So why would the Empire want to build a Death Star?
Teradyn_pff replied to Teradyn_pff's topic in The Bar
Are you referring to the fighter capacity? Because in Rebellion, the only interaction it had with the enemy fleet was its superlaser. And the rebel fighters had an option on their controls to send a fighter squadron against it if they outnumbered the Imperial fighters. They went offscreen to do the trench run. The Death Star was a bitmap outside the playing area like the planet. There were no shots coming from the surface weapons. And any shots fired against the incomming fighters were aproximated offscreen to determine the success/failure of the trench run attack. As for the asteroid field left after destroying a planet, there will not be a point to getting the reduced resources when you could have taken it over in tact with the conventional weapons you could have afforded instead of the Death Star. The analogy of the WWII A-bombs doesn't work because it was alot cheaper time and resourcewise to use them instead of the island hop. And they didn't destroy an entire planet-worth (or country-worth in the analogy) of resources. The resource argument is right out as far as I am concerned with reguard to the Death Star. This will not be like Rebellion where you have it at the beginning as soon as you get the resources and take the time to build it. You will have to upgrade to it like the superweapons in Generals. The only problem is, using it is like blowing up the max limit gold mine in the middle of the map in Warcraft II or III. Why would you do that? If you can afford to loose those resources, especially after having enought to build the Death Star in the first place, you don't need the Death Star. That is my main problem here. How will there be any benefit to having the Death Star worth its excessive cost and risk (due to the achilles heel)? -
Did you count your Clones before they where hatched?

Don't poke the curmudgeon with a stick. We tend to bite the stick and hand included when provoked. Or sometimes because we are just like that. -
You have got to be kidding me. No wonder they are selling to the EP I-III gap generation with their timeline choice. These turkeys wont even know what a SSD is! They will probably all be wanting the jedi starfighter and naboo fighter! GRRRRRR

Since the tech is not going past ANH (except for a select few for the rebels), we can almost be certain that the Death Star will not be able to target anything but a planet. Why would an Imperial player want to blow up a planet anyway? If they had the resources to build a Death Star in the first place, it is almost safe to say that they could take it over conventionally. At least they certainly could if they didn't build it in the first place. Is there some other benefit to having the Death Star? Does it temporarily boost your popularity in the neighboring systems ala Rebellion? Does it give an aura type bonus to grouped fleets or ground forces? And since we haven't really seen any space stations in the movies like the ones that are going to be in orbit in this game, will the Death Star be supposed to be able to at least target them since they are a relatively big, stationary target (unlike a rebel cap ship)? Just some questions about the feasibility of having the Death Star in the game at all given the level of tech we are talking about. I mean, its primary purpose wasn't tactical in the first place. (although it was a massive support base, lots of fighters, some cap ships, troops, mobile bases, etc. It was more of a dominance thing. Sure you could blow up a planet, but the resources lost doing so would make it counterproductive, especially if we are talking about the kind of backlash that action would produce support-wise with the planets like in Rebellion. Any thoughts?

The announcement of the next project for Petroglyph and their relatively small size would lead me to believe that there will be no expansion pack for EAW unless it is done by a different developer for LEC. This is of course possible, but I think that the way Petroglyph is doing EAW with the extreme moddability, there will not be a need for an expansion.

Maybe the forum moderators have had bad experiences with that particular hardware?

Bad news about the game....but hey! do not be dissapointed!!

I just hope those are not brand new ships like the "you know what". -
Is there any way to participate in the chat without installing the IRC client? Is there like a web interface for IRC somewhere? Reason I ask is that I will probably be at work during the chat and I can't install any applications on my work comp.

Tournament to Support EAW
Teradyn_pff replied to Ghostly_Substance's topic in EAW General Discussion
Um, how can you be a judge and a contestant at the same time, and what is the purpose of a judge anyway? We dont even know if observers will be allowed. And has there been any mention of a record feature? I can't see that as being practical for the galactic match. Maybe for skirmish though. -

Yes yes, I was referring to Legacy of War primarily. You guys have already modelled a few ships that should have been in the game from the get-go. -
Rumors of the SSDs involvemnt have been false.
Teradyn_pff replied to Vader89's topic in EAW General Discussion
With the 3d technology of that game, how could you tell? Unless you are referring to the cards... -

I think that our hope lies in some talented modding groups to fill out this game with the units it should have in it from release. -

Right, but even the one that is claimed to be 'Home One' doesn't seem bigger by much if at all. -

