@Mask: 8) I've been looking (and waiting) for those  I found Insert 2 on Wookiepedia, but not the others. Any ideas on area 5 (around Hoth & Bespin area)?

(Can't wait to see some in-game screen's tex.)

Things are looking better now Def  Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll have some of them there in-game screen shots :D

Sorry, Defender. I posted everything I had available. I remember saving these files once, but can't seem to find cd, dvd, ... I must've put it on. What's worse is, that it doesn't even appear in the catalogue program I scanned all the discs with, to keep track of their content ^^

Tex, as you already read above, 'twas all I had, but I did a quick check on the Ison corridor and found something shiny on the WOTC website:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/sw20040325web

download the pdf at the bottom, it has a good map inside.

EDIT: just found this site. It has a lot of them, too. Dang lightning storm, better get offline... :?

EDIT: this one looks shiny, too: http://www.xs4all.nl/~wrvh/galaxymap/

untested though, it's almost 04AM here ;)

Nice work Tex fella!

I've just had a rather far-out idea with the galaxy map, that visually would enable you guys to shape the galaxy as close as possible to the EU Star Wars galaxy. Have loads of systems (even sectors) that you can see visually ingame, but have no effect during gameplay. I t would make the galaxy map look more 'detailed' and galactic, and enable the inclusion of Corporate Sector space, even the rubble of Alderaan perhaps somewhere (would be ace to see during gameplay even if neither player or AI can do anything with it; perhaps all that rubble is to dangerous to mine/colonize.. )

Emm, I might play around with Photoshop later, and try and convey what I mean; but there were certainly systems that remained apart during the galactic civil war, that were in no side's interests to conquer or pursued to join, such as Kuat, if i'm not wrong* :)

But Kuat did wire the yards to blow if they were captured, and you can't get ships without shipyards...

Arrrgh...

Hate to resort to this, I thought I had this info somewhere but now can't find it. Where in the .dlls do you go to replace the big pictures of the galaxy? I'm dying to use those nifty images Tex was kind enough to post.

Thanks.

Thanks.

You need to use Resource Hacker on the STRATEGY.DLL file, folders 902 & 903  I think there might be a problem with the "grey" version, as I tried it out and Rebellion went psychedelic on me :? I think something happened in the conversion process.

Anyway, try this mirrored version and its "blue" version

For some reason Imageshack made my files .PNG even though I uploaded .BMP files :? I don't know how Rebellion will "stomach" that, but try it and see. Worse case, load the file in a graphics program and save it as a .BMP; maybe that would work.

Despite installation problems i've had regarding the cards and planet locations i've discussed elsewhere, I've wondered about the Roche Asteroids system.

Along with tweaks to the images of Tattooine, Hoth, Bespin, Mon Calamari and Kessel, I changed the image for Roche Asteroids to the Kessel image using RedEd.

It got me thinking. There are at least 8 earthlike planets of various landmasses, cloud cover and size.

If we could replace one with the destroyed planet icon, it could be used for this system.

Also, personal preferance obviously, but I'd like to see the Maw Cluster feature near Kessel.

It could be colonised by the brave, (realistic in light of The Maw Installation from the books)

A system showing seven black holes of various sizes would be required though.

I've already worked that into my new galaxy configuration for Alderaan  I've yet to update the planet icon and sector configuration yet, but at least I have all of the "new" system names  I'll try and get some sector pics with system names soon (been pretty busy, and it doesn't look like it's going to lighten up anytime soon).

OK, I've made some progress, but ... I have yet to change planet icons (with a few exceptions), and adjust their positions within their sector. I don't know if I want to even mess with the encyclopedia texts at all, I mean ... there's like almost 200 changes to make :? That's where I'll probably draw the line. So first some pics from RebEd showing galaxy info, then in-game galaxy pics, then the sectors themselves. I did a little cut & paste on the sector pics, as some of the system names (when colored: red especially) didn't show up very well. So, I ran the game a couple of times showing mostly "neutral" systems so the names can be read

I did all of these screen shots as thumbnails, as I don't want to "clog up" a whole page with pics, plus for those with slow connections, you can pick & choose a bit. Definitely check out the very last sector pic; it has the "Unknown" sector

WOW, Tex,

Beautiful job. I've been toying with the idea of doing this myself. It's a huge undertaking.

Any thoughts on posting this as a .reb file? Also, I was wondering how many of the worlds are canon? I recognized most of them, but a few were new to me. Admittedly, I'm not thoroughly up on all EU sources; I haven't read most of the comics and don't play the RPG.

Love the Unknown Regions! Most of the references I get, but how about a guide to these new worlds? (I'm not familiar with Othana(?) and a couple of others.)

Great work, dude!

Well first off, all of the systems names (with exception to the Unknown Regions  ) come from the galaxy map located at the beginning of this thread  I don't recognize many of the names either, but I have read most of the EU books (no comics & no RPG, etc).

I'm not sure a .reb file will pull this off as I'm not sure which files RebEd manipulates. I've changed four files to pull this off: STRATEGY.DLL, TEXTSTRA.DLL, SECTORSD.DAT & SYSTEMSD.DAT (the latter two being located in the GDATA directory).

