Thus you got it for "free".

Just the DVD copy only? Heck that's free. Want the box plus big paper manual and the DVD? That is a bit hard to find cheap. Since it cannot be pirated. Hmmm...give the customer alot of goodies inside the big box like they used to decades ago and a nice big manual...and maybe that would help stop piracy. 'Tis a brilliant idea! I think you may have to watch ebay for a time. Once in a while someone sells off an original full boxed copy off an estate not knowing what it is worth. "$44.95 + $3.99shipping Used - Very Good Seller: ceforman2 Rating:(103 ratings) 100% positive over the past 12 months. In Stock. Ships from IL, United States. Expedited shipping available. Domestic shipping rates and return policy. In full-size retail box (purple, not red). " Ask them if it is the real deal (full box and manual), better hurry...they do sell for over 100 dollars..purple box? I guess is that a latter day re-print? then it will not have the big manual maybe..so ask the question very well. Mine is in RED?? color box USA version. There is no purple box, unless some one looking at the box cover shot may think that since it is rather dark purple with a big red planet in the middle. I think it is the real thing, there is only one version from the USA?? This is my box looks like. I suppose you could say it is purple. It is the original from 1998. http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5953/boxshotd.th.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Rebellion 2008: Remake of a new Source Engine.
Slocket replied to Slocket's topic in Rebellion Editing
I am using Dark Basic Pro. They have a free edition. It requires DX9 and Windows only. I simply use jpg, bmp, for now. Basic old school stuff. 3D seems to have to be in .X only but DB claims it can do Studio Max to recall, but I could not get it to work. The language is easy enough to use (well a bit quirky for sure), sort of like MS Visual Basic but with the capability to use 3D stuff (which MS Visual Basic ASFAIK cannot do but 2D) without having to have a four year degree in computer science to use. Plus 3D Audio is easy to use in DB too. I do not know if DB can do OpenGL or OpenAL since I am not using those functions (but I have worked with it before). No shaders or TL. Audio WAV or MP3. textures the same as sprites jpg or bmp. Obvious to use compressed jpg and MP3 if possible. There is another version that is more familiar C++ and uses MS free 2008 Express SDK. It is called Dark GDK for more speed if it needs it. Nothing fancy with the code, just really only takes one author, I am not good at organizing a huge project, so tend to be lone wolf. I suppose I can release what code I got, but it is not documented or pretty looking. I ran into some serious problems a year ago, health related plus financial burden, seems like that is never going away; so I guess I might as well finish what I started, and in the end someone can take the code and finish the project. I do have a working 3D tactical demo, and a working 2D strategic tech demo, but I want it to do a little more so peeps can look at it without a good laugh. -
Rebellion 2008: Remake of a new Source Engine.
Slocket replied to Slocket's topic in Rebellion Editing
Still working on it. Sorry for the delay . First will be a tech demo just to make sure it will run on all Windows OS and DirectX 9 cards. -
Has any one played Settlers 7 ? I am not sure what to think about it. It does not seem to be like the ones from the past versions (I played them all from the beginning). Of course having a human player is much better, it is directed toward multiplayer much more than past versions. Sadly, the DRM they use is not very good. I still have it auto freeze on me since patch 1.03.... I understand it has to do with anti-piracy; but wow, they throw the baby out with the bath water, as the saying goes.

I guess that last post is gone. Another donation made to help keep the site up. I hope one of our project remakes will spark more interest. I am so over due in releasing a beta for all to play with.

