The new Star Wars DVDs

Lucasfilms released the original star wars trilogy on dvd for the first time. Well, ok there has been the special edition on dvd before. But this is the original trilogy whitout these cheesy digital scenes and sfx as bonus-dvds paired with the special edition.

All I can say is: don´t buy it :!:

The movies, especially the first two parts, have a bad picture-quality. Sometimes it looks like u´ve got snow on the screen. A friend of mine said, "well, these movies are old". But I got some flics from the early seventies which have a much better picture-quality and look like new releases! And the special edition was fully digitalized. So why the hack they did such a bad job on these???

So if u have the original trilogy on tape or laserdisc or whatever you really don´t have to buy the new release.

Who cares at all?!

Basically they were created from the original Laserdisc versions, those came from the 70s film reels. After so many conversions and age, it is bound to lose quality.

The special edition was digitally enhanced to the theaters. And it went through another round of digital enhancements for the DVD release.

Well, thanks for the forewarning! I guess if you ever owned unofficial pre-DVD Star Wars DVD's from the far east, which were taken from the laserdiscs, this then is what you all ready own in terms of quality.

Having just said that, i'll still probably purchase the new original DVD's just to complete the collection in terms of packaging.

What I was talking about is indeed the official release! I dont buy illegal copys!

I ask myself why they didnt just cut out the added scenes of the special edition. Than it would be the remastered original movie. Would´ve been easy and the picture quality would be much better.

Cool :), but I did, do, and will, if legal copies aren't commercially available.

I accumulated about nine pirate copies of the original trilogy before George Lucas checked his bank balance and/or bowed to public demand for official and perfectly legal DVD's, thanks to a mate who lives in Beijing, and some google result I found. In every instance the overall quality was dodgy, the menus virtually unusable, and the packaging a source of genuine mirth. But did I give I toss? Absolutly not. There was no alternative.

George Lucas was sitting on the biggest, and obviously most wanted, DVD franchise in the history of cinema, and denied the world the opportunity to purchase it legally for years, muttering bull about the films being a 'cinema experience', or whatever, despite releasing it on VHS and laser disk... err...

And when he finally released the DVDs, guess what, I went out and bought them.

I personally will stick with my original copy of the movies on VHS. That's the way it was meant to be watched. Want to hear everything better? Turn it up!

That´s a good choice Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Wot? 8O Haven´t watched the whole movie up till now. Gotta watch it later.

Arrgh, they really did. That sucks! http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5765/pukeej5.gif

And its completely unlogical!

But I´m happy that they replaced the holo-scene with the emperor in the empire strikes back. Ian McDiarmid is absolutely awesome as Palpatine.

Apropos Palpatine

Already saw that one. Maybe i shall rip my DVD and replace the really wrong bits (Han shooting second and the shost of Anakin) by bits taken from the original VHSs I have.

I was happy to hear that the Star Wars OT was being released on DVD back in 2004. The bad news was we would not get the original cuts of the movies, and those that did not like the added/altered scenes would just have to deal with it. I didn't mind this so much, however when we did finally get the DVD, Vader's lightsaber for some reason looks horrible. There's times it looks pink, washed out, and even orange. It was enough to make me say "WTF?". I'm sorry, but how do they screw that up? Were they just not paying attention?

Then, they give us this recent release on DVD, and attempt to please those fans that did not like the added/altered scenes. However, the picture quality for the original cuts leave something to be desired. Why, why, why would they choose to give the fans that? Surely, they knew the quality sucked. Why didn't they choose to take the movie from a better source than the laserdisc? What you end up with, are fans that are still not happy, and wishing they could have what they truly want.

*sigh* This is kinda how I feel:

Horse = A great majority of Star Wars fans.

Carrot = Fantastic quality of the OT DVD with and without added/altered scenes.

GL = Man dangling the carrot in front of the horse, making it walk ever further and further, but never allowing the horse to have its desired object.

Why didn't they choose to take the movie from a better source than the laserdisc?

Because they didn't really save much of the original reels from what I understand. There were few stuff from the original trilogy when it was time to make the prequels, they had to go back and use the movies as a reference to figure out how to recreate certain sets. No old plans, just figuring out how to make the Tatooine home or the Tantive set was done from the old movies.

exactly my question Def... he says "Oh, I destroyed the originals.." how much trouble did he really go through to destroy them then?.. cuz there mustve been a hell of alot sitting around.. and why oh why would you destroy that??.. its a bunch of B.S. .. he didnt destroy them after making the SE release in '99(is that the right year?) like he said.. he stored them in a vault with super laser crime deterrent technology so noone.. including him.. could ever get to them again..
This is from the last release.. its sped up at the beginning for some reason.. and it mellows out.. but listen to what hamill says about G.L. ... that explains everything.. Edited by JediHunter

lol.. that thing hamill says about Boba Fett is really something...

And that really does say something about GL.

nice find JH

I can't believe that that's Mark Hamill though... He has definatly lost that boyish charm he had in the OT (even though 25 years or so has passed) ...
