Well, were I learned German I only had this explanation for "etwas zum Besten geben" : someone is entertaining his audience with a story. This would apply to a storyteller as well as to a comedian. Basically it's just someone standing before a crowd, telling them somehing.

Ahhhh! You see, we know that in Dutch as well: "iets ten beste geven". This indeed means to recite.