Bunch of questions (Hooray!)
Slocket replied to Rebelllllllllllllllll's question in Questions from Newbies
You can take the data points from the RebEd chart and do a simple polynomial approximation. A quadratic shoulds suffice Ax^2+Bx+C use three data points and solve (matrix math if you want 3*3 way); or by the yea' ole' formula from high school algebra that solves for quadratics. There is a way to speed up natural basic movement in galaxy for personal not on a ship, factory deploymemt, etc. See link here. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=27590&p=541929&hilit=+speed+hyperspeed#p541929 File name GNPRTB.DAT Rebellion --- Novice 00000032 --- Intermediate 00000036 --- Expert 0000003a Empire --- Novice 0000003e --- Intermediate 00000042 --- Expert 00000046 Millenium Falcon effect --- Expert 00000a5e --- Intermediate 00000a5a --- Novice 00000a56 -
Rebbelion interface is a good tuff subject. Doing the old way does lead to a lot of clickfest. The Sins way is a 3D zoom-able. We are trying to show the huge overall picture, yet show easily the small four or five layers deep. The Huge vs the Small view. I would imagine any commander in the military would like a system to show that. Some times I am think about going the Sins way...doing 4 levels of Window like UI is well, similiar to the old, but I do manage to get rid of one level by displaying the info on lets say planetary assest down below upon the screen using the higher resolution we have today, as a hover over pop-up. I have been mulling this for a year. I think I should just show some workable examples of a zoom in feature (oddly my mouse button scroll does not work very well, took me a while to figure that one out, so it would need a zoom analog calibration screen). I can finish the older , almos the same old Reb interface, but wow it would be nice just to zoom in and see it all there in 3D. I believe most peeps will have the bigger computers to play by then, if it works on my old dog of a Pentium 4 2.8 MHz I think it will be OK. Hopefully please do not laugh if I never finished all the old systems since once you really get into it...there is no turning back, else wasted time. I do have the old version style of discreet layer zoom as they did in the original. But yet it really is not fun keeping track of that huge mess....Evaders99 may have been right after all on going the SoGE way of doing the Huge vs Small UI. The GUI is not a trivial problem..that we all can agree upon. I say just try out some ideas and see what sticks.

Bunch of questions (Hooray!)
Slocket replied to Rebelllllllllllllllll's question in Questions from Newbies
The four slots are for four groups of fighters. Red , green, gold , blue group. Capital ship and fighters can both be assigned to attack only fighters or only capital ships. Capital ships have a hard time hitting fighters, but if the cap ships have lasers they hit more often than the capital ships turbolasers (which are too slow to target the fast fighter). You can think of it like a WWII game with cap ship are the carriers, and the fighters are the air planes. -
Here is some neat stuff for a remake. I found tools to create random planets, terrain, and descriptions. Galalmyn Region: Core Worlds Climate: Temperate, dry Gravity: Standard Moons: none Length of Day: 19 standard hours Length of Year: 240 local days Sapient Species: 93% Human, 2% Kel Dor, 1% Ithorian, 4% other species 44 million Government: Participatory democracy Affiliation: member of Empire Capital: Top Rif Major Exports: labor Major Imports: labor, technology Knowledge (galactic lore) DC Result 10 Galalmyn is dominated by a massive cityscape, featuring several layers of urbanization and towering skyscrapers. Galalmyn's economy is primarily driven by the export of natural resources. 15 Galalmyn has limited starport facilities, but most fuel and services are more expensive here due to their scarcity. Docking bays are equipped to handle nothing larger than a Colossal space transport. The starport is lightly patrolled and guarded by poorly trained (sometimes volunteer) security personnel. 20 A government astronomical observatory is located on Galalmyn. It is rumored to have a secret purpose. Knowledge (bureaucracy) DC Result 15 Laws here are fairly strict, so individuals cannot acquire licenses for Restricted, Military, or Illegal items. Increase the DC by 5 for all Gather Information checks to acquire items through the black market. Knowledge (technology) DC Result 15 Electronics, nuclear energy, and basic spacecraft are produced locally, but droids and repulsorlift vehicles cannot be built given their technological complexity. http://www.gmsarligames.com/planetgenerator.php World Maker, GeoControl,EarthSculptor, ...opps lost my links for pics. But it makes cool computer graphics generated alien terrian and 3D world sphere planets. Makes it easier to put together 300 or so major SW game planet pics made to order. Questions about Missions, Agents, and something
Slocket replied to Dabbs's question in Questions from Newbies
The mission "Incite Uprising" is based only upon Leadership skill. In the game manual page 106 US version. Combat only comes into play if the character is foiled and tries to escape. Avoid Foiling comes from the character's Espionage rating. -
I have the Arc Hammer backup here: http://rapidshare.com/files/367424418/Arc_Hammer.zip Never fear, Slocket is here.

