  1. Sweet. But it seems (at least on my computer) that login is required even for viewing. Might be better to need login only for editing.
  2. Gun control is lesser of the two evils. It has two benefits over free ownership of weapons: first, you can restrict some people from obtaining a gun license (ex-criminals, psychos, irresponsible people, foreigners) and second, you can (must?) keep track of gun owners. Statistics in my country say, that most "shooting" crimes are commited using legally held weapon. This indicates that black market is not boosted as Rob thinks, but on the contrary, it's reduced (or weapons obtained through black market aren't used for shooting people). This also makes police work much easier (if you can identify the gun, you can also identify the person responsible for the crime - one way or another). Also owning a gun has many risks. If your gun gets stolen, you're in big trouble If you draw gun in a fight, you can expect the other side to do the same (or to draw bigger caliber ), so instead of few broken ribs you might end up in hospital with penetrated lungs (the same goes for knives), if you get to the hospital at all. I'd vote for strict gun regulation like they have in Norway - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Norway. It's very strict, but I would sleep a lot better knowing that there aren't any full-auto wielding lunatics running around.
  3. Perhaps they got direct order from above to not improvise, or they tried and were cut out. It happened before so I wouldn't be surprised. Anyway, George just can't shoot a good romantic scene. Even babies can see that.
  4. That's no good news :-/ But did you check if there are any functions exported in those dlls? If they are, it might be possible to replace them by a simple trick (creating a simple wrapper library) and hence provide your own versions of hardcoded functions. Just think of the possibilities. More tricky will be figuring out what that function you're trying to replace actually does But that's nothing a little reverse engineering couldn't fix. Edit: I've looked into it and there seems to be some code in those dlls after all, however it is not exported outside (so it might be probably some implicit routines created by the compiler). Oh and if you actually want to get a look at the code and don't mind getting your hands dirty with assembler, then I can fix you a date
  5. Haha, that site pretty much says it all Btw. I don't like manadalorians at all. And that's another thing that bugs me about the Star Wars (especally the recent efforts), that everything has to be connected and explained somehow. Why cannot stormtroopers be just the elite (well...) soldiers of the evil empire (as they were to me when I saw A New Hope in a cinema for the first time). Why they have to be some bloody clones? And why can't Bobba Fett be just a Bobba Fett? The same goes for geonosians and their spherical seed ships (or what was that), Count Dooku and their Death Star plans. By this GL has completely ruined my SW experience. It's like watching the LOTR movies after reading the books, you'll certainly get something different than what you expected. For instance never imagined Death Star being built (or designed) by a bunch of bugs (and C3PO by a little kid). Also GL has managed to make the canon Star Wars universe quite a small place - as if the world turned around only around the main characters (or their direct family), which really isn't the impression I had from the first movies.
  6. I have a nasty habit of glancing at the keyboard at the beginning of each word, although I can type quite well without it (if I focus on not looking at the keyboard). Also changing the place of my right hand during typing (characters <--> arrows/mouse) and typing special characters (hashes, dollars, etc. and my language specific chars) forces me to look at the keyboard. So "not quite"...
  7. Well it worked yesterday, now the links are all dead Pity I no longer have those files.
  8. Hmm, this looks promising. I'd recommend opening your source code for the sake of the community, so that your program won't end up abandoned like RebEd. Also if people have access to the source code, they can help you with bug hunting and adding features (it'd be great if someone incorporated karukaze's tweaks for example).
  9. Christ, I forgot to make a second project to Electronic Document Preparation class (Electronic Publishing)! And I thought I could finally get some sleep, damn. Otherwise some of my finals ended up quite well (Digital Image Processing), others did not (Algebra ) And I already passed (at least I hope so) my first exam today (IT Security). Well, I'm off to do some LaTeX voodoo
  10. Oh, assault transport, that's what I meant. Maybe I should look to the encyclopedia before I post something, damn.
  11. Although I didn't know Paul much, I'd like to express my condolences to you and his family. I lost someone to diabetes recently, so I can imagine what he had to endure (and what it takes to live with it). Rest in peace, Paul. We will all miss you.
  12. Escort carrier? Look to the encyclopedia.
  13. And why does UCK do that? Btw. if you're runing the LiveCD as root, then all your settings are in the /root directory and no /home is needed. But again, I don't know how exactly UCK works Try asking on Ubuntu forums. Wine is very good (and free) and if you want to make more user-friendly, you can create icons/links (simple .desktop files) for your users and put them on the desktop (my Wine does this for me automatically).
