Well, tough. But I seem to remember the name and guess you´re right. Hows that for a nice comment?
-
Oooow, Dark Forces ... Those were the days!
-
I didn´t intent to say "love it or leave it" just point out that it is a great game regardless of its faults. Sorry if it sounded a little harsh. Of course it´s one of the functions of this board to discuss those faults. I will keep an eye on the game for preknowledge of fleets in my games and check if I remember correctly.

Don´t know if this is helpful...but the Star Wars CCG (collectible card game) has made a card for virtually every character that appears in the first three movies (and probably the new ones too). This might be way to learn the name and rank of the "old guy" mentioned above. I´ll go check my collection later and see what I can come up with. Incidentally that´s where I read the name BoShek for the first time. I choose it for a nick on this board, because I thought it wasn´t really well known. Shows what I know...

Frankly, I don´t see the problem. You only get info about incoming fleets from spying. If the enemy fleet is headed for one of your planets you have to spy on your own planets *and* get the timing right. Although there are players who regularily do that I find it difficult and tiring to keep up the constant spy missions. In my experience it´s rare to know where the enemy will arrive. As for "ruining" the game: This site exists because everyone here is convinced that SWR is a fantastic game even with all its flaws. If you truly think it´s "nowhere near there" maybe it´s the wrong game for you. As for withdrawal from tactical battles: On the one hand you advovcate hit-and-run attacks for th Rebels on the other you complain that a fleet can immediately withdraw. I find that inconsistent. The option to withdraw is what makes hit-and-run possible until the arrival of interdictors later in the game. After that battles tend to get decisive. I don´t see the problem here either.

Thanks for reassuring me. It´s true that I probably built faster because I had more refined materials from scrapped facilities. Maybe my opponent realized he was falling behind and blamed it on the game. As to imperial slave labor I feel this would be offset by the enthusiasm of the free workers on Alliance planets knowing they are working to protect their freedom. What, me biased ?

My current opponent claims facilities take longer to build for the Empire. Unfair disadvantage or feeble attempt to hide poor play ? You decide.

How realistic are the last 15 minutes of Return of the Jedi
BoShek replied to igorimp's topic in General Discussion
Now it´s my time to be embarrassed. Because either my english or my SW knowledge is letting me down. Is that "crane" as in " large long-necked wading bird of marshes and plains" or a tool for lifting heavy objects ? Did I miss I major character in the movies carrying a bird? Now I´m utterly confused. Help ! -

Don´t know what´s the matter with you. Wedge is among the Rebels finest and the only pilot to survive both Death Star Runs. Besides I´m not literally a Wedge *fan*. But didn´t it ever strike you as odd that you always just get to see him in that helmet even in the game? That´s what I call silly. -

I just watched ROTJ again yesterday and it was brilliant. For all I care "realism" (or what passes for it in sci-fi/fantasy) can go @#§&Ö itself. Also you get to see Wedge without that helmet at the end ... -
Great going ! Keep it up and you´ll make lieutenant by mid-2005 !!

Actually you can´t exactly play from this board. We use it to get to know each other and then communicate via ICQ or MSN Messenger or meet at Gamspy Arcade (http://www.gamespyarcade.com).
-
It´s not exactly a cockpit view but you can have the view follow a taskforce or fighter group. Press F1 - F8 for taskforces or F9 - F12 for fighter groups respectively. It *is* in the manual ... I feel it´s rather confusing though and you can´t really follow the course of the battle.

Fleet disasters? Never heard of that. Is there really something like that? The only disastrous fleet encounters I know were of my own making when I attacked a vastly superior enemy. Btw is your game against the AI or multiplayer?
-
Sounds good to me (especially the massacre part). I´m currently learning the ropes of playing the rebels, so you´d get to be the Empire. Maybe we can set something up for the weekend. I still can´t get the MSM messenger to work on my office comp, so I´ll have to play you from home. I´ll just go and send you a personal message.

In my (multiplayer) experience, 2 Gencores are absolutely vital. Otherwise a rogue fleet behind your lines can quickly bombard your mines/refineries and thus your economical base to dust which ultimately loses you the game or worse still they can assault and scrap also destroying them but adding the cost to his refined materials to boot. Of course he may sabotage the gencores, but that takes some time. Also unless he has intelligence on the target planet, he risks losing the sabotaging personnel if you have troops and a general there. I feel fighters are not always advisable. A large attacking fleet will generally wipe the floor with a few fighters so the cost is wasted.

Do certain NPCs fare better in certain Systems?

Welcome to the world of Rebellion ! So you are a complete newbie Imperial, right ? How about a multiplayer game ?

Can the rebels still win if there's no Coruscant??
BoShek replied to Loserboy's topic in Gaming Stories
Firing the Death Star Laser at Coruscant ? You have a warped mind, my friend, and deserve to lose the game. How do you expect ever to get another nickname if you do things like that ? -
Thanks, pal. btw: I´ve heard a lot about your skill. Ask me about a game anytime. All I ask is a 200 day headstart. No, not joking ... Oh,yeah ... And knowing all the ranked players I´ll go with "unranked" thank you very much.

I feel it´s easy to get a wrong impression of the game. When it came out I immediately bought a copy. I quickly became tired of it though. I hated the long time it took the fleets to get places and the endless hours it took me to complete a game. Back then I was even convinced the AI was unbeatable on the "hard" level. Strangely for all the years in between I had the nagging feeling that there was more to the game. Recently I bought a copy very cheap and began playing again. Fortunately now I used the net to look for hints. Thus I learned how to beat the AI. Best of all I came across this site and began playing against human opponents. Now I´ve seen the light. This is how the game is supposed to be played.

"Wars not make one great." Just thought you might want to remember. Unless you´re an Imperial of course. But no one in his right mind would seriously adopt their way of thinking in the real world, right? btw: I would never dream of saluting a soldier, no matter the rank. I´m a civilian and proud of it.

You have to send a character or spec forces unit with them. Highlight the prisoners and your guard and move them like any of your units. It *is* in the manual ...
-
Thamks for your comments. I have another question though: Does it make any difference whether I order a diplomat/researcher to continue his work or just leave him alone? I feel the work goes faster if I do and the manual seems to suggest the characters waits for your answer for a while before getting back to work so you´d better click on that "yes" button quick. Am I wrong?

Hellooo, anyone ? You couldn´t have wanted to play too badly or one of you could have answered me. I´ll write you another message and hope you´ll remember there´s a game waiting to be played here.