I wanted to place the status bars under the planets then give out the tech demo. Soon, always soon. I too, had to pixel by pixel color in hand the blue (black) odd pallet color that will show as invisible. The originals came from 200*300 images found around the net and from the game itself encyclopedia. Also from in game live photo prints from other games of old that never went any where. It is tricky resizing the images down due to so much distortion. The techy demo is not finished, I tend to be a perfectionist also , but I need to show something to make sure this is going to work on other computer combos and OS. So, if peeps do not laugh at the fact it is not 100% done with all planets and stuff. It is alot, alot of work. Maybe others can fill in the planets, the editor tool "Galaxy Mapper" is included. You can place planets where ever you like, and set loyalty, ownership, popular support, etc. Then stuff in your own artwork for the place holder pics. I have the 3D engine down, but I am keeping that seperate for now from the 2D strategic phase of the game.

It is a remake of Rebellion, a whole new code but use a fair amount of the original art work, sound, music, cutscenes from the original game. So it is a new game EXE that will run under XP, Vista and W7...any thing that can do DirectX 9 so maybe emulation on any OS that can do it. I nicked those photos from all over the Net. I changed the resolution from 25 pixel square to 50 pixel square. It does take forever to make 200/300 planet images for the original game. I am surprised they would fit back into the original game dll. You did a good job getting those to 'fit' back into the original game. So yes, that was/is the game I was/am coding from scratch back in 2008, but I did not work on it continuously (since it is free). It will look like the original but look carefully and you will see that I have the dimension problem of the orginal corrected with higher resolution, and making several nice changes to the original clumsy interface clickfest. 10 years of technology allows much more room for innovation. I hope now I can get back to it and finish it.

The planet icons look like very familiar. Did you get them from the same source off the Net? http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2452/rebsneakpeek.th.png http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2452/rebsneakpeek.png

Nothing published. But look inside RebEd and you can see the Chart profiles of mission success based upon the differences in stat ratings to chance success. You also have Decoys/Foilers and total number of characters (mixed with Special Forces) that go on a mission. That is a mystery. Too many decoys and characters and maybe your mission gets foiled, but your main minor characters will usually escape unharmed. Then again if not enough decoys, you run a real risk of your character getting caught sneaking by foilers and troop regiments, or enemy characters high in espionage protecting that target. This is for me one of the most fascinating aspects of the game and would like to play out a small card like 2D after action report showing what actually happened during the mission, success or failure, who gets killed or injured, and escapes or captured using stat based and abilities play out. Either automatic, so it is not so micro managment, or manually for those important missions where you really want some more involvement.

I played this CRPG Venetica and it is similiar to the old Gothic games. It is better than I thought it would be.

I would like the research speed bonus for characters working at a bigger Starship Facility, such as if there are four starbases it would give bonus of 20% speed. Research options that can be paired, such as shield penetrating proton torpedos, and point defense to counter act them. Lets you have some decisions on research. I like the population idea. The planets seem a bit empty and it should take alot to sway a fully colonized world. I would like to keep the Decoy Agent system for away missions. That will take some kind of spec forces or generic character to cover you main character mission. Some simple ground battle 2D (somewhat like those card based games, Warlords 4) to watch, for invasions and mission reports. I am glad to see you are still plugging away at this game. It does take some time.

Rebellion 2008: Remake of a new Source Engine.
Slocket replied to Slocket's topic in Rebellion Editing
Yes, but it is slow going. I posted a picture of it in another thread of the 2D interface. I need to place a demo here just so I know if it is goingt o work OK on different OS systems, Vista/7/XP 32 and 64 bit. Plus Resolution of monitors. I have so it auto adjust, or just run it in 'window box' mode at 1024*768. The GUI is very much exact to the original but better layout of the space on the monitor. I madr the demension exact for the sectors, the original was distorted vertically to fit the screen. The GUI is what is taking forever to finish. http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2452/rebsneakpeek.th.png http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2452/rebsneakpeek.png I will release a test alpha when I finish the loyalty bars under the the planets. It is just like the original but better. -
OK. I posted a suggested fix for another person who had the problem trying to get past the MDATA.00* movie cutscenes. It maybe part of the copy protection. I do know for him using the **** off the net does not play those movie cutscenes so it will work without the CD. It should fix the problem but you will have no cutscenes.

I think it would be nice to see what planets you used, and how you laid them out. If the planet layout is according to cannon. Worth taking a look at.
