  1. Ahhh...so that's why leaving the resolution window open works for some games. Cheers Master Xan. I've now successfully tried a VM (VirtualBox running XP sp2) to play Rebellion on and feel I can give a beginner's appraisal of the pros and cons for Virtual box as opposed to the Refreshed+Reloaded files. Pros: You know the game will install itself, patch easily and run on windows XP and previous versions, so minimal, if any, tinkering required. You can dynamically change the size of the window the VM is in (I find playing in 'windowed mode' without a VM is way too small and standard full screen stupidly large - especially on my widescreen monitor ) You can multi-task without the game auto pausing (good for multiplayer) Multiplayer games seem more stable/less prone to crashing Cons: You need an old version of windows to install on the VM You need GB's of disk space to accommodate the guest OS (it wanted 10GB for my XP) First time set up of a VM takes quite some time to install windows & some tinkering (there are a plethora of settings for the VM but I only needed to adjust 2: in 'Storage' add 'Host drive E' & in 'Network' select attached to: 'Bridged Adapter' -Big Up to Budious for that one! Cheers ) If intending mutliplayer internet access is required which can be a pain (I've been unable to update XP+internet explorer and wasn't able to install microsoft security essentials so am a bit concerned my VM is wide open to attack and how that might relate to my pc - any advice here would be much appreciated. I should note that once I got gameranger installed I haven't had any internet issues with actually playing the game - just browsing the internet) All in all I found using the refreshed & reloaded files quicker but slightly more involved technically. I do bemoan the loss of 10GB but... am I going to get rid of it?... No chance - I much prefer playing it on the VM but will keep both versions so as to be able to play more people multiplayer To get the game to run on my wiin7 pro 64 system I followed the following steps: Create new game folder: C/Program Files(x86)/LucasArts/Star Wars Rebellion. Copy the entire contents of the game CD to that folder. From the Refreshed & Reloaded files: copy in the d3drm file; replace the REBEXE.exe file with the one in the rebellion folder; use the Rebellion x64 registry file (right click merge). Disable graphics card and restart pc - Game Ready! The Rebed in the files works fine so long as you have the vcl30 file (which is in the download) Battle graphics are slightly jerky around fighter movements but nothing I can't live with
  2. @ budious - thanks for the download mirror: I hadn't seen that when I edited my post above. Also you make a good case for the VM - I'm gonna have to try one (last time I did I couldn't get it to connect the internet but sounds like things have got better since and that was at least a few years ago that I tried) @master xan - cheers for the post above, you've very well encapsulated the main suggestion on the link I posted. The other (for anyone having display issues on old games) was to simply leave the change resolution window open when starting an older game (sounds crazy I know but enough people have said it works to try it). Also anyone like me who has an AMD graphics card might want to try disabling it worked for me!
  3. If you're looking for multiplayer - download GameRanger - it's a free game matcher with many people still playing rebellion. An absolute must in my opinion P.S. - I won't get bored.
  4. You are the same budious! (REF post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=28312&p=550416#p550416) Sorry, if I'd thought to look a little deeper, I could have found that out without asking the question. It's an absolute pleasure - I'm eternally grateful for the files in the first place - to think I can continue to have this game to play for at least another 5 years makes me unreasonably happy and it's all due to those files. Huge thanks to you and any who helped create them! And if I can help others get it working then I figure I'll have that many more people to play against multiplayer
  5. Cheers budious, good to know for future reference. Potentially though, sounds like that could be as technically taxing as making it work on win7 using the refreshed & reloaded package?
  6. @budious - Does a VM allow multiplayer over the internet? With GameRanger for example? I got it working on my win7 64 using the refreshed and reloaded x86/x64 package (Are you the same Budious who created that?) Personally I didn't think the steps to do that were overly taxing from a technical viewpoint (just copy all the CD files, add the d3drm file, replace the exe file, use the registry merge file and away you go) but that's only my opinion.
  7. Are you using the same updated versions of Rebed that are in the link I posted above? Afraid that's the last suggestion I have I have a win7 64 system and they work on here but also think they have a couple of extra files in them - try them is all I can suggest

  9. I've never heard of that! That's a record if ever there was! - Didn't even think it could happen. Couple of questions: 1. Have they been left on planets with more enemy popular support than your own? 2. What system specs are you running it on? (just wondering if a 64bit system might possibly mess it up?)

