Victory Star destroyer

I wonder about the usefulness about Victory Star destroyer: how much it will be upgradable? and its usefulness on ground battle (I mean battle on planets)?

My guess is it will be the workhorse for your early fleets. You probably wont start with the ISD.

I dont know, however, if it will be able to affect ground battles. Having it send down orbital bombardments would be very cool, though!

I do know that TIE bombers can go bombing runs on ground forces.

Attacking enemy bases with turbolasers is a great orbital bombardment advantage for any ship with such a capability, but the VSD has the unique tactic, from Star Wars books I've read, to be able to actually come into the atmosphere and bombard from there. I don't know why I haven't heard of other ships doing the same thing though.

Who has some more info on this, and could it be one of those unique time limited ship skills like the ISDs deploying free TIE Fighters?

From the Wikipedia: "One notable feature of the Victory-class is that it is one of the largest ships capable of operating effectively in the atmosphere of a planet. This gives it an advantage over its larger cousins in planetary assault scenarios, where it can be used to provide close-support for ground forces, and to intimidate the enemy. This advantage did not prevent it from being phased out and replaced by new classes as the main warship of the Empire, but it did ensure that the Victory was often assigned to invasion or policing fleets to make use of this ability."

It's a shame we can't use the ship this way in the game.

well, it says that the Victory is the only one that can enter atmosphere, so why we shoulnd't?

because they maynot have put that in because it can only be utilised as a Orbital Bombardment method. if the ORbital Bombardment is none existent then there is no need for this Activity it would be a waste of Code.

Many of you have played SW Rebellion and have a good idea of their Obital Bombardment techniques:

There was an option to target Military, Civilian, or just engage in a General Bombardment. Each ship offered a bombardment bonus from 0 to 5. The VSD was pretty high. So that may be how they make the VSD special.

You are not able to attack targets on the surface with a VSD in EaW. For this part you have the Orbital Bombardment with X-Wings or even TIE-Fighters.

I don't think we have seen confirmation of Orbital Bombardment of any type. The attacks on the surface will primarily be conducted by Y-Wings and Tie Bombers from what we have seen. There have been screenshots of X-Wings engaged on the surface, but how or to what extent, we don't know yet.

Teradyn is right they havent confirmed it offically but its looking more and more likely. it says in the Gamespot written preview about halfway down (or at least some where) something about orbital bombardments.

You know VSDs also have hyperspace ratings of 1, instead of 2 like most other capital ships, so they can keep up with fighters while jumping.

The winglike protrusions on it are atmospheric stability fins, however we may not see it ingame in the atmosphere due to technical aspect of doing htat and depends on how flexible the game engine logic is

Well if they can have TIE bombers do a bombing run, why not a VSD?

Even if they did put in orbital bombardment in at the last minute, there is .00001% chance that they would model the Victory Destroyer entering the atmosphere to bombard.

They wouldn't have to!

It would be far too high in the atmosphere to see. All which would be required is for a sort of 'artillery' graphic of where the turbolasers actually hit. The user wouldn't have to physically see the craft in any way.
