Wow, it seems you all have been busy bees, discussing and staying on topic while I was away, nice work. After reading the above posts, I am a bit lost on one key note, are you all debating whether Darth Maul's ship could have possesed a cloaking device? Or are you just talking about the mentioings of of the device throughout Star Wars history?

Well we started off talking about darth maul's ship. Started axing one the cloaking system and than started talking about cloaking shields all together.

The Empire did have cloaking technology at least according to the article on the Grand Admirals that appeared in Star Wars Insider. Grand Admiral Martio Batch developed the Phantom fighters. However the rebel scum destroyed the project base and Batch was assasinated by his angry troops. The cloacking device Thrawn found at Mount Tantiss must have been based on different technology. -Grand Moff Conway

That is a possibility. Since the entire research facility including the SSD which was protecting it was destroyed it is probable thjat the mont Tantiss was a different model.

The cloaking model at Mount Tantis must have been a different design than that used on the Phantom. What use would a cloaking device do on a fighter if the pilot is blinded?

And apparently the Tantiss one was incapable of masking the ionique emissions of the engins which meant that it greatly limited its use. Unlike the RAII one. But the mont Tantiss one was cappable of maintainig the shield will the ship opened fire. My guess is that the fighter model used the energy of the lasers while they weren't in use. That is why when the fighter opened fire it would lose its cloak.