  11. Scratch what I said - I got it working finally with win7 64...the hurdle all along was my AMD graphics card, of all things disabling it sorted out the colours straight away! Hi All, After a couple of weeks away and many emails requesting these files, I've put them on a filedropper download (many thanks to the person who suggested it - my apologies I've forgotten your name already): http://www.filedropper.com/rebrefreshpackagebeta12withvcl30addedbyant as you may note I've found and added the file vcl30.dpl to the rebed folders (finally figured out what that was - makes rebed work on 64 systems...I think ) If for any reason the download isn't working, email me at addict-ant@outlook.com and I'll see what I can do. P.S. I've just got a windows 7 professional 64 system and whilst rebellion runs, the colours are all messed up (almost looks like it's running in 256 colour but not quite). I've tried all the compatibility settings and checking up to date graphics drivers etc but to no avail - if anyone has any suggestions I'd be eternally grateful.   14. You, Evaders... (anyone really). Ummm....... I don't wish to contradict you oh wise master....but... ...I think you're wrong about the time changing thing in multiplayer... ...or at least in every SWR game I've played, the game has gone at the slowest speed either player has set it to... or am I alone in experiencing that?

Yes, definitely good luck with the job hunting - it can be damn tough out there for employment but it's a necessary evil Though from the sounds of it you both have education on your side so hopefully that should bear some fruit - I will keep my fingers crossed. Tex - I just realised: haha - you want rain... come to the UK! - it's always bloody raining over here! So much so, flash flooding's becoming a real issue in some areas. (yet somehow we still have hose pipe bans almost every summer - what the hell is that about?!?) - in fact our summer has only just got started - and we're not expecting it to hang around long (a month maybe...possibly two...if we're lucky). Then it'll be back to cloudy, windy and rainy...
  16. Good thinking Tex. Of course the best way around all of this (in my humble opinion)... is to play it multiplayer! Which, if you should ever desire to do so, please do look me up on Gameranger... or on Hamachi... or you could email me...PM me... or just shout loudly from the rooftop - I'll be there like a shot!
  17. Whilst I certainly have to agree it is clunky - I really don't mind it at all and for me it doesn't detract very much from my enjoyment of the game. I'm also fairly content with the speed options - though that's probably got more to do with the fact I lean far more towards turn based strategy than real time strategy. It's always been one of the things I liked about SWR - felt to me like a hybrid of turn based and real time combined. Just out of interest, do you generally go for real time or turn based strategy games?

I think those are some solid ideas to help redress the balance and thinking about it, I've done similar before i.e. at the start determined not to use interdictors and ended up using them far too soon I salute your willingness to get a decent game out of the AI! I too often find myself exasperated by it and really only find a good game playing empire on hard...and even then it's only a challenge until you clear Sesswena sector. Still let me know how you get on - be interested to hear
  19. Couple of suggestions: 1. Planetary guns! The more - the merrier! A gun is worth more than a shield, imo. 2. Don't hold troops on planets with weak defences - it's their destruction that's causing the loss of popular support.

Hi there, Troops with a general - preferably at least 6 troops in my experience though 3 may do for a while and 1 or 2 is better than nothing but that may only increase the risk you'll foil the mission, they'll find out who's there general-wise and then come back with an abduction squad (and with only a couple of troops may get through). Fleet with an admiral (even better with commander+fighters and/or general+troops). Self espionage backed up with sabotage/abduction resources (quite difficult against sabotages though as they're not there for long but you can get lucky). However, at very early game difficult to have these resources available (making obtaining them an early goal ). Also depends on where they're coming from (assuming you know that or can figure that that out ): Planet - could blockade it with fleet+admiral (at least, commander+general even better. Make sure they aren't there when you do it if you're fleet's a little on the weak side - perhaps wait for a successful sabotage against you, then nip in quick). Ship in sector - try to chase the fleet out the sector (many like to park ships in neutral systems close by - good idea to patrol neutral systems and use cancelled espionage missions to detect incoming fleets) Ship in orbit (blockading) - counter sabotage missions against the ship (meaning you want sabotage units on most planets) Cant think of anything else at the moment - will post if I do

I've never even thought of doing that - good idea though However I do foresee an awful lot of chasing down and almost never actually fighting...until such time as the ai thinks it can beat you of course (which if it thinks it can it usually does - but not always and their's always the fighter trick to fall back on ) Might I suggest just not building/using them rather than removing them altogether? Just seems simpler to my mind and that way you can always change your mind mid-game. P.S. like your post: always considered doing just that but never got round to it, interesting to know its effects cheers
