No, that's after the Grupo ICE makes it available for the general public. So far the DSL was in a test stage and in a limited use for the government and the corporative area.
DSL has been socialized in Costa Rica? 8O

Blue Chicks are great!!!!

Being the official HI holographer is a job I wouldn't change for nothing, just being around those nice blue/green/whatever color girls is the best.

SOCL, what do you have against those nice blue chicks?

As for the "socialized" DSL... Well, telecommunications are under the monopolistic rule of the Costa Rican Institute for Electricity (and Telecommunications). Even if it sounds a bit socialistic, and the service is a bit crappy it has its advantages. The prices are very low compared to telecomunications in the rest of Latinamerica, not to mention US and Europe.

No, guys, I have nothing against blue chicks! You guys got me all wrong! I love Chiss girls, and, hey, they're blue! 8)

Hey, Trej, I don't think that socializing telecommunications is bad thing...as matter of fact, I think it's a pretty good idea! I think they should do the same with medicare and some other things (as vague as that may be).

Chiss, Twi'Leks, Wroorians: Blue Chicks all the way!!!! ( Another GIF...)

Almost everything here is "socialized", and it works fine, after all Costa Rica is a small country. Thing is, that the US has expressed its intentions for Costa Rica to open up the market of telecommunications, insurance agencies and medicare...

RL? :?

Well, it basically means that the government owns it, the people pay a little higher taxes, but it's free (almost). I thought that the Netherlands had medicare and such socialized. For instances, I've heard the Dutch pay high taxes, but medicare insurance and such are free (or almost). Is that true? Did I get at least part(s) of it correct?

You should really visit the tropic, dude!

Yes, what SOCL said, the Electricity and Telecom Institute, Insurance Institute.... It all belongs to the state... Taxes... are acceptable for a third-world country, and the service of these two institutions is apt enough. Considering that the ICE (Elec and Telecom) cannot only focus on Telecom, they have to give maintenance to the elecritc plants, rural service... Considering the low tariffs they do a great job...

Capice. But don't you call this privatizing?

You could call it privatizing if they were in private hands, they are in the hands of the state. Privatizing was what our last president intended, he wanted to open up telecoms and have multinational companies (read: US companies with friendly links to the President and his family) take over about 50% of the resources of the ICE...

I hope that this doesn't happen to you guys in Costa Rica, Trej, because it means the poor won't be able to afford...well...anything! Additionally, it causes the prices of everything to skyrocket without any concern for the income of the nation's citizens. For instance, in the USA we have hospitals that remain idle for weeks at a time, yet a few blocks down we have a poor person die because he or she can't afford medicare. It's sad and sickening. :x Maybe I'm going to the extreme, but I think you get what I'm saying...

:?

...right? :(

That's the delicate of the Free Trade Treaty Costa Rica is about to sign with the US.

Mr Zoellick, from the US has demanded to open up the above mentioned telecommunication market. Also there was a key issue on medicines.

Costa Rica offers free medicare to everyone in the country, Costa Ricans, Nicaraguans, tourists, everyone. They are treated at the crammed public hospitals, and they get medicaments for free, yes even those folks that need AIDS treatment get them for free or really low prices. Therefore Costa Rica uses generic medicaments, they are the same stuff, but they are a lot cheaper, except in certain cases, even so the CCSS (the state institutions that offers this) is at times hard-pressed for money, the US has agreedto let Costa Rica use generics, although the US first wanted Costa RIca to use the US products.

Jeeeez!!! 8O You guys have all been struck by the seriousity virus haven't you?! 8O
I guess so. I didn't realize.

But it is an important issue.

So there are the ups and downs of socializing medicine, but I sure hope that the USA doesn't make you Costa Rica stop helping the poor. I mean, guys, it's terrible to see people dying everyday from simple (and sometimes not-so-simple) health issues just because they can't afford health care. And if generics work just as well as the "real"--not-generic medicines, then who cares? It costs less, does the same thing, and helps more people (because you can buy more with the money you save)!

Seriousity virus???

I think it comes and goes according to the thread. I think it's much like the Post-zootmatic Nervous Disorder you can never know which threads it will attack...

Let's hope the US don't start again with the medicines, nor with insurance...

At the moment, the Democrats here are fighting to keep medicare out of the hands of "big business," but with the Republicans dominating the executive branch (Presidency), the legislative branch (Congress), and most of the judicial branch (Supreme Court justices, most appointed by Ronald Reagan), it's a very hard battle...
