Though I wouldn't try and win that competition I think you could work on the project but without entering it. It should allow you to work on something and make getting the basics easier.

Well, as I'm applying to various places I'm expanding my portfolio somewhat. That A-Wing will take too long to finish for my portfolio (textures, renders, explosions bleh).

So, some character modelling - just the one render at the moment, going for a game model. It should look better with a head and some textures.

On the left is the original concept art (I forget who did it, but it was made back in the day when Westwood were making Command and Conquer 3). I've drawn over the top with some guide lines for meshing it up - helps a lot .. well, for most of it. Can actually make some parts more confusing

I'll plan the head tomorrow and model it, once done I'll optimise it manually, then use the original concept art to do the textures. Then, and only then I'll consider either making a higher poly version and lower poly and a normal mapped version (eep, that'll be a lot of work )

That is very cool Kryt! Once I finish the three ships u am working on I have to get back to training on Character modelling. I also have to try making a few droids.

*Gapes in awe* I'll have some spare time soon, I think. I'll sketch up some images and scan them, or else use paint to produce them. I'd engineer rough sketches in Max, but I don't have the skillz to do so. Speaking of which, I should really run off and download a tutorial some time soon.

The job I got was modelling some flats from a plan. happens its on a moutain side and its a big block of flats... But I am slowly getting through it...

I thought you'd modelled all of those pictures at first!

I finally finished those bloody flats!

Textures were done with Photoshop and a Wacom tablet. I can't really think of any suggestions about it

I had the concept art in front of me, made things easier. I used that to sample colours and slowly painted up in layers starting with a base colour and then dropping the opacity to 25% and flow to 55% for the brush tool and added darker and lighter shades for lighting.

OK I have an artsy-type question. Lets say I have a picture of me, and a picture of Darth Vader. If I wanted to take my head from my picture and put it on Vader's body, can it be done with Gimp? Thats the only cool software I have. No PS.
