Well, I don´t know what happened, but the fact is that I couldn´t connect to this site yesterday from about 8.00 am to 9.00 am US east coast time. I was a bit concerned of course. Maybe E can tell us the reason?

Maybe your internet provider went down, and everything was just fine here for the rest of us :P:wink:

PS Eagle: what's up with your avatar. It hasn't loaded on my machine for the past couple of days :?

Sorry I haven't had any connection problems at all. I've had two or three reports about problems.. but everyone seems to be fine now. There was nothing scheduled to be down and no indication that any of the web services went down.

Russia claims Antarctica

I first heard of this last night on the Colbert Report. I was under the assumption that Greenland had a claim to the North Pole. It's crazy to hear of this.

Russian scientists hope to plunge to the seabed beneath the North Pole in the next few days in a miniature sub and plant a titanium capsule containing the Russian flag, symbolically claiming much of the Arctic Ocean floor for Moscow.

Russia, Greenland, Canada and the US all claim the North pole as belonging to them. It's always a topic for debate. I need to gather some funds to have another mini-sub go down and use thermite or explosives on that capsule.

@Eagle: Thank you.

@Mad: Firstly, what did you expect from one of my home movies? Didn't you read the Road Trip from Hell scripts?!? Secondly, great links- I laughed my face off at that first one! Poor kid... Edit: Reminds me of this prank! It would've scared the pants off of me if I hadn't known that it was coming already... http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/subliminal

Yeah, I have a link to it in my above post. It shows which countries have a claim to which part of Antarctica.

At the moment no one is allowed to exploit any resources in Antarctica, because it will undoubtedly harm the fragile and unique wildlife there. When I say unique, remember most of it remains as yet undiscovered given how inhospitable the place is.

New Scientist magazine has a couple of interesting links, reporting on the scientists who are working there. Check out their website and read more, but here's a hint:

Seen from the outside, Antarctica is a desert, frozen and all but lifeless. Dig below the surface, however, and you will find deep secrets. Thousands of metres beneath Antarctica's forbidding facade, at the place where ice meets rock, lies a land that is exotic, dynamic and above all, wet. Water courses around Antarctica's soft underside; it collects in deep, dark lakes, spills out into streams and rivers, and forms wetlands and marshes that have not seen the sun for millions of years.

Be a shame to harm or destroy this before it's even been explored and researched, because quite frankly what on earth is down there, cut off from the rest of the world's evolution?

I saw in the chart of the countries with claims to the continent that there is an unclaimed section. I ponder as to whether that is because it remains unexplored.

Edit: Going apartment hunting tomorrow and then to the Warped Tour on Saturday on Long Island. YAY!!!!!!!!!

Double Edit: If you look on the map on the web page, you can see my hometown from back in the island days. Who can guess which town it is? MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!1

And of course... the submersible will get stranded on the seabed and the Americans will have to come in and pluck the comrades and their flag off the ocean floor. :roll:

Doh! I already read the full article from a hard copy, and didn't check whether it had non-subscriber access. I'll check it out next week and scan it if it remains interesting..
