The Hyperdrive must also help propulse through Hyperspace. The shape of the ship can also have an effect. i read that Solo modified the Falcon so thast it streamlined itself in Hyperspace. I guess that all ships have security systems that if the Hyperdrive fails kick right back into Normal space.
