Interesting thing about ion weapons. There seems to be a brain-bug* about them, i.e only being able to disable electronics, not hurt anyone.

This is not true, as electrically charged bolts would do horrific damage to biological targets, since they have electrical currents running through them just as droids and computers.

I also recall a SW novel describing an AT-AT's leg having two joints welded together by an ion cannon blast, thus incapacitating it.

*A "brain-bug" is a term used for ideas that end up being overstated when based on little previous evidence, i.e that bio-tech and bio-ships are better than metallic tools or that aliens are all alike in one culture.

But against a capital ship, the physical damage would be hardly noticable. Sort of like shooting a tank with a 5.56 NATO, it terms of physical damage. I agree that the ion cannons can really frisk up electronics and biological targets though.

Total speculation here... but from the look of that:

1) The bolt we see in the shot is past the SD while the explosion is only on the underside.

2) The ship seems to have been fully intact - in all other trailers, we see ships deteriorate as they take damage, so this one was probably in near-pristine condition.

For the sake of assuming something else, there are two possibilities: either that was a hell of a blast from a hell of a gun, or (I'd wager), we're looking at the effects of a sabatoge/bombing expedition. Simple put, a hero like Han Solo, or maybe a specialised unit, could have infiltrated the ship and planted a bomb on the inside. Sounds like the Rebels, and also explains why the blast is at a funny angle and is past the ship, and why the ship looks undamaged (other then the blooming explosion). Or, conversely, a smaller ship, such as a Corellian Gunship, could have rammed the ship from an angle that would hide it from the camera, although that is more unlikely.

Hmmm, i think your right, I have heard that the rebels have special abilities. Such as I think spys have a better chance of surviveing, and also i have heard that the rebels have a better sight range and some more stealth. The empires main tactic is overwhealming the enemy with masses of units and their stealth is more limited.

They did say ground weapons were in....

Yes, in the first or second intervew on game stop they mentiond being able to build weapons on the ground that could attack space craft.

it's one of the bottom two.

Edit: i have too look, the two interveiws i thought it was mentionred in it was not, but i did hear it somewhere.

I know that the bolt goes past the ship. So it wasn't the red bolt of doom that killed it. But going back to the ground ion cannons, you can also build ground turbolasers. I think those can also shoot into space. So you could build those to fight a space battle, then destroy them and make ground defences to fight the ground battle, and then switch before the end. A viable tactic if I may say so myself.

Heh, nice to know I might be on to something. Spy-type units could be great fun, as well - I wonder if they can only be used duringcombat, or it you can sneak them in while the system is otherwise calm? Planting bombs on ships to thin enemy forces before you strike could prove quite useful.

Ok, for some reason i can not find where it is said that you can build ion cannons but i know i heard it somewhere. or am i just imagining things, dose anyone else remember where it was said?

I think Brett Tosti (pardon me if i spelt it wrong) said in a video "there is a interplay between land and space where you can have y-wings come in for a booming run and have ion cannons shoot into space" i may not have quoted it directly because i forget how exactly it was stated.

Everyone, capture KUAT! Not only is it the key to the ISDs but you need it to research the Ground Based KDY Ion Cannon...

I'd bet we'll see the appearance of both Ground based Turbolaser Batteries and Ion Cannons. Though as to whether you can fire them on ground targets or if they can be targeted from space is an open question.

I think there will be a generic orbital base that you can customize by the addons you purchase and build for it. Like, do I add more turrets on this side, or do I put in a hanger bay for fighters, and that kind of thing.

Maybe that is one of the functions for space stations. LittleB said that space stations had hangers and we know they have guns and missles. They would be the ultimate orbital base. I hope that space stations are powerful enough to kill of a few light cap ships and maybe go toe to toe with heavy ones (if there were only one).
