Ah yes, the reading order. Wasn't an issue for me, since most of the books weren't out yet when I first started reading the series. If your missus isn't into sci fi and still liked the books, then maybe there is hope for my missus...

I'm not huge into MMOs, but I too look forward to Battlefront 3. I'm really hoping they improve the space battles.

You installed the VMware tools? And allocated at least 2 GBs of RAM for the VM? And don't have anything on the host eating up all your CPU power?

How much would you pay to buy SWRebellion on GOG.COM?
Master_Xan replied to addict-ant's topic in General Discussion
It is clunky, but doesn't bother me too much. Now if the multiplayer was better, I would play it a lot more; the slow/medium/fast time mechanic just doesn't translate well to multiplayer games very well. -
Ah. That makes more sense. That is really strange behavior from VMware. I wonder if it really makes that much difference that you are using XP. It shouldn't, but maybe it does. You can always find a cheap copy of 2000 or 98 to try on; check your local craigs list, or ask around. Might be worth $5 to play through without all that hassle transferring back and forth. Or, wait and hope that GOG.com puts out Rebellion in a format modern OSs can play.

Rebellion Refreshed and Reloaded Ultimate Package (x86/x64)

Snarfy, you can also try a few things. If the CD is scratched, try ripping a copy, mounting it, and perhaps the game will recognize that. Conversely, try disabling any mounting software you have running (Daemon tools, or Alcohol, or whatever). Occasionally those interfere with CD DRM checks. -

I voted 5-10, but if they had the right kind of extras, I would pay more. GOG usually gets it to install and work properly on modern OSs; that alone is worth the money, but if they packaged it with a digital copy of the manual (which I lost a decade ago), or included some other goody, I would pay more. -
Really? Doesn't take me nearly so long to configure a VM. Setting it up should only take a few minutes, then you pop the OS disc in and go do something else while it takes forever to install. Let us know how it works with Virtual PC. I'm always curious about what works and what doesn't.

I know you can tell the droids to build specific things for you on a specific planet. But you are right, being able to reserve a planet would be nice. You can always do it the old fashioned way. Get a single construction yard to build a gazillion refineries on the planet you want reserved, then pause construction. Without any available energy, the droids will leave the planet alone. Then redo the build orders when you want space for another construction yard to build something useful. Clunky, but it works.

Virtual machine. You have a computer (hardware), and on that computer you install an operating system (OS). In your case, Windows 7 x64. You can then create a virtual environment, and in that environment you install another operating system- in this case, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or some older version of Windows. Then you install the game into the virtual operating system. Like a box inside of a box. Rebellion works best in an old box, so you put the old box inside of your nice, big, new box. Then you put Rebellion inside the old box. This old box is a virtual machine. It is great for security- anything in the old box stays there, and cannot get out and into the bigger box. But it also works for old games designed for an OS you no longer use regularly. There are several different programs you can use to accomplish all of this. VirtualBox and VMware Player are the two most popular free programs. I recommend VMware Player. To set this all up, install one of those two programs. Then use it to create a VM. When you do, it will ask what OS you are going to put on it. Dust off an old copy of Windows you haven't used in awhile, pop in the CD and install it on the newly-created VM. Then you can install Rebellion on the VM, using the old version of Windows. It sounds pretty complicated until you do it once, then it isn't so bad. There are dozens of step-by-step tutorials floating around; pick a program, look up a tutorial, and you should do fine. Unless you don't have an old version of Windows sitting around. Then you have to go buy one, but they are cheap on Ebay or other places. A word of caution: because you are using an old version of Windows in the VM, do not log in to online banking or other web services from the VM. The older versions of Windows are susceptible to hackers and viruses. If you lose the VM to a hacker, you just wipe it clean and start over (aka replace the old box with an identical old box), perhaps losing your saved game or something. But if you do online banking from the VM, and they hack your bank account... you see the problem. Because nothing in the VM, not even a hacker, can get out of the VM and into your normal Windows 7, anything there is just as safe, regardless of whether you have a VM or not. Hopefully that all makes sense. I assume something doesn't; feel free to ask questions, and I will answer.

Yeah, some people got it working, but I never did. If you can't get it going, just install a VM with an old version of Windows.

You are both correct. If you tell the droid to control manufacturing for you, you can use the reserve to keep a facility out of their hands. That is one of Rebellion's best features, but rarely used, since few of us ever give our war manufacturing over to a droid. They just aren't smart enough. However, it can be nice if you are just learning to play the game.

Check the last page or two of posts here. There is a new link for the Rebellion Refreshed package. If you are talking about a different link, let us know exactly which link is dead.

