Well thinking about this if the source code is used then it should be possible to make a basic exporter/importer.

The exception says CAUGHT EXCEPTION FROM .\ENGINE.CPP:488 INVALID CALL

If you have problems with the viewer, try the link Bodin posted. You might get answers if you follow the links to the creator of the viewer.

Yea. Somebody is working with a plugin for 3dsMax7+ so that's a start. But yea, It's a little ways off for a converter.