  14. Hmm, have you tried running Cedega *not* as root? I don't use Ubuntu, so I don't know how it's set up, but most distributions don't allow root to connect to X server by default (security reasons).
  15. Lots Few hundred (five, four?). It feels better if there's always space to expand (and hide in). Not all have to be inhabited of course I'd like to switch from 2D view into fully 3D rotatable and zoomable "hologlobe" of galaxy. However I'm not sure if this will be easy enough for the player to orientate himself in, even with various visualization tools (like in Rebellion - territory/industry/fleets/etc.) And I'm not sure how well will this fit into SW settings, since most games and materials showed the galaxy flattened, but I'd like to at least give it a try.
  16. Oh my, I forgot to turn them on It should be fixed now. However if you discover any errors like being able to edit someone else's post or not being able to post at all, please let me know. I'll let you know
  17. I wish you the best of luck and hope there aren't any nasty hardcoded limits you wouldn't be able to circumvent.
  18. Here's the latest news. I've rebuilt the Terra's website using Drupal as a CMS framework. So now it features also RSS feeds if anyone is interested. So check it out Btw. the address remains the same http://terrastrategy.sourceforge.net
  19. Oh my god, how could I have missed this thread? It's bursting with wonderful ideas... It reminds me of one of my earlier idea for a drone carrier. It's ventral side was filled with similar drop launch bays and it's dorsal side was heavily armored (and equipped with laser turrets ) The basic strategy with this ship was to face the enemy with dorsal side for better protection and in the meantime to launch the fighter drones to swarm the enemy fighters (and to keep them away from the vulnerable 'belly'). However my graphic skills are poor and the ship ended up as something between a mushrom and a bulk carrier (take a bulk carrier and put mushroom hat on top of it)
  20. Mails are sent every hour, not immediately (sourceforge.net imposes some restrictions on web services). However basically everything is done now, I just have to create the forums, write some introductory posts/announcements and so on. I'll change the address tomorrow (I'll let you know). More info then, I should sleep now Btw. did you know that if you "pull down" Blender's main menu (it's actually a window and you're seeing only it's bottom part) you can get to a nice configuration screen, which can make Bleder behave much better?
  21. And maybe by the time you're done with studying ModTool, I'll have Terra in some useable state I'm working on GUI right now, foundations of input system are already done Btw. I'm rebuilding the Terra's website and I could create Rebellion 2 forums there if you want (pre-version of the new website can be found on http://terrastrategy.sourceforge.net/drupal).
  22. Blender is actually quite nice, but requires some time geting used to it. Also it should be easy to write custom plugins for it. Hammer (formerly Worldcraft) is for building HL2 maps, isn't it? Or can it make character models too? I have worked only with Worldcraft for HL1 (pleasant experience though). I guess SirLoin meant it comes free with download of Source SDK (over Steam?). Licencing price of the Source engine is NDA, which means you we probably couldn't afford it even if we pooled all our money ModTools should be easier to use (well I just installed it and I'm little disappointed), but I'm quite curious how big level of customization it allows. It's also useless for anything else than modelling, because it's rendering capabilities are very crippled (but that should bother you only if you want to create some splash screens, or wallpapers).
  23. There are some game SDK's (Clanlib, Allegro?) but they're mainly 2D biased (if that's what you had in mind). But why not to make it fully 3D? If you don't want the third dimension, you can always ignore it and you're nevel limited by the fact that there's no such thing as a third dimension. I say let's show 'em what we can do!
  24. Chmm, it should be in the export menu among with the other formats (File->Export->DirectX) Python scripts are easily recognizable in Blender because they have green snake icon with them. If you don't see these green pythons anywhere then perhaps you don't have the plugins installed (although it should be by default by most distributions). And few tips about making models for computer games: focus on low-poly models and texturing. If you want to have hundreds of ships firing at each other at the same time on the battlefield, it's obvious that every extra polygon rendered slows the framerate down a bit. So try to eliminate coplanar or invisible polygons (polygons that got somehow inside the model), the tiniest details (details that won't be visible most of the time, or that can be emulated by good texturing - like bumps on the ship hull) and focus on the most visible parts of the ships. There are many ways to do this (you can make a big detailed model using curves and boolean operations at first and then simplify it or you can make it like a sculpture - start from a cube and then shape it). Just look at any strategy game to see what I mean You can also check out http://www.xwaupgrade.com/. They have some nice tutorials on texturing starships. Also if you have any questions just ask and I'll try to help you out.
