Maybe something as big as the Death Star took 20 years to build, or maybe he didn't start building it untill he had solidified his powerbase.

Very funny SOCL :P , I just meant maybe he tested it before Alderaan to see if it would destroy planets.

The DS was only used twice.

Tarkin used it to destroy Alderaan, and he had already tested it with the destruction of Despayre.

I don't think that the DS was built right after Palpy crowned himself. The DS which was bigger, was built in less than 4 years, with the design corrections. THE superlaser was designed int he maw, the only desgin that was available at the time of EP II was the superstructure. So for all that counts the DS of Ep II may have been jsut the hull, much like the Eye of Palpatine and such stuff.

I think Trej hit the nail on the head.

...but...

Did you mean the DSII here? 8)

Unfortunately, I think that the introduction of the Death Star into Episode II is contrary to everything we allready know. George Lucas has a tendancy to ignore the novels. Because Lemelisk (sp?) is credited with designing the Death Star in the novels, there is no way he did so in Ep II. Those flying aliens (sorry, I'm not realy that interested in the xenobiology of Star Wars) are credited with designing it. I was also under the impression that even the superstructure was designed in the Maw, hense the prototype found there. As for which was larger, the DS II was, I believe, half-again the size of the original.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Well, like mentioned earlier, the Episode II reference did not quite stomp out the idea of Lemelisk designing the DS and does not stomp out the Maw Installation and the prototype there. But, as has been discussed in GREAT depth, GL does indeed ignore the EU and there is A LOT of bitterness toward him because of that.

Not quite... The DS was 120 km. in diameter, the DSII sported a radius of 80 km. 8)

Actually, according to A Guide to the StarWars Universe Third Edition it states that the Original was 120km and the Second was 160km.

And their leader was Poogle the Lesser. I don't know about you but if I had a choice between the lesser and the greater, I would have chosen the greater.

Concerning the discussion of the DSII's size (diameter and all), there is quite a controversy over its size since different sources give different numbers/stats. Go to the STAR WARS Technical Commentaries (second link in my siganture) to read up on some research over the topic.

Yeah i've read that. It's a brilliant piece of complete overkill analysis! The holocaust on Endor made me laugh, as did the conclusion that the crew was around 30,000,000! Ok, how the hell do you keep up the logistics of a crew that size? Interesting reading but concrete evidance of the underlining fantasy of the Star Wars saga.... :?

Okay, to spell it out: I said the first Death Star had a diameter of 120 km. and that the Death Star II had a radius of 80 km. The diametr of a sphere consists of twice the radius. Ergo, according to my post, the second Death Star had a diameter of 160 km.

It's interesting you say that, Jahled... The website you're referring at and the picture off it you posted suggest that the first DS is 160 km. in diameter and the second 800+ km. The fun here is, that this comes from the same sort of conjecture you refer to when it comes to Dr. Saxton: http://theforce.net. They are featured on his new website as follows:

Moreover, when I told the bloke from http://mirror.wolffelaar.nl/zardalu.sytes.net/index.html that http://starwars.com lists the DS's as 120 and 160 km. respectively he told me thanx and he'd fix it on his new, permanent website: Jeff Russel's STARSHIP DIMENSIONS He did retain a link to the debate on http://theforce.net.

How would you like me to hurt myself, Scathane?

1. Rush across the room and head butt the computer?

2. Try and drop kick my TV out of the window?

3. Climb out of my window and attempt to climb onto my roof?

4. Boil some water in a pan and put my head into it?

5. ...or just head butt my keyboard from where I am?

Interesting post BTW!