Looks like you tried asking on VirtualBox's forums. Not much help over there, were they. VirtualBox doesn't handle 3D graphics very well at all. There are a few dozen different work arounds, none of which helped me get my copy of Star Trek: Fallen working, nor Star Trek: Dominion Wars, nor Croc, nor other games from that general era. Before trying anything else, I would verify that your copy of DirectX is the correct version for the game. Easiest to just install DirectX straight from the Rebellion CD. If you already did that, skip to the next thing. You can try turning off extra settings for the tactical battles. If the game crashes right as you get into the battle, you may not have a chance to do that; I can't remember offhand if the tactical battle settings are accessible from the main settings menu or not. If they aren't, I'm not sure how to change the settings outside of the game; you can try looking for a settings file, or open files with Notepad++. Just make sure you open copies of the files, as some file formats can be corrupted by a program interpreting them incorrectly. Np++ should be smarter than that, but better safe than sorry. If that doesn't work, or you want an easier solution, install a different version of Windows and try it there. VirtualBox with Windows 2000 Pro ran Rebellion just fine for me, no hiccups. I imagine you could try Windows 98 or even 95 and see if it works. The interactions between your physical hardware, your real drivers, VirtualBox, and the virtual OS, with its virtual drivers supplied by VirtualBox, changes when you alter any of the components. Another OS might work for you, if you have the old copies around. Or you can try it in VMware Player, or some other VM software. I've found that VMware handles 3D graphics a little bit better than VirtualBox. I said a little bit- there are still problems, but after tinkering I was able to get my other games working in VMware, even though they didn't work in VirtualBox. Again, if VMware and XP don't run Rebellion, I can vouch for it working correctly in Win 2000 Pro, and it may work in 98 or 95. I wouldn't try ME except as a last resort- that OS is cursed.

Rebellion Refreshed and Reloaded Ultimate Package (x86/x64)
Master_Xan replied to budious's topic in Rebellion Reloaded
Perhaps someone can help. For me, I gave up on it. Easier to just install a VM with an old operating system, like WinXP. Then you can use Reloaded without concern for x64 problems. That is my suggestion, anyway. Especially if you are trying to install in Windows 8 (which came out after these installers were designed, and may not work no matter what you do). -
Star Wars Rebellion - x64 Installer (Beta 4)

Its the season for me, too. Just re-installed TIE Fighter. If the Rakata play into it, I will definitely read it. Their story always interested me. You know, the four or so times they are mentioned in video games and such. I think they must be mentioned in some of the Old Republic novels or something, but I haven't read too many of those. Its on my to-do list. Thank you for doing that, mate. -

True. And I'm just fine not seeing that. Instantaneous communication though; that could be lost and keep the civilization quite large. I haven't heard of Dawn of the Jedi. Sounds interesting; I'll look into it. -

I don't have a problem with Cade. Just the plot holes that don't explain anything in the universe in which he lives. Similar to my problem with technology in the Old Republic era games and books; lightsabers haven't changed in how many thousands of years? In the KotOR games, you can get personal shield generators and personal cloaking devices. Why don't those exist thousands of years later, or are only used as gameplay mechanics in the games? Why are the ships essentially the same? Fortunately, the gameplay is good enough that I just pretend the other holes aren't there, but I struggle to do that with books. (You are right, though; the first KotOR storyline was great.) I agree, the Force not affecting extra-galactic species doesn't make much sense from how we thought it worked. Still not sure how I feel about it, but it did make for interesting encounters. And Salvatore is awesome. For setting... I'd like to see a time before. As in, before the Old Republic. Before any galaxy-spanning republic. Star Wars has lightsabers, but Star Wars is not lightsabers. Star Wars is the Force. Why not show a time with projectile weapons, swords, and different ship technology? Where Force-users trained in different techniques, and where traveling from planet to planet actually takes time? Where information cannot be sent instantaneously across the galaxy? Show the founding of a Force-sensitive group that blurs Sith teachings of strength with Jedi teachings of harmony. Or jump ahead. Show us a group sent back to the Vong home galaxy. Show us transporters, nanotech, armor that actually works, invisible lightsaber blades, or play off the light-whip idea. Show us something NEW. Sorry about my frustration. Its the Star Wars nerd inside of me violently clashing with the author inside of me. -

I actually liked the Vong series. It really shook up the universe. Major characters dying, major shifts in power, alliances changing; you know, interesting things. Not many of those novels ended like a TV episode (where stuff happens but in the end, nothing changes). After the Vong series though... I feel like they are really struggling to provide antagonists. There just aren't any bad guys anymore. Clones? Been there, done that. In all possible permutations. Extra-galactic race of warlike aliens? Check. Clone armies? Yep. Instant Sith armies, using any number of mystical forces to turn non-Sith into force users? Already done. Crazy warlord splinter groups? Done. The Empire? They joined the Republic. Mysterious Sith, returning from exile? Mysterious machine capable of creating entire war fleets? Mandalorians? What's left to do? Uh... let's have a good guy turn into a bad guy! Lame. That's probably why they jumped ahead a few hundred years, pretended that everything went to pot for no apparent reason, got rid of the Jedi (without much explanation), and gave us Cade Skywalker. I hate plot holes. -
Where do I initially download the game?
Master_Xan replied to jbc98k's question in Questions from Newbies
Well, someday, probably a decade or more from now, when I'm teaching my kids how to play Rebellion, I will give them the guide. I may even let them see the strategy guide I wrote. After I mercilessly crush them a time or two. Or three. -

Holy guacamole Batman, three people looking for this file in two days? This isn't going to work. Can someone upload this thing to mediafire or something? Or better yet, hey Evaders. Want to put this up in the downloads somewhere? -

I lost the original manual. Well... I think my mother threw it out when I was a teenager. But I have no proof of that, so... yeah. Are you saying the Prima guide has no useful information about game mechanics? By useful, I mean not discernible by observation or RebEd. Cause if so, then I just wasted $4. Aw well. -

I hope GOG will make it available. For now, I see some copies on Amazon. Remember you can also look for Star Wars: Supremacy. Its the same game (just renamed in Europe). There are also several copies on Ebay. I just found the Prima strategy guide- didn't even know there was a Prima guide for Rebellion! I wonder if it explains any of the mechanics I've been guessing over for years...