The Mon Cal in the game seem the same size as the ISDs to me. -
1. A New Hope (Except for the new stupid. SORRY LUCAS, DON'T TRY TO TAKE IT BACK! HAN SHOT FIRST!!!) 2. Return of the Jedi (Except for the old ending Ewok song and the new stupid Jabba's Palace dance number ) 3. Empire Strikes Back These are the only three in my book. The other attrocities you cite I will not rank with these. :P :P :P

But of course, I was just making a joke related to the timeframe. -
Fighters, how they dogfight
Teradyn_pff replied to Grand AdlGen frank's topic in EAW General Discussion
I agree. If you have time to worry about 1 tie fighter then you probably have won or something is going on that you should be paying attention to more. Or if you are so low on units that 1 tie fighter loss is catastrophic, you need to retreat. In light of this, it would be a waste of time on the player's and the developer's part to worry about 1 fighter in a group at a time. Remember, they are wanting to give us epic battles and I don't think you will be looking for 1 fighter in a melee consisting of over 100 individual fighters! -
Well, the comparison was the fact that Starcraft used a unique way to balance the units. The Terran player could walk all over the Zerg player if they met in a 1-1 battle with their starting units, but the key is that the Zerg player can build zerglings faster than the Terran player can build marines. So instead of an archaic method like in Warcraft I where you had an Orc Grunt vs a Human Soldier who were the same except for their skins, you can have truly unique units. I am saying that balance is not found by making the Mon Cal able to take on an ISD 1-1. It is in allowing the Mon Cal to win if it has fighter support taking out hardpoints and mopping up the imperial ties that are also not 1-1 capable against the Alliance fighters. This is what I mean by side vs side balance and not unit vs unit balance.

The Imperial march is post ANH so you can't play it in this game. Seriously though, there is hope for this game because it is being built with extreme modability in mind. An example is when Delphi-PG said that something like the Death Star could have its size doubled with a simple edit of an XML file. This as well as the mechanics of the space and ground battles will give us a powerful tool to mold the game how we see fit. So expect to be able to load a total conversion mod for Ep IV-VI gameplay fairly quickly after getting the game. And I guess you can mod in the Imperial march, Swiftdraw. -
Star destroyer landing on planets...

Ain't that the truth! -
Dude! Now that is a mod that would be pretty much impossible but cool to think about! Imagine Jedi Academy graphics and stuff with GTA? Instead of cops, you have Storm Troopers chasing you! Sweetness!

Star destroyer landing on planets...
Teradyn_pff replied to Eduardo's topic in EAW General Discussion
Ah, but can you do that? Can you occupy a planet and then drop say one transport at a time? This is the scenario I am thinking of: Empire comes in and blockades a planet. Resistance is light and soon there are no rebel space ships. Does the view switch immediately to the ground or does it go back to galaxy view? Could an enemy fleet show up in the middle of the battle? We don't really have a good grasp of the dynamics of a battle I think. If you win the space battle but have only 1 transport left, are you forced to land it or can you just occupy space? Ugggh. Makes strategies hard to think about because there are so many questions and ways it could go. -
May I see a copy of that NDA please? Id hate to get banned for breaking an NDA without knowing I was doing so. Why yes, good point, Makwu. I would like to see it to. ----I actually think he means members of this forum that are in beta. I can claim all day long I know some intricated detail and if I happen to be right by accident, it doesn't mean anything. Someone makes the same statement that is under NDA probably knows it from the game and will get in trouble. One of the tricks to getting people hyped up about a game and keeping their interest until the game ships is trickling info. It is working with us as you can see.

Star destroyer landing on planets...
Teradyn_pff replied to Eduardo's topic in EAW General Discussion
Then tell me, why can the ones in Ep 2 land? I'm thinking as a modder. If it isn't ingame(the Acclamator landing) I'm going to put it in there for sake of it being shown in the movie. Any hint of defensive fire from the landing craft? And/or can they be destroyed by AA fire? From the videos it looked like they just popped in and out really fast and the AA may not have time to take them out before the troops are out. I can't remember whether or not the landing craft are actual ships that were in space or not. When vader was dropped he came out of a Lambda Class Shuttle it looked like. Which on a scale setting would be about the size of 4 xwings maybe? Maybe individual units come off the cap ship this way and regular troops come off the persistant ships in orbit, but I don't remember if this had been specified. -

Ah, well that is an issue. The timeline for this game is supposed to be up to the end of ANH only. But they are grabbing some units from ESB and RotJ only to flesh out the sides. So what you see in the movies following ANH can be considered out of bounds for this game unless Petroglyph deems otherwise. But officially this game ends tech-wise at the end of ANH.
