Surprisingly enough I have found out why Americans drive on Parkways and park in driveways! Te answer came to me late last night in the form of a drea- okay, fine, I read it in "Why do dogs have wet noses" from 1990, but still... Apparently Parkways were so-named because of the trees and grass growing alongside them, designed to make them look like a recreational park, with 'way' being a path of movement. A driveway is a 'way' from which you move to drive- thus driveway and parkway were formed. Who knew?
