I've always liked an explanation like that, as it also helps explain why there are so many humanoid species in the SW galaxy, and so few "human-like" animals here on earth.
-
that is obviously a possibility, as the people of the SW galaxy have already breached the frontier from one universe to another...as i understand it, hyperspace is a different universe
-
i know that it prolly will never be explained...but i've always wondered how a species would evolve in two seperate galaxies so far away...i know that humans are a lot cheaper to use in films, but i would like to hear at least some attempt at an explanation, and one of the ones that has always appealed to me is some sort of direct connection between Earth and the SW galaxy in the distant past....the events of Zomama Sekot and the Vong would seem to make this at least a possibility, and would invite at least some potential for a new storyline.
-
i think i need to go dig out my copy of X-wing
-
maybe it helps with the glare off the ice...or better night vision...i'd imagine the first tunnels they dug underground were dark for quite awhile
-
i wouln't mind seeing a new version of those games come out...maybe with chiss and vong fighters in addition to the traditional ties and rebel fighters
-
i agree about sekot, from the time that was introduced it became fairly obvious....though i was almost hoping the vong would be almost like a bridge between how humans could exist on earth and also in a galaxy far far away...ie humans left the SW galaxy long ago, one group heading to earth and losing/abandoning the advanced tech, and the other moving to a different planet and somehow evolving into the vong

What are people's 5 ESSENTIAL wants for Reb2?
Shadow_of_Thrawn replied to Chimera's topic in Rebellion 2 Ideas
that's exactly what i was saying...an isd, or any ship, without engines is no more than a battlestation...and i don't really understand the point of either, aside from maybe saving some credits outfitting the thing with engines...though if you use the extra for weapons, it would likely negate any savings -
i was half expecting that in NJO...that the vong had actually evolved from humans

though i've never been much a fan of battlestations anyway...why build something like a golan, that can only be used for defense, when you can build an ISD or Mon Cal for defense or attack -

a golan would certainly look better, but in the end, what's the real difference between a battlestation and a crippled warship? -

why not both, as long as we're wishing. to create a golan type station, build an ISD with no drives at all, and increase the armor, shielding, etc., to build a defensive ISD, could only remove the hyperdrive. -
I have the guide...but its real title is THe Essential Guide to Alien SPecies...so they didn't include humans. the closest i got to an answer in there is that human colonists arrived on Alderaan 27,500 years before the battle of Yavin.

What are people's 5 ESSENTIAL wants for Reb2?

thats always been missing from the original game...no sense of history within the game...ships exist simply numbered in the order they're built, with no sense of continuity...id also like to see some sort of built in history in the game...ie, recording major fleet engagements, heroic deeds by the characters or their deaths. -

i didn't mean completely customizable...ie im not saying that you could cram 600 turblolasers onto a corvette, or give an ISD the speed of an a-wing, more like you have X number of weapons points, and you decide what percentage of X will be TLs, Ion cannon or laser cannon, similarly, you could spend more or less on shields and engines and alter the power of each. -
I don't think i've ever read the poem, but i seem to remember that coruscant was originally home to two sentient species, who eventually wiped themselves out in a great war. i don't recall coruscant ever being referred to as the homeworld of humans.

a few thoughts... customizable ships within the game - ie: start with a basic hull and a set number of weapons emplacement (quantity but not type) and then specify weapons/shields/engines, etc. - you could do something like have an anti-fighter SSD armed with a few hundred laser cannon, or a lightly armored, high speed star destroyer (ala a true battlecruiser) training programs - you could set up training missions for characters to enhance a specific attribute. I know that you can do this to a point by using lower-end characters against low threat targets, but there is always the danger of capture/death. -
Something about Star Wars NJO Novels?
Shadow_of_Thrawn replied to kaja's topic in General Discussion
While I'm not sure what it will be composed of, the EU will continue for as long as it makes money for Lucas Books. If they're going to be successful, they'll have to be creative obviously, but that's been true since Zahn wrote his first Thrawn novel. Did anyone envision Thwrawn or the Noghri right after ROTJ came out? Did anyone really see the Vong coming? There are a lot of possibilities out there, even with what we already know about...the Chiss, the Vong on Zonama Sekot (something will be written with them reconnecting with the force, maybe the first Vong Jedi?). And that's just some of the obvious stuff and ignores the fact that most of the other EU works were essentially created out of thin air, with only major characters, like Luke and Leia taken from the stories. Like I said, as long as people keep buying, lucas books will keep publishing. -
to answer my own question, it now seems obvious that the reason humans throughoughly dominated the galaxy in the films is simply that it was much cheaper and easier for GL to create a galaxy of humans than one of wookies, hutts, or rodians. Like many of the problems arising from the films (like why the starfighters of naboo seem faster and more advanced than the x-wings that would be developed 30 years later), GL has simply ignored the problem, leaving it to fans and EU writers to solve (and then ignore when the time comes for one of lucas' own projects). In this case however, I haven't really come across anything about the origin of humans.
-
I've often wondered this, but haven't ever really came across an answer. Where exactly are humans supposed to have come from in the SW universe? They are a species that inhabits and seemingly dominates the galaxy, yet have no known homeworld, while almost every other species has one. How could one species have become so dominant?

Covell is in the original Thrawn trilogy, so he survives. I'm not sure about Veers, but I don't think he is ever shown dying in ESB.

it has the added bonus of hurting the other guy, which is never a bad thing

How realistic are the last 15 minutes of Return of the Jedi
Shadow_of_Thrawn replied to igorimp's topic in General Discussion
all that taken into account...the rebel fighters were, and have often been stated as being superior to the imperial ships, and part of the reason might be that they were deemed unnecessary for the fleet. this attitude seems to be the one we are supposed to see, just look at tarkin's dismissal of the danger they posed. in the imperial strategic mind star fighters were a nuisance and nothing more, suitable only for dealing with other fighters. thats what ties were originally designed to do...beat the best fighter that rebels or smugglers or other outlaws would have, those being mainly z-95s and y-wings. the rebels, though some dubious luck got their hands on the x-wing however, which was superior to the tie fighter, and also had a secondary role as a capital ship strike platform that wasnt envisioned by, or needed with imperial doctrine. to counter this, the empire in turn developed tie interceptors, which were capable of beating the original x-wing entirely. by the time of endor however, the rebels had advanced ahead again with the b-wing as a replacement for the Y-wing and also the a-wing, which was on par with the interceptor. Rebels fighters, despite poorer supplies and funds were superior, because of how heavily that had to rely on them. building, crewing and equipping a wing of fighters was much more cost effective than converting mon cal cruisers or stealing imperial frigates, so thats what rebel tactics were based around, and the designs followed suit...producing more well rounded fighters, while the only role of the ties was to hunt and kill other fighters. -
Thoughts on Capital ship Class, where are the BBs

one other minor thing...i think the designation for a modern frigate is FF or FFG if it has guided missiles, i think PG is more of a missile gunboat -

i've always regarded the ISD and MC-80 as "standard" battleships, with everything else falling on one side of the line or the other...even though the Mon cal is more lightly armed...one other thing that you mentioned was that the mon cal cruisers were less heavily armored...from what i know this wasnt true, and that the armor and shielding on the mc-80s is what allows them to stand up to SDs