The Unknown regions I had some fun with  A friend helped me with a couple of names, but here's the tie in:

Bob: Titan AE

Othala: Stargate SG-1 (homeworld of the Asgard)

New Caprica: Battlestar Galactica

Vulcan: Star Trek

Druidia: Space Balls

Earth Mk II: Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Altair IV: The Forbidden Planet

Epsilon III: Babylon 5

Magrathea: Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Thermia: Galaxy Quest

I've just noticed you have two Vinsoth's, next to each other

Uh ... the first one's a decoy? I thought I had corrected that, but apparently not :? One of those is supposed to be Mandalore :)

Thanks for the find J, I'll go and correct it now

....

The system name is correct in my file :? I guess my "cut & paste" with neutral systems, so to read the name, must have screwed up

So how much of this was done in RebEd? I know you had to use ResHack for the names (& descriptions, if you wanted to), but, though I haven't messed with it yet, I was under the impression that you could move everything around, switch planet images, etc. all in RebEd.

I'm still playtesting my own conversion, mostly looking at unit stats, etc. but I'm interested in reconfiguring the galaxy as well. I've actually started compiling some info from the various maps available, plus info from Wookieepedeia. I'm not trying for perfect canonosity, but I do want to have all the "big" systems in the right places, with others being relatively in the ball park, plus a few of my own systems thrown in.

Obviously, laying it all out takes a lot of time. Then to actually go in and deal with 20 sectors, 200 systems... sigh. I guess I'm wondering just how complicated the whole process gets. Could you maybe post a brief and general outline of your process?

Again, kudos for the impressive effort. It looks great.

Thanks :D

I did use RebEd to "move" the sectors around the galaxy, and plan to use that (although not necessarily required) to change the planet pictures. As for relocating the planets within a sector, I don't think RebEd can do that (although I'm not sure if I tried :? ). But my plan is to edit the SYSTEM.DAT file and "move" the planets to their relative locations per the galaxy map (of course "scale" goes out the window, but generally they'll try to be in the right orientation within the sector). While editing this file I could also "change" the planet icon value to whatever's appropriate.

To do this, basically after I use RebEd to move sectors, I'll print out the sector maps (via screen dumps) and check the SYSTEM.DAT file to get their "new" X & Y locations. I'll scale the map to get an origin in the upper left hand corner. After I figure out "where" I want all the new systems to be located, I'll edit the X & Y locations in the SYSTEM.DAT file, and ... that should be that

The thing I'm going to hate is researching (probably via Wookiepedia) to determine system geography & climate to deter which planet icon to select. To save a little work, any systems that are "re-used" from the original Rebellion will probably get the same planet icon :) I don't think I really want to do an update on the Rebellion encyclopedia for the systems (as I just about NEVER use it in game myself), but if I'm researching to get info on planet icons, I might at least generate some info to have incase I ever get a wild hair to update that info :?

So, basically that's it in a nutshell. Hope that helps

  • 2 months later...

(*** double post ***) :? it's been two months

Time for an update:

Well, it's still a work-in-progress, but I have been making some progress. There are only a couple of things left: 1) selecting planet icons for systems (since the majority have been renamed) - 10% complete; 2) updating encyclopedia entries - 10% complete; 3) updating the SYSTEM.DAT file; 4) some in-game testing. At that point it should be done, it's just "shoe-horning" in the time to get it done.

All sectors have been renamed (if necessary) and relocated. All systems have been renamed. New orientation of systems in the sector is complete (at least on paper).

There is one thing I did change after I started: the Rebel Alliance now starts on Hoth instead of Yavin (renaming & relocating sectors & systems). My only question is: Are there any "easter eggs" for characters (Rebel or Imperial) on Hoth or Bespin (like when Luke is on Tatooine)? Just asking :?

As for starting on Hoth, it just seemed "odd" to me the Rebels would just be sitting around twiddling their thumbs on Yavin awaiting an Imperial attack. It's not like the "game" takes place a couple of minutes after the closing credits of ANH. I wanted something a bit different. Besides, I have other plans in the works  ....

Actually, I always felt that's exactly when the game started (well, okay, maybe like the next day or something).

Plans, eh? Intriguing...

I've been working on my own remapping. It's all on paper so far, but I've got about 3/4 of the sectors and systems worked out. I was going to wait until I had the chance to get into RebEd to see what I could do on my own (also still testing my other changes in game), but since you updated...

I wanted to ask if you could possibly please post a (fairly) detailed explanation of the steps you are using to plot new locations for systems, after the sectors have been relocated. I've worked with RebEd a lot and have general skills, but there's a lot about computers and Windows that I just don't know. Like how to do a screen capture. I'm basically a noob who happens to be pretty tenacious and obsessive, otherwise I'd have given up even trying to mod anything a long time ago.

Glad to hear that you decided to go ahead and do encyclopedeia entries and all that. I guess it just pleases me to know that there are a few out there just as obsessed as I am.

Great work, and thanks for all the help Tex.
