Re: The big question: Is empire at war worth getting ???
Deadeye31_pff replied to Megajames's topic in EAW General Discussion
No offense to Petroglyph but I don't think the collector's edition is worth getting. The screen savers are far below par (a full screen version of the main menu battle would kick the asses of these. One is just the pictures from the manual of the A-wing, X-wing, Tie Advanced and Tie bomber bouncing around the screen, the other is a 3D show of the Death Star blowing up Aldraan. neither are that great), the wallpapers are either a shotty imperial space or imperial ground forces( 2 of each), the only new maps are for skirmish battles (would have been better to have more planets) and we've already seen 4 or 5 of the concept art pictures. The only cool thing is the box, it does look great in 3D but for the game, just get the $50 one. -
that is also the version used in Rebellion, too. Ya know, you can use actual ships people know about in Star Wars games. It's not a very thin group of ship types they have in the Star Wars Universe.

for $800 I was able to build my own machine. It came out great. Got everything from newegg.com. they couldn't be beat. Athlon 3500+ overclocked from 2.2ghz to 2.4 ghz ($201, free shipping) AOpen Geforce 6600GT PCI 16x ( I play Battlefield 2 on high with this card and for $140 it's the best you can get at the lowest price) Case with 3 fans and 480watt powersupply was only $45 and hasn't failed in the 3 months I've had it) Abit KN8-ultra motherboard was only $90 at the time but has gone up. Keyboard and mouse was $15 17" Monitor (My father works the New York sanitation Dept. and people are always throwing out old monitors so I go one for free) 160 GB hard drive (it's enough since I'm the only one using this comp) Windows XP Pro was free from School (go devry!) I also got my favorite Headset for the comp, I don't use speakers, I like the surround sound of a headset. With this I can play Battlefield 2 on high setting(except the lighting and texture which they set to medium, there's a ton of frame rate loss if you put those on high and it doesn't really change anything) on 800X600 I don't go higher by choice not performance. I expect nothing less than high from EAW too; I have the demo on high, infact. yes, I did build the system for EAW but I got Battlefield 2 and Special Force for christmas and love it. besides, the old comp (my mother and sister still use it) was 5 years old.

sorry, man, I think all you can do is shoot the bombers before they get to you.

I've noticed that sometimes, during th ground battle, and especially after a bombing run, the whole ground map will become seeable. Meaning you won't have a fog of war. Has anyone else seen this or know how to cause it?
-
I've been waiting forever for someone else to realize that. In space battles. pay very close attention to where your ships fire. they are firing at the subsystems because attacking those is what kills a ship. not just targeting the hull.
-
SirNuke is right. Each soldier has its own health bar that goes down by itself. When he dies it's like losing one guy in a platoon. till the end of the battle the firepower will be reduced. I don't know if they come back to full strength though after the battle because the demo ends after you take tatooine.

This is a bit sublte but to actually destroy ships in EAW you have to blow up all the hardpoints. It's like the squads on the ground have a certain number of troops and you have to kill them all to get rid of the squad. In space, you have to destroy all the hardpoints for the ship to finally die, unlike other RTSs.

according to my calculations Mon Mothma reduces the building costs of Units by 25%. imagine putting her on a major cruiser building planet, the ISDs don't stand a chance.

guys, we're talking about a GALACTIC CONFLICT, I am quite sure at it's height, the rebellion had more than enought WHOLE PLANETS!!! to train their troops. come on, if Osama Bin Laden can train a few thousand guys in a small camp in the mountains of this one planet, think about what a rebellion spread over dozens, if no hundreds or thousands of planets could do.

I agree, as it is, unless the Imps protect it or the interdictor heavily, a couple groups of Y-wings will just role through the thing. hell 5 squadrons of Y-wings can bring that imperial fleet in the Demo to its knees in seconds. That vic was rendered useless in no time flat. I don't think interdictors are going to be very worth it. Unless you have a massive fleet, a fleet that should be out fighting not turtling, then the interdictors are going to go to hell. If a few squads of Y-wings can be so effective against Vics and Acclamators, and interdictors or other specialty units are typically weaker in games because of their special ability advantage, then the interdictors are useless. Keep them in your fighting fleets, not in your defense fleets unless you're going for a trap.

I did see in a bookstore near my house that there was a comic that did a "what if?" kind of thing for Star Wars and somehow they connected the act of 3PO losing his head after Jabba hits him (this was in the film but instead of coming back, 3PO loses his head) to Vader eventually becoming a good guy and in the final couple pages, it showed him walk into a room on the Rebel Cruiser where the whole gang was and he was, to my astonishment wearing white armor.

damn, you modders must be obsessed. It only took like 48 hours for someone to figure out how to make their own server for battlefront 2, too. how the heck do you guys do it?

.tga not very user friendly. Isn't it?

Quicktime picture viewer is how you look at the pictures. On my comp quicktime was under program files so just click that as the open with... selection. -
If I may add one more thing. I pushed the C button so that I can do that manual 3-D view of my selected ship and noticed that you can't take screenshots in that view where as if you use the spacebar cinimatic view you get to use the screenshot button without going back to normal view. Could this please be fixed.

here's my best one. A Y-wings flying passed a Vic during an attack. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/Deadeye31/flyby.jpg

How exactly do you call for reinforcements??
Deadeye31_pff replied to rogueace127's topic in EAW General Discussion
it's not hard. Besides, if you want to conserve, use the bombers and wait for them to reload. -
Well, the demo is out and as long as you have a few squadrons of Y-wings, hit the Vic's generators and it's cannon fodder. This is completely canon and realistic and the same probably goes for the ISDs as well, so much for the invincible ISD.

there is one thing I noticed. When you can still bomb things that are inside the shield. If you click on a point just outside the generator, some bombs will still fall inside and blow things up. I did this to the shield generator on tatooine. It felt very unrealistic and sort of a waste of time to see the shield at all when it was so easily bypassed.

I have heard that you can make them unique because you can choose what weapons go to what hardpoints, so if you want a unique ship each time, make them.
-
hmm, if you notice, when it shows the total money you have it uses the credit symbol from Star Wars but if you look at the prices they're in dollar signs... just an interresting observation.
-
That's not a wookie. It looks like Rambo with a green shirt. It must be a bounty hunter or merc or something special.

I seen many games, most especially the Rogue Squadron games, show that there were A-wings around shorlty after the battle of Yavin. They may not be the novels but they are Lucasarts and what they say goes more than even the novels. besides, the rebels sort of need the A-wings since they need a fast way to remove the ties so they're population cap hogging fighters can go shoot at the capital ships.

and the Borg cube only hold 1,000 people? That was the number in Armada 2. Now looking at it, there has to be at least 20,000 borg inside, though I think it still might be less due to automation of everything. I did read in a novel, that to defeat a romulan Warbird, the Enterprise-D did infact fly into that large gap between the dorsal and ventral sections of the warbird. The novels also, during encounters with Romulan Warbirds will state that one is 3 times as big as the Enterprise-D.
