It's not just a couple of files that I want to move it's the majority of the stuff on my old computer. Nearly 40 Gigs. And some programs too. File sharing certain sections at a time seems like the most efficient way of doing it. I'm still going to keep the old one for gaming.

EDIT: Seems to be working now, thanks budious. I think I just needed to enable my old computer to be password login protected or something.

Why not just go to the drive icon and share the entire drive and copy the whole thing over the network in one go?

And yes, you do have to have a matching user/password account for the file sharing if full permissions are not assigned to the Everyone group (you would only see this if you are using classic file sharing mode aka 'administrator panel' of NTFS permissions).

Because I don't want to copy the whole drive all at once. The files on the old machine are so unorganised it's getting to the point where finding something is like looking for the freakin' ark.

I'm building up a new super organised file structure on the new machine.

...well that's the plan anyways.

External hard drives are great for what you want to do then. I upgraded my laptop hdd recently and bought a 2.5" USB2.0 externel shell for the old 80GB drive for $17 from newegg. Really handy for backups and files you want to go back and forth with often.

My 1 Gig USB jumpdrive isn't in the greatest shape and isn't likley to hold up to the kind of stress of running back and forth between the machines many, many times now. The outer case is starting to crack and it's only a year old.

(Damn you Taiwan! I hope China Invades you!)

Moving on. I used to think this was exageration:

See those spikes on the arm rests? That's WMP11. It doesn't play the video component of AVI files. Because of the spike placement you may not notice it right away but it will eventually STAB into vital arteries.

Jumpdrives may not like the multiple cyles of writings.

Better is a hard drive solution. Like budious said, you can probably get your hands on an exclosure pretty easily. The laptop hard drives are smaller, very reliable, but they cost more than the desktop 3.5" hard drives. The thing is that 3.5" drives are dirt cheap and 3.5" enclosures aren't really all that expensive. So that's what I use.

Are you sure the .avi file you are trying to play requires an external codec to display properly. I recommend downloading ffdshow, it's an all in one video and audio (Xvid, DivX, AC3) decoder. Also download VLC 0.86c, it's my favorite media player. I don't use media player unless its 6.2 (mplayer2.exe on 2k/xp). I have upgraded to Vista and being the Linux/BSD user myself, don't find it as bad as most of the Windows users are making it out to be. The only thing that is bothering me about Vista at the moment is the performance of my video card drivers but stability has been reliable.

On external enclosures, one reason to go with 2.5" over 3.5" is that laptop drives draw lower power and can run via power over USB. 3.5" drive enclosures will require external a/c power adapter.

Hey- I resent the use of the word "healthy." It implies that other people should be doing this and robbing me of my title....

Damn- I missed my two year anniversary... Do I at least get a cake for two years of posts?

Indocrination and manipulation of the youth is allways practiced by the evil dictatorships. And I really have to shudder when I see the result of that just happening in the UK nowadays.

Edit:

Ha ha ha. And congrats for your two years stay here in the forum. Just if I didn´t mentioned that before.:oops::wink:

@Mitth

Awesome find! Even better than the lightsaber-duells of the prequells! 8O Just the music sucked.

And just let´s try to bring back a little bit life here to the forum at weekends. ;)

And some personal 3d randomness. I re-did a render today (unfortunately I can't show you). The original render took 3 hours. This time, however, I did some tinkering with mental ray's rendering algorithm optimisation field.

Re-rendered the image at a significantly higher res (1024x768 to 1920x1200). Render time, 24minutes and 13 seconds.

Oh, and FINALLY some pics of my car ... yes, I over reacted before  Still feels bad knowing your car was in an accident.

Current visible damage: cracked bumper, broken tail light, exhaust is bent, spare wheel well is slightly dinted/bent and the boot lid is dented.

Rather pale when you looked at the other car in the pics. Like I said before, I almost laughed when I saw the pics for the first time.
