I have no mouse for no apparent reason, it seems to have deleted the drivers, and reinstalling windows isn't doing the trick, so getting online is a nightmare, so just to say i won't be on for a while.

And you're sure, that the mouse itself is ok ? The cable, the pins, the settings in your BIOS ? For example, if you got an USB mouse, and the bios-settings are blocking that somehow ...

Ok, after having used my boot floppy to format my hard drive, and then reinstall from dos, i have my pc back. Having done it all without knowing what i was doing and figuring it out along the way!

But next time, ohhh yes there will be one, trust me, you can set the Bios to boot from the CD and insert your WinXP cd, which is also bootable.

Although if you want to have your harddrive running under Fat32, you'd still either need to format it from DOS or use Partition Magic on a working PC with your hdd. My 120GB one was formatted in under 3 mins that way, I could've bitten my arse for not having thought of that years ago.

ME ? Hmm, as I said before I skipped that one, but since my 98SE CD was also bootable I'm surprised, that the one from ME isn't.

Well, when I get a DVD writer on Saturday, I'll make sort of an ultimate installation dvd with everything I need to set up my pc. This one will be bootable (Nero, for example has that option) and it'll have all the nifty things, like my Partition Magic Dos-version to set up any of my pcs with just this one disc

Cause I got a feeling, that my notebook will require some severe maintenance. It sometimes freezes up, or reboots while actually booting

Chaps. My PC just crashed. When I restarted it it said my user profile had become corrupted and logged me on as a guest.

Everything is gone, except for the first bloody thing I put on it in 1999, which was Star Wars Supremecy, and the other start-up stuff.

I can access the internet with my old settings, which seems to be a little wierd, but not my email account.

I am deeply gutted, and feel as if my soul as been wrenched apart. Nothing like this has happened since I got my PC; up untill now it has ticked along reliably, refusing only to play certain games down to it's hardware's age. I've even lost access to my RebEd files, and the huge photoshoping projects ongoing for the TC!

I assume I can get all my data recovered, but nothing like this has struck me before.

Me can be booted from the CD, I remember doing it quite frequently.

Format a HD in 3 mins... I am bitting my "arse".... }

Good Luck with the PC, Jahled. It plainly sucks when the computer starts working against you.

BTW, early yesterday Norton Antivirus found some virii on my computer. One was the Blaster, and the other was the Swen.

Although I haven't the slightest idea of how it got into my computer I thought I'd warn you. Especially since most of the mails I send usually are directed at the rest of the REloaded Team.

Well, how the blaster got on your pc is easy: you either don't use a firewall, or haven't configured it to block that port, that is attacked by the blaster worm. Look at symantec's page, there is a reference to that virus and what port you have to close down.

Not likely. Most these worms now use flaws in windows themselves... a firewall won't be able to block them.

Keep using that Windows Update. And well, a program called BigFix does a good job at tracking various fixes for software. It's free. http://www.bigfix.com

Funny you should mention the Blaster virus, it was one of the 13 virus' Mask said perhaps created a world record on my PC...

It's a bit disheartening what you've said E, with my new Nortons anti-virus and Firewall i've been lured into feeling 'safe and secure,' from these fiendish worms people set loose targeting Microsoft products!

Come on guys! It's not Joe public's fault he uses a PC but doesn't know the full low-down to protect himself from your bitter attacks on Bill Gates! Give us a brake!

Does a firewall block Blaster?

Aye, since I took it offline for 5 mins and got immediately prompted by Norton, that the Blaster had found a new home on my laptop, mine does block it.

You can always look up http://www.sarc.com's virus encyc on how the worms operate, what files/registry entries they create and how to set your firewall to block 'em off.

After some pretty unnerving inbound 'service requests' I simply set mine to ignore every incoming tcp & udp service. The aps, that should go through are explicitly allowed to do so, otherwise I get prompted. So far (7 months) no more infections

Of course an updated virus scanner is worth its own weight in gold.

It was on his pc.. not mine.

I only had about a dozen... mainly trojans... but we only discovered all this when we got hit by the C. variant of the Sasser I-Worm.
