Quality vs Quanity

Which do you prefer?

I am a strategy player that would much prefer to build lots of cheap ships, weapons, and troops over building the more heavily powered things, esspecially early in a game.

Some consider this poor strategy, but I think it is one of the best strategies you can do. It allows to quickly swarm the enemy early in the game (esspecially if they are a specialist player who focuses on "Quality" and helps you build a foot hole. Once you have taking over some "territories" and have them well defended and start bringing in the resources you can now afford to start bringing in a stray heavy weapon every now and then. I wouldn't get to greedy doing it tho, I would keep building masses of cheap weapons, till you have the other player against the wall, then you can build all the heavy weapons you want and pull a hammer down on them.

I am interested to see how multiplayer will work out. Be interesting to see if one player on a team is a quanity player while the other is quality. Highly effective tandum or doomed for failure?

QUANTITY IS TEH MASTER

ok people say that in star craft the protoss are over powered and this is true.....now be the zerg focas on gettin lots of hhatcheries fast build 1000000000000000000 zerglings AND WOW the protoss r dead.(also works against terrans)

in aoe aoe 2 and gbg against any player tryin to get the uber units just build to lvl 3 get hvh troopers and anti air and BOOM the other dewd = dead

i think s balance is the best strategy, cheep units for attacking, but have heavier troops for defence. you can lose a offencive battle, but as long as you don't lose any defence, it really dose not mater. tho if there were vet units i would assign a few of those to attack if i know the enemy is just massing weak units.

Nevets I play similar tactics too. Lets face it in the beginning your broke and strapped for cash. I build up the cheapest offensive unit there is and go for the resources. Soon as you get the cash start building the good stuff. I've played against players that just sit there and wait.

I usually have a relatively small force compared to everyone else, but it usually composes of the most upraded or the two that most complement each other. I go for quality, but sometimes the swarm of other players takes it's toll on my smaller group.

In terms of powerful unit, depends whether I need them. Having an early defence in a powerful ship may work wonders, but if it's not required to repell early rushes then I might as well use those credits on upgrades and smaller more effective units.

It really depends for me. Quantity in the beginning, to think an attacker, with the quality units behind. DoW for example. Sure at first your stuck with infintry type units, and they're always good. But once u can bring in some dreads, they're worth 3-4 times as many infintry units. Different numbers and quantity for different needs, or even mixing it up.

I'm more of a quality geek. I always like to see my stuff upgraded to the max and let them squat all the unupgraded fools. It's a kind of feeling of prestige that comes with it I guess.

But sometimes I do feel like playing very offensive and going for hording and really brutal rush/suicide tactics (à la Red Alert2 Libya/Cuba style)

Eh, you usually don't want to start a game being to defensive, it allows you to be back into a corner very early into the game. Also while you are building defense the offensive player is jumping from neutral system to neutral system, capturing it and gaining their resources.

but nevie

i was talking in general, if it peratained to EaW, then i would send in my shock troopers then bring my heavy guns for defending the system.

just start from coruscant and go out in a cirle could also work.

or grab all the wealth early and crush your enemies.

Heh I do like the idea of the rebellion being repressed and breaking free and fighting back a strong foe. Being an underdog and having to do all kinds of stealthy stuff.

It depends on the side. If I was playing as a rebel I would build a smaller more powerful fleet to hold off the imperials. As the imperials I would build I huge fleet to serach for the rebels and then have a powerful main fleet to smack down the rebel scum.

Quantity for me. Even back when I played C&C Red Alert, it was all about turning out as many tanks as possible. When I started Starcraft, I leaned to love the zerg rush. If I can pull off quality in mass quantity I'd do that, but if I had to pick one over another I go with quantity. The trick is then is to pick a favorible battle ground and not get into a Battle of Thermopylae where your forces are funneled into entrenched troops and you can't overwhelm your opponent.

Quality for the Rebels! Whoot! I will have smaller, more powerful fleets and armies for that matter, in which to crush the Imperials!

my favorite ships in star wars are corillian corvettes, nebulon frigates, and dreadnoughts i will always make a fleet out of those if i can. i would only have mon cals for my main fleet. In the beginning tho a few dreads surrounded by corvettes and some fighters is the best fleet, since you probably wont be engaging the imperials much to start.

  • 3 weeks later...

I think quality is probably best when used to its full potential, otherwise you should mix between them.

It is possible that a full powered X-wing can take out 10 tie Fighters, but probably they'll win due to the number of lasers fired even accidentally....

I like to be the first one attacked. That way I force my enemy to come into my domain and try to fight me on my turf and no one knows my turf better than me. Now while I like to play this defensive game to start with that doesn't mean i'm not expanding or harassing my enemy.

I'll probably throw in a lot of espionage/sabotage to start off with and send some diplomats to systems close by. Then it's all about amassing a strong defensive army and converting it into an offensive army once I feel that I've grown strong enough.

After the enemy attacks, I counter attack against him at a weak location just to take some resources away. By now I've already started growing and I have a strong base from which to strike the enemy.

Then it's time for the middle game.

But you could be surrendering the opportunities and momentum being on the offensive gives you.

Yes, I would be surrendering those advantages. But by going on the offensive you surrender the advantages of using my strategy. That is why there are strategy theories. My way will not win all the time and neither will yours. We have to be able to adjust our strategies to the enemy that we face. There is not one right answer with this and I am not trying to say that there is. I simply suggested my opening strategy.

One other thing is that you can't just use one strategy. If I play Multi Player, I'm always going to be under the same user name because I like people to know who they're playing against. If I keep the same strategy all the time then I won't be able to surprise the enemy with a strong defense or counter attack. So I mix it up.

If I'm playing chess, I can't follow the same moves every time I play, I have to mix it up and know that there are multiple ways to defeat my enemy. If you only use a strong center controlling game you miss out on what a closed game may offer you and what challenges that may offer your opponent. If you know your enemy, you can cater to their destruction much easier than to the destruction of an unknown foe.
