Struck by inspiration: ST TC

Recommended Posts

I was reading about Cain's plans to create a SW vs. ST TC and thought 'Wow, that sounds great, I wonder how far that's possible'. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more problems I saw. What about balancing? Who would side with whom? How fast would the ships involved move? Who would be the characters for either side? and so on.

So why not take this one step further? Why not make a ST only mod? Sure, this would not be without problems either. First of all, Rebellion is a SW game. All of the UI would have to be changed. Cutscenes are impossible to change, which is especially bad. Ships would be limited to pulse type weapons (but tactical combat always had it's problems).

Still, I'd like to attempt this, I would like to try and make a Star Trek mod.

I already have lots of ideas concerning this.

1) Setting

This TC would be set in the ST: TMP era, meaning in between the first and the first few scenes of the seventh movie. Good thing about this is a lot of models could be, umm, borrowed from Starfleet Command. The parties involved would be the Federation (obviously) and the Klingons. The 'galaxy' would be reduced to a few sectors on the borders of these two galactic superpowers.

2) Characters

Needs more ideas, but characters for the Feds would probably include the whole Enterprise bridge, Admiral Hayes and some others (minor characters should be available in sufficient numbers), Klingons would include Chancellor Gorkon, maybe, as well as his daughter Azet'bur, General Chang, Brigadeer Kurla, Captains Klaa and Kruge and some others (getting enough minors could be difficult here)

3) Ships

Feds: One or two troop transports, Oberth-class survey ship, Okinawa-class frigate, Akula-class destroyer, Miranda-class medium cruiser, Constitution-class heavy cruiser, Constitution-refit heavy cruiser, Excelsior-class heavy cruiser, Excelsior-refit class heavy cruiser (Enterprise-B), Soyuz-class support cruiser, Ark Royal-class carrier, Ulysses-class dreadnought, Ares-class battleship, and maybe the famous federation stardock

Klinks: Bird-of-prey, F5 destroyer, D5 light cruiser, D7 heavy cruiser, K'T'Inga-class command cruiser, C8 dreadnought, C8V carrier, B10 Battleship and a few additional ones.

3a) Models

I'm gonna need help on those, but with SFC models convertable to .x, there should be little problems regarding them

3b) Fighters

SFC features a variety of fighters (if only with one model per race) and those could be used in reb as well.

4) Troops and special units

coming soon

5) Interface

I'd give it a try to completely replace the existing interface with a Star Trek themed one, one for each race. I know how they should look and sound like and with a little work and help I might be able to reproduce it.

I'd even replace IMP/SD-7 and 3PO/R2 with less advanced, more fitting interface graphics. Federation computer voice samples are easy to find on the internet, klingon might be a bit more difficult.

Well, folks, it's 4:30 AM so please tell me: Did what I just wrote make any sense? Could I really make this mod? If I tried, would you help me? If you'd like to help me, what could you help me with? Or is there the famous one thing I overlooked that renders this project utterly doomed?

Awaiting your replies and wishing you a good night is

Admiral Fishface

Your project could be interessting even if I sense a few problems:

1. I understand you have a deep knowledge of ST which is a good thing. But I do not know about the rest of us(I sure don't).

2. The fact that we would have to change half of the interface makes it rather complicated.

3. Are you sure we have all the models needed?

And a last question: When do we start? :D

1. I do have the knowledge, and what I don't know can easily be found somewhere on the internet. I don't know about the rest of us, either, that's why I posted this and am now waiting for feedback, to see if there was anyone interested.

2. Yes, and I have even made out a few problems regarding interface used by both sides. So that's that for a completely different interface for either side. This would probably also be one of the most time-consuming parts of creating the mod. But I have nothing better to do in the next three months anyway.

3. No. Actually, for now, we (at least I) don't have any models. One of the challenges will be to find them.

As for the last one:

Whenever you're ready! :D

Built this today, going to try texturing now.

Thanks to Mask for the great tutorial.

EDIT: Made a texture test to see how texturing works, gonna start again tomorrow for a better version.

Thats 3D modeling? wow..... i learned how to do stuff like that in highschool.

Gotta love AutoCad,

You could say the easy part of creating models is the model its self. The hard part is creating textures that work and look good. I've noticed that a lot of the model replacements for Rebellion look nice when you download them, but in game the textures are distorted due to the limited colour pallet.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Just a tip, Mask's uses some of the SW models from a Star Trek Armada II mod.

Perhaps you can use the models from the original game, so you don't have to make them all. :D

 I didn't read all the thread yet but I know that Mask said and converted me a model from the Star Trek Starfleet Command I for rebelliuon use ...so it is quite simple and possible . The rest is child work ... I mean cards and characters :)

 btw all that ST models are fully textured with low graphic textures and they have also low polycount (or something)....converting the textures to rebellion pallete is quite easy also :)

That would be a great help; Being able to use Armada and SFC models would GREATLY reduce the amount of work needed for this (even more so as I own both of the games and even have a number of player-made models).

How is it done?

 Yeah what I was sayng Admiral :) the models are there in separate files and named as the ship and with the textures next to it ...one normal one damaged ...here is Mask's email back to me :

Hi Cain,

SC> Well I fint Star Treak Starfleet command again and to my surprise

all the

SC> models are Rebellion size ....and very low textured and stuff. I

don't

SC> have the ability to transform them in a .x file

SC> but I desire that you will take a look at the file that I'm sending

you

SC> and tell me if is good for ....rebellion use.

SC> If so it will be great I have fed, romulans, klingons ...etc ....I

think

SC> we can make like 6 new TC's ...we will see ..anyway it will give a

new

SC> meaning to the SW vs ST title :)

well I also have SFC 1, so you could've asked, before sending me such

a large file. I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to convert all the

sdc models for you, but at least I can show you how to do it:

If you don't already have, download Milkshape3D and the Milkshape

import plugins at http://www.assimsoft.com, then you'll be able to import the

.mod files. Resizing the textures and converting the model into

Rebellion's format works exactly, like I describe in my modelling

tutorial 2.0, so if you have either 3DSMax or Gmax and LithUnwrap, it

should be no problem, to do that with a little time.

As I said, I don't have the time for this, since I'm writing exams all

over this month. The only thing I can do is release some previously

arranged things, so that nobody will notice my absence ;)

Ps: I've included a sample of a converted .mod file, it works with the

textures, that you sent me. The second model, with the broken

Enterprise couldn't be imported, since Milkshape always crashed

with it.

If I try and click "View Image" it just takes me to what I'm assuming is a German MSN group, probably where you're hosting them. the problem might be in my browser. I'm using FireFox, not IE(IE got hijacked by the about:blank thing before so I avoid using it now that i've re-formatted).
