The Empire was collpasing during the four and a half years after Endor. They don't have money to pay Sienar for their latest fighters, f we leave the Defender I don't think we should have Avengers around. The Vigilance is much like an Interceptor, Space superiority fighters.

Tsunami, the IMPS already have two interceptors, three with the A9 included. I think the IMPS prefer a new bomber.

The Defender is more like an enhanced B-Wing, than an interceptor. It's a heavy and fast bomber.

Defender will be the most expensive, and more like a B-Wing, with A-9 being the cheapest of the Imperial fighters .

The K-wing (aswell as the new class starships) are not written about in the NJO series because the lists of ships and weapons that the authors were given was not updated to include those ship and fighters. The K-wing doesnt have a hyperdrive so I feel it doesnt really fit in the spirit of the rebellion/ New Republic.
