Which part of it?

Model wise was easy, just tiresome. The new fabric look was easy, just processor hungry.

 

For the model, I created a spline helix and then duplicated it and lowered its possition. Then, to be able to apply a surface modifier, I had to link up every node/vertex in the spline - which is the tiresome part. From that, I cloned it again and scaled it inwards to give it depth and then linked them up again. I think I had to create about 800+ extra splines by hand to link it all together. Took over an hour to do it, but came out alright. After that, I cloned it 2 more times and moved one down a bit, and rotated the other. I could have/should have then modified the spline to get the tips to work right, but I just used a boolean modifier to "chop" off the bits that were hanging out.

Underneath it all, is an odd shaped cylinder with a wooden material.

The fabric was quiet easy, I used a displacement map (a specle map with the colours inverted) on the hilt, and mental ray which does it's displacement maps very differently to the default scanline renderer in Max.

Max displaces the vertexs with the displacement maps and they don't seem to always work (if the surface is rounded, it will - it's highly dependant on the number of vertexs in use as well as the normals), whereas Mental Ray calculates it's maps and creates it's displacement in the same form of a bump map - though as you can see it extrudes the bumps

Hmm, well I've been working on it a little bit, though after getting started on some of the Rebellion models I kind of forgot

So, I'll try to work on it again . . . I think last time I got stumped on the ship's aft and just how exactly it went together. Still, I'll give it a whirl

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm not the best (ok, I lied - I'm pretty dismal, and Scath can correct my spelling here) at materials. I could have done it extremely reflective and chrome like, though I thought that looked pretty bad and was going for a dull metal look (which didn't really work either).

EDIT: I dug up what I've done on your ship Fishy, the body is getting there - though it lacks detail at the moment, and is far from finished. I think I might need some schematical drawings to finish it off - mainly for the aft and underbelly of the ship.

Wow Krytos, that's looking very nice already!

 

I think right now the front portion looks a bit short, and the upper part of it too small compared to the lower one.

 

I've dug up two more sketches that might help you to get a grasp on how the rear looks.

Note that I haven't made many sketches yet, and I'm not completely familiar with her shape, also the design still evolves from sketch to sketch, so there might be contradictions.

So just go with the version that looks best

 

I'll try to come up with some more precise isometrical views, and maybe some detail shots.

I stopped drawing in PS since starting up modelling, but have taken back to it a bit with texturing and when I borrowed a Wacom Tablet (must buy one of them soon!)

I use to do a ton of image editing - from making backdrop collages to editing my friends images to "pretty" them up. My year 11 teacher thought I should apply for a job at some magazine company. If you've got any descent photoshop skill - you can always try that.

I just started sketching it on 16 Dec. My abilities are limited to 2D. I've gotten pretty good at top-view 2D X-Wings. I made it up Krytos. Any similarity is do to the popularity of Mon Cal engineering.

Krytos, what kind of vehicle is that? It looks neat, just my brain cant lock it into a recognisable configuration.

I wasn't implying you copied the idea or anything Mitth, I just was wondering if someone had already made a 3d model of it - that's all. The one I'm thinking of just looks simular anywho (I've had a search on the 'net and can't find the pic anymore - I'll have to try my other computer sometime).

 

@Mad: They're pretty much those large pads with wireless pens that you can draw with rather than a mouse. In essence it's like drawing on something and inputing it straight into the computer.

Nice thing Mitth. May i suggest using a ruler so as to not have the skaky sides. Always looks nicer if you are working on technical drawings.

Basic Interceptor. Tie Hunter which I saw somewhere.

My Gauntlet which I finally got arround to working on in AutoCAD.

I thought the Tie Hunter was neat so I used an S-foil system like what's on the Skipray blastboat for a Tie craft. Roughly analogus to a Tie Avenger or Chiss clawcraft. Somewhere in between anyways.

 

I always wanted to take the Tie Raptor and make it, I dunno, cooler. The forward view of the Vengeance in attack mode is about the same of what I had in mind.
