It's not according to the research order, because the AI builds scads of Bulk Transports all through the game.

My guess is it's hardcoded into the game to build --% Heavy Cap Ships, --% Transports, and --% Starfighters. Then it keeps up with how many of each it has built and builds what is lacking when it has the resources. This is entirely a theory, I've never seen anything on this...but it would explain why there are so few Heavy Cap Ships built and so many of those crappy transports!

The A1 tends to build a lot of fishboats as well (Mon Cal's) but has anyone ever seen it build the later ships? I have never seen a Bulwark or any of the higher line ships. Of course I'm usually crushing them by the time I get SSD's so maybe they don't have enough maintenance points left. I would like some fleet battles where I could get hurt.-GM Conway

I dunno for caps, but I once found a way to influence the building of fighters: the AI only seems to build the fighters with the biggest detection rate, that's why you end up fighting A-Wings and Tie Defenders late in the game. If you level out the detection value for all fighters, then you'll encounter different types as well.

In me current game I encounter mostly A- and B-Wings, some X-Wings as well.

Maybe the rules for caps are the same or also based on one certain value of its RebEd card ?

It must be a different value for different types of items. Detection could be important for fighters, but it seems detection isn't very important for troops (otherwise you'd only see Sulustan troops). This isn't the case, as you see tons of Wookies at end-game. Could be attack value for troops...but that makes you wonder what cap ships use. Hmmm... :?

Well it's surely something Dreadnoughts have, I get tons of 'em incoming

Also something the Dark Troopers and the Wookiees have in common.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I play Imp, I see lots and lots of Mon Cals and Wooks. When I play Rebel I see Dark troopers and lots of War Droids, even for garrison duties.

I do see lots of Nebs and Star Galleons....

Yeah, slightly odd choice, but hey.

Um, why do people call it A1, I always thought it was AI?

Don't know Elvis, for me it always was AI not A1.

Anyway the AI does make weird choices, lots of Star Galleons, and lot sof lancers, and lots and lots of TIE Fighters, and then Defenders. When I'm Imp I usually only build TIE/Ints.

I think I know, why the AI has Wooks and War droids for garrison duty: after a planetary assault with these troops, the AI usually just keeps them in the place and doesn't bother to replace them with units better suited to garrisons. If units are build on purpose, then it's usually the MonCals for instance.

I think the Mask has cracked it. Refering to games i've played, that rule seems to fit with what's happened. :)

I have no idea how the AI decides which ships to build, but that is the funniest thing that I've seen all day, Thank you. :D

The AI does more than just build according to research order. I don't know how it is for ships, but consider the following automatic garrisoning for the Alliance (i.e., you let C3PO take care of it):

    - The research order for troops is:
      1. Mon Calamari Regiment
      2. Sullustan Regiment
      3. Wookiee Regiment

    - As soon as the Mon Calamari regiment is available, the AI switches to this regiment because it has the highest defense value.

    - If you have a planet that is in uprising, the AI will switch to Sullustan regiment, because there is a need for troop presence, not defense strength (plus they're created faster and cheaper)

    - The AI never builds a Wookiee Regiment, because it only builds garrisons, i.e., defensive troops.

So, we see the AI 'deciding' what to build on three criteria:

    1. What its designation is: whether or not a unit is defensive or not
    2. What its level is: how high its defensive capabilities are
    3. What their function is: defense or subdue uprising

With regard to ships computer opponent ships, I would think it's the same. Moreover, I would imagine that the opponent AI does select ships on their offensive capabilities.

Somewhere pucho suggested that the weapon reacharge was one of the factors that influeced decision making for th AI.

Detection rating probably has influence on that as well.

And of course price and shielding....
