Running Rebellion on modern Windows
Star Wars: Rebellion came out in 1998 and needs some help to run well on current versions of Windows. The easiest route is the Star Wars: Rebellion Community Fix (v2.63.1.0), with patches by TruthRealm and an installer by Stratus.
What the fix changes
The installer replaces four game files with community-fixed versions:
DDraw.dll: DirectDraw compatibilityd3drm.dll: Direct3D retained modeD3Dlmm.dll: DirectX compatibilityREBEXE.exe: an updated v1.02 game executable
It also sets Windows XP compatibility mode, adds the -w flag to the game shortcut, and can optionally remove the introduction briefing files.
Installing
- Download the fix from the SWR downloads and extract all files to a folder.
- Run
Star_Wars_Rebellion_Community_Fix_Installer.exe. - Click Auto-Detect to find the game, or Browse to pick its folder. It looks in the usual GOG, Steam and original install folders.
- Choose any options, then click Install Community Fix.
The installer makes a timestamped backup of the original files first, checks disk space and permissions, and won't patch while the game is running. Games installed under Program Files need administrator rights. To undo the fix, run the installer with --uninstall to restore the backup.
Command-line options
--silent: install with default settings, no window--path "C:\Games\Star Wars Rebellion": set the game folder--nobriefing: remove the introduction briefing files--nobackup: skip the backup (not recommended)--uninstall: restore the game from the backup
Troubleshooting
- If installation fails, check
rebellion_fix_install.log. - For multiplayer, open TCP and UDP ports 2300-2400 in your firewall.
- Steam can overwrite the patched files when it verifies the game. If that happens, run the installer again.
