can streamline the install... ("run SOGE2.0.exe" rather than "well unzip it then go here then do this then do that then do this then...") with my knowledge of symlinks and stuff in Windows XP+ it should be pretty easy to do... I'm just gonna post here with updates as it goes... if anyone wants a copy, just ask me... I'll see what I can do.
-
Lol... To take EV's go do it yourself attitude... If you really want to, I'm sure you could find yourself a deathstar model and make a planettype... ;P Personally, I side with lavo tho... It would be way cool, but would take a while to do... a while that we don't have... Hey warb, just like to say thanks... I've been a EaW fan for *counts to self* way too long... and your modeling skills are amazing. It's great to have a good modeler on the team.

How does this sound: Since the heavy ion cannon ability does sound a bit... generic "Large ion modulators" or something along those lines -
@Fligsnurt: You've been added to the Beta tester group. Welcome to the beta team. @temujenn and Stiltman Make an account on Mantis and post your mantis username here. That's required to be able to report bugs.

Wow. If only all beta testers actually... tested like this. I'll keep you guys up to date on balance-type stuff... Make sure that while you're messing around you don't screw something else up lol... And Lavo, do you want me to make an in-game icon for the NTB-360? (or whatever it is...) I can try to make one here (no idea how to add it tho... but i can make it... that centax icon bugs the crap outta me) -
Do you have an account on Mantis?

That's actually good to hear... If you want to mess around with that, then go ahead... I'd be interested in the results... As a side note, Rebellion apparently will not be multithreaded... or 64bit friendly... (thanks great oracle of google) So, it looks like our lag problem won't be fixed any time soon -

First off, thanks for the reply... unlike a lot of internet users out there, I actually like to see a wall of text in front of me (it shows me that you actually tried to test the mod rather than just playing it for the lolz) Umm... I think it's to kinda change the way that the game feels... if you're raking in the dough from hundreds of asteroids, rather than running off of a handful, it feels more empire-like The problem with this is if your ships take years to repair, why wouldn't you scuttle it and get a new one? especially for cruisers... Unless there's a way to get repair rates to increase out of combat.. (lavo? Any ideas? is this even possible? I don't think so, but maybe) Until you have an ability that you have to wait 30 minutes to activate... This could work... maybe not 900%, but I could see this working. Maybe, but keep in mind that a crippled AI is a bad AI... if it can't figure out how to colonize those planets (which it can't without excessive work) then it's stuck, and your game is no fun Not a bad idea... I actually like that idea... Unfortunately, not likely... That kind of stuff is really hardcoded... nothing we can change there... Thanks for your thoughts... I like long games too... Fun stuff... Unfortunately, until rebellion comes out (maybe... not even sure about this one) we can't really do much about lag... even if you get a 12 core supercomputer style processor, it still won't help because Sins runs only on a single core... period. Unless the devs make entrenchment multi-threaded (which isn't gonna happen), then we're stuck as is. What're your thoughts lavo? I would be open to tweaking this... Some of your tweaks may be a little excessive, but I'm still happy to hear them. I like that you're playing around with the mod and trying new things out... That's how this has been since I joined... It's good to have you on the team as a tester. -

albeit maybe less lag because it doesn't actually have to draw all the models. Keep in mind that the lag is caused by 2 things, CPU lag (keeping track of all your units, objects, and life in general) and graphics lag (due to high poly models, etc) If you have a (few) high quality graphics card(s) then graphics lag is not an issue. (that's my situation) CPU lag would be caused by having sooooo many units that your CPU (or, technically, the one core of your CPU that sins is running on) can't handle it. This causes a number of problems, namely lag, poor AI responsiveness, and random disappearance of objects (visual effects. Try zooming in on a comet cloud with a giant fleet and watch the lasers, missiles, etc, disappear.) If you have a low end graphics card, then life REALLY sucks. Your CPU has to handle both the visual effects that your card couldn't AND the high-stress job of keeping track of everything (which it probably couldn't do anyways). The only way to guarantee that you will not have lag (especially late-game) in Sins is to get a VERY high end SINGLE CORE processor. As of now, I have no access to that kind of processor, and most people probably don't. This is the reason that Sins is notorious for terrible performance, even in Vanilla. -

This is pretty much my point. Though if you are the Republic... Just build a star base and give it Resupply ability; repairs ALL ships and structures within a grav well. Heh I love resupply! lol yea that works much better than the repair platforms -
Well, by assimilation I meant taking over a planet... Darn, that kinda ruins my plans...
-
Okay... so I was playing around with SOA2 (yeah, I know, ima traitor) and I realized that their Borg assimilation buff has some sort of randomization factor... IE it will sometimes work, but sometimes not... is there a way to implement that in SOGE? I'm thinking have some like supercap or something have an "Invasion" ability, that either deals damage or completely assimilates the planet based on a random factor... probably more likely to be damage, not assimilation lol... I'm thinking have the DCS be able to do that... 1st off it would allow it to do some planet damage (flavorfully), and if you're lucky, you could take the whole thing over... EDIT: Considering how powerful that could be, maybe make it like a 2 minute ability or something? That could really only be used if you have the enemy space fleet routed... Ideas? Flames? Jawas?

Ya SOA has the shipyards do repairs just like the repair platforms... but realistically speaking, if your shipyard is constructing a ship, there should be no way to also do repairs on a ship... its resources are eaten up by the new ship... -
Also, to add on there, the last full release of the mod was '09. The beta's been constantly updated since then... Yeah me, Lavo, NovaCameron (although he's not actually active now), along with our great webmaster Evaders are the majority of guys working on the mod... although we're still using/converting/keeping the majority of Eville's models. Without him, this mod would, quite literally, be nowhere BTW EV, can I add people to the beta tester group? If so how? never mind. you learn something new every day!
-
Yeah, their newer updates are screwed... ever since like a month ago when their servers got stuck... it seems like it depends on which internal server I talk to... idk... File/Gamefront is totally borked alphabluemodding.com An Empire at War modding site/forum, has a ton of free-release downloads (on par with EAWFiles, and more reliable)... unfortunately you have to be a member to dl stuff tho

Well, not necessarily a bug... more of an oversight... the Sins devs never envisioned an ability having both a points and research requirement. As such, they never programmed a way for it to check research reqs into ability management -

Oh, the RAM dump. The devs are working on a work around for that; sadly 2GB is the limit no matter what due to it being a 32-bit engine. Well, you can make the engine 64-bit friendly... I hope they do that this time... stupid 2G limit is sooo annoying -
If you can't get it, I can grab that one too... should be on Alpha Blue

Memory MD... When the mem usage gets over 2G... it's a CIV IV error too... and it throws a Memory Allocation Failure (MAF)... confusing my games here... -

Don't they have "hero" ships in Sins Rebellion? Or am I confused? I know they're doing a lot of changes to gameplay (hopefully fixing the MAF error and stuff too... ugh) -
Yep no problem... Still used to FF here too... they're just falling too... ads all over the place and nothing is reliable any more... *in old man voice* "back in my day, it was still filefront and it was reliable as anything"
-
Meh to each his own, but if it does take significant work to put it in than I agree...
