website contest in greater chicago[advice plz?]

Featured Replies

Hey guys, there's a website contest in the Greater Chicago area. If you live there, you might've heard about it (but I hope not , for my sake :D).

Anyways, I'll get to it right away... the website contest is for high school students, so you might expect a lot of people to be participating. I was thinking of joining, and although my chances of winning are pretty low I will at least get some experience out of it :).

Basically you get to make your own website about anything you want, and it's judged by the following criteria:

Content

Structure and Navigation

Visual Design

Functionality

Success

Yes, the last part is stupid.. how do they expect someone to get a popular website running in just a month (because the deadline is June 22, 2003).

Now, I would really like if someone could help me think of what to write a website about.. what is popular nowadays that I could possibly know a lot about, something that will draw my visitors back for more? I'm thinking it needs news and a forum.. but what should the main topic of the site be?

As for the 'success', I was thinking to pull a few strings here and there, see if my connections can get my site advertised on theirs

Any comment and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Igor, i'm a bit short of ideas on any serious content/subject matter kind of thing, but if you need wacky images/gifs feel free to take what you want from any of my five msn passports for reliable hosting:

-You could create an entire website from this lot!

Use what you want, and good luck my friend! :)

Thanks! :)

Personally, I am having the most trouble of thinking up of the content... I just don't know what to base my site about.

Sure, there's Star Wars, Counter-strike, or a whole bunch of other PC Games.. but would that really attract a lot of audience and have me actually stand a chance of winning this thing? :?

Any comments.. please :)

Um, this might be a silly question, but don't you own SWRebellion.com ???

Elvismiggell. Strike me down and i will become more powerful than you can ever imagine...

Not gone, merely marching far away

You know, that's funny, because I do

The only problem with that is we are using a bunch of freeware that we didn't really code.. php-nuke, phpBB2... :(

That is why I don't think that would slide over very well with the judges (if that's allowed at all).

couldn't you try to make SWRebellion in another language?? like HTML or some other? (crap can't remember any other homepage languages now  )

All webpages are coded in HTML. What produces the HTML is normally another scripting language - PHP, ASP, CF, etc. If you've ever read the history article, the first page of links (mine) along with the first version of SWR by Eville Jedi were HTML only. Finally, we found SSI easier to use to create a frameless and easy to update site. Next came some ASP before finally working it into PHP, which is even better.

So is the HTML in Microsoft frontpage one of those or is it just HTML?! (which was what I meant, make the page in the same language as Frontpage uses)

Frontpage is mainly designed to create HTML using a graphical system... ala WYSIWYG.
