The tactical game starfield.

Can the starfield in the tactical game be replaced? The stars are...a little boring and one dimensional. Anybody got any idea? I'm NOT thinking of anything as dramatic as for example Homeworld's backdrop, but perhaps the odd dash of nebula here, a few coloured suns there, perhaps a swirl of galaxy there.... I think it would add a subtle touch of ambiance to the tactical game.

Hmm, i should imagine so, if you had the right graphics tools. It's only a background isn't it? So as long as it's not to thick with detail or too bright, it should be ok. I think. :)

Elvismiggell. Strike me down and i will become more powerful than you can ever imagine...

The tactical background picture is entry 5030 of the 303 group in the Tactical.dll.

It is a 440 x 438 bitmap with the full regular tactical palette. The game will resize the picture if neccesary and it has a large empty circle to not to disturb the battle. You can replace it, but since this is the only background, any picture will be boring after a while. :)

AGHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...............ok, I tried replacing Tactical.dll, entry 5030 pf the 303 group with a rather beautiful starfield I found on NASA's site (I converted it to a Bitmap), and....it didn't work....damn. When replacing it with Resource Hacker it didn't let me rename it though. Help! Anyone got any ideas? I think the idea to replace the starfield in the tactical game is a realy good one....lets put our our heads togetyher chaps!

I certain that once this image kindly borrowed from spaceflight.com's extensive archive is here for all to see, everyone will go, 'why didn't we all think about this yonks ago!'

We didn't have any computers at school when I was a kid....

You mean here, to da forum?

You must upload the image to a page. You should have a homepage for that. Then simply put the link of the pic int this text box, where you're writing the post. Mark that line (the link), and press the Img button. I think it should work..

U can easely create a homepage. There are lot of free servers. I have searched some pages for you. Try these:

http://www.brinkster.com/ ( no adds, 30Mb capacity)

http://www.tbns.net/signup.shtml ( no adds, 20Mb capacity)

http://www.domaindlx.com/ (pop-ups 100Mb capacity)

Gosh! I'm genuinely quite flattered! Respect! I'll look into this tomorrow, despite the fact Arsenal are playing Birmigham on the TV, which means i'll be forced to go to the pub, and subsequently probably be pissed out my mind by the time I get back home and decide what a good idea it will be to turn on the computer and attempt advanced things like creating a web-site, or...(more usually)...tweaking my settings to the extent a) I wont remember what i've done, and b) it will be pointless knowing what i've done, because it will be completely unsalvagable.... given this, it's possible we might not speak for a while....

..certainly do at the moment...with half the French national side helping us along...I sometimes find myself shouting in French...'Viva la Arsenal!'

Moving back to the question in hand, i've tried to replace the tactical game starfield with a reasonably simple starfield picture I downloaded from NASA's picture archive at spaceflight.com, and it didn't work...damn!

Despite there only being a trickle of apparent interest form others. I think i'm really onto something here. It would be seriously cool to our tactical battles against the backdrop of a more colourful/detailed starfield.

An example of what i'm ranting about would be foud here:

...if I knew how the hell to post an example. If one of you guys would be kind enough to do it for me, i'll email the picture to you, you post it, and hay presto; everyone goes; 'Heck, that's one hell of a darn fine idea, why didn't we think about this years ago?' And one of the more active brains among us does it, reports it works fine and how much better seeing a Star Destroyer take out a Corellion Corvette against the new starfield is, and tells the rest of us how to do it....(collapses to the floor catching breath back...)

Jahled... I really like the pic you are using as avater, but with my phone line connection and bad internetcomputer it is horrible to load! Can't you change it in to something more simple?

...oops! Gosh, the thought it might be slowing other people's speed down never occured to me. If it's shagging other people's connection speed, I am truely sorry. I did it at work, and when I got home checked it to see if it worked and if it had any effect on overall performance. I didn't. With all respect dude, i'm not entirely certain it's the reason for your computer's performance. I'll hang on just to see if I get any other comments before removing it, unless requested to do so by the swrebellion staff.

If I do i'll remove it immediately and apologize.

Just double check your connection-speed, though, and let me know..

Heck, I almost feel like Needa...

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok...i've been playing around with THE FEW suggestions on replacing the tactical battlefield starfield and predictably am getting absolutely nowhere. Ok, so we've established the file is in the Tactical.dll folder, 5030 of the 303 group, and our target is a 440 x 438 bitmap. I replaced it with a starfield and boom-yacka..the game crashes! Golly, i'm not surprised, there never seems to be an easy option in anything I set my sites on. Anyway, when I replaced the file, all the wierd letters and numbers were replaced by the starfield image i'm trying to use. Instantly didn't look right. Is the starfield image in some kind of language?

Help!

Jahled - did you use vakundok's utility to convert the bitmap to Rebellion's wack format first, and then make that converted file your replacement resource when you used Hacker?

I think you have to do that conversion on any bitmap image that you want to put into the tactical dll 303 type resources. At least I think that's the case...

I definately think we have to lose the big blue square or make it very, very bigger. Also a good idea would be able to run attacks on shipyards during a battle and also be able to time other fleets entering a battle half way through. Like an ambush.

Blast! I downloaded Vakundok's utility over the weekend, and guess what...the readme was gibberish! Hay, there's something new. I guess me and computers just weren't destined to get along...my nerdy dream of a more exciting tactical game starfield is never going to happen...no one else is interested...no one else cares....i'm all alone...:cry::cry:

Did you run the program ? It's pretty self-explaining. I think option 3 is for converting BMP-BIN. If your starfield has the right dimensions an color palette, that should be it.
