The Day After Tomorrow

Have you seen it? If so, what did you think?

I personnally thought it was brilliant in the graphical sense of the word. Yet, there's someting I've often wondered about and which this movie didn't address...

If large parts of our world were to be deserted or become uninhabitable, wouldn't this lead to some other disiasters as well? For example, just think of unattended nuclear powerplants, industrial and chemical plants or other potentially dangerous stuff that needs constant attention and monitoring...

I think it is a very unrealistic scenario. You have the scentific community bauling over it.

Another scare tactic the extreme environmentalists will use to further their cause.

Haven't seen the movie, but the special effects do look quite good.

I remember listening to an article on Radio 4 (yes Jahled i'm that sad) about it where they were saying that they were quite aware it wasn't realistic, much like pretty much every other film. Ever.

Well, I must admit that I always consider this kind of movie as entertainment. On the other hand, I like the what-if way in which things are visualised.

BTW, did they say why it wasn't realistic?

The special effects are impressive, but the movei was, as usual, to US-centristic, they could have at least showed what happened to the other countries.

It is too unrealistic, an Ice Age doesn't start in just a few days. As for your first question, the nuclear plants may have been shut down during whatever evacuation procedures you had, and the cold would have paralyzed it completely. Industrial and an chemical just as well most likely.

As for the scientific community bauling over it, well it's just a movie.

I know, I know... But with regards to all those so-called experts... we really should have to admit that we don't really know how fast this kind of thing could happen, now do we...

It's very unlikely that it would happen over the period of a few days.

Whilst a catastrophic event could in theory cause an ice age in a matter of weeks, it's much more likely to be a long term degredation into one.

Ehich is something we believe because we tend to deduct this from indirect indications... I mean, do you know someone who's actually witnessed one?

Well, in the last star system I visited a while ago...

The movie argues the glaciation as the result of the "death" of the NA-current, an event of that scale wouldn't happen in matter of days, and not without repercusions in all the other currents of the world.

Yes, but the movie doensn't say it leaves the other currents unaffected, does it? Furthermore, we think that such a thing can't happen in a few days although in reality, we don't know for sure...

Well, I didn't like what this would make of my retirement retreat

Haven't seen it so far, but if it has the same good impact as 'wargames', then I'm all ears

Sad! Good lord no! :o Intelligent radio attracts intelligent people and subsequently stimulates intelligent minds!

As for the film; I haven't seen it, have read dubious reports about the film's subject matter, but have been awed, as per normal, by the special effects i've been exposed to...

As for the subject matter, I personally wouldn't describe myself as an envirnmental-extremist as E so carefully deployed the word; but I am concerned about our beautiful little world God was kind enough to grant us, and read not so long ago that the Bush-administration still doesn't consider 'global-warming,' as something effecting the planet. This was in an article in the Independant about how the Pentagon does... and is trying to influence the Whitehouse to prick it's eyes and ears up to the fact conflicts in the near future are likely to be fought for primordial reasons; water, fertile land etc... as a direct consequence of global warming...

The film seems to be a tab over-dramatic in this vein, however...

As a recent Vent said, "The Day After Tomorrow has as much to do about global warming as Independence Day does about illegal immigration." :)

A friend of mine says that the icecaps are melting so fast that in 75 years nobody will have to worry about anything anymore.

I have also heared that sometime soon there is going to be another polarity reversal in the earths gravity field. It happens once every so many million years, and we are due for another one.

Then again, I believe that whatever comes our way, our people will adapt to whatever threat comes our way and grow stronger becomes of it. Maybe a real imminent global distaster might bring people closer together somehow and look past their differences.

The future could indeed be very scary. Unfortunately the facts concerning the effects of global-warming are, as always, obscured behind the deluge of 'the world-is-about-to-end,' information thrown at us by the environmental loby, and the other extreme; those board-members of the executive table responding to their share-holder's interests, and ignoring the obvious dark clouds gathering on the horizon, for profit and our pension schemes.

As Evaders pointed out, the film is as realistic a reflection of the effects of global warming as is an alien invasion is to immigration...

Edit: Try and make sense I must!

You watched way too much X-Files episodes, Darky, the Mayans were pretty smart, but they couldn't have forseen the 11th Anniversary of Mask's page... :P

Much less the quasi-cataclismic festivities organized by Mask for such an occasion.

I saw it on the history channel not the X-files :P
History Channel, Animal Channel, Discovery Channel... All nice when it comes to petty science but don't take their broadcasts as factual, hard science, dude!
