  1. I was thinking about what to name my newest batch of four Nebula-B Frigates the other day when I came upon an idea. Why not name ships after members of the forum here? Lets see... Jahled can be the special forces Mon Cal cruiser I built for my jedi to wander the galaxy in (Jahled is a Jedi Knight after all), Evader would make for a perfect Imperial escort carrier with that avatar of his, and I'm going to mark Tofu down as being a Corellian Gunship for his personality. Myself, I of course get to be a CC9600 Frigate. That's got to be the weirdest looking thing I've ever seen, and so it fits my personality quite well. What about you guys? What ships would you name after yourself, or others on the forums?
  2. The movie wasn't bad, but unfortunately I did see it before reading the books. Side effect of never having heard of it until the movie came out I'm afraid. I got a 35 first time around, and after further contemplation managed a 41 for the second try. And I too have no idea what Web 2.0 is, though the link Jahled posted seems to clear it up mostly. But not completely. Maybe I'll get interested enough to go digging myself... or not.
  3. To argue in favor of Tofu A) Any nanobot used to repair arteries will have plenty of testing before seeing use in a human patient. No amount of practice creating glasses for a fly will impact the ability to create such a nanobot, considering that time could have been used to work on the nanobot instead, a more direct and useful method of learning. B) As a showcase, this fails. First, not very many people will hear about it, and most of those who do are generally going to be the geeky/nerdy people that are looking for this stuff all the time and already know all sorts of things about nanotech. Second, of those who do hear about it and didn't know about nanotech before, the vast majority will say, "Wow, that's cool. I wonder how they got the fly to stay still?" or some other equally irrelenvent nonsense and then move on with life, having completely forgotten the entire thing in a day or two. (I'm going to assume the fly is dead, right?) Third, the group of people who see this and actually remember it will probably be small and fairly inconsequential. (Yes, a few people will see it and get interested, just not that many.) C) As a proof of concept, this DOES have worth. Miniscule, but its there nonetheless. Businesses and governments already understand the implications of making things at this size, so there is no need to prove its usefulness. The ability to do so is useful, but I refer back to A and point out that you could make a non-functunal nanobot of the same size and complexity of shape, furthering your research and showing that something small and complicated can be made. D) To really impress the public, they need something useful. This would gain far more media attention, even if its use is marginal. Say for instance a nanobot capable of walking. Its use is doubtful, but its a sure sign of progress. I could easily see a news story about such a 'bot, with interviews of designers talking about how they are currently working on making the 'bot capable of cutting hair so you don't have to shave (or whatever). Granted they aren't to the stage of making 'bots move around (at least, not that I'm aware of), but surely there is something useful they can make at that size. Perhaps the edge of a super-sharp drill bit, for instance. At heart, I agree with Tofu. Its not very useful and would be time better spent on something else. As to whether they did this on their free time or not, I haven't the foggiest. If they did, then it's probably a great thing because it made them work when they might otherwise not have been, and is therefore furthering the science. If they did this during their normal work hours, then its not so good because they could do something else. But really, I don't see why we should be getting all bent out of shape over this. This is by far not the worst waste of time or money no matter how you look at it, and so isn't really worth getting mad about. Just don't get me started on the usefulness of beer.
  4. Or grow a third arm. Here's a nasty one. Because most people don't know how to work their own appliances (TV, VCR, etc.), you can pull nasty tricks. Simplest is to merely unplug something and see what happens. Otherwise, you can mess with the settings so it doesn't work and just watch the blood pressure rise! And if you really want to be mean, rewire it (can't just hit a button to fix, there's a power light so it looks like its on, and nobody will think to check wires because who would have possibly messed with those?) Alternatively, tie fishing wire (or some other sturdy, hard-to-see material) across doorways, hallways, or whatever. Not ankle height, don't want to really hurt anybody. I've tied doors shut and watched as people get mad trying to open it up, and I've also strung it at chest and thigh height to get some funny faces when they run into it.
  5. I'd test it, except I'm supposed to be testing the Reloaded ships right now... Uh, yeah, see me testing? Anywho, the more stuff I promise to do the less I'll actually do, so I'm staying out of this one. But if somebody finds out, I definately want to know about it.
  6. :Salute: Ok, I'm just going to go with the post-apoc side of things and see how it turns out. Remember, I'm not really trying to make something publishable, merely something I like. To that end, lets see what you think of the real history (remember I posted previously the commonly believed history; here's what really happened. You might remember parts of it from when I explained the 'magic system'). Yes, its long. It is going to be a book after all Actual History: Isaac Newton predicted the world would end in the year 2060. As the date approached, the world’s political climate was strained with America in decline and China having annexed Japan (on top of their previous annexation of other territories). With tension mounting over the Middle East’s development of nuclear weapons, fear rose that Newton was actually right, and nuclear war would actually end life on Earth. To prevent it, nuclear weapons were used in pinpoint strikes against the Middle East… only to escalate into the nuclear war that they were trying to prevent. A second “Black Plagueâ€
  7. Or increase the number of characters capable of research... or decrease the research required by their stuff. Heck, while I'm mentioning ways to make things difficult, bump up their diplomats stats so they convert planets faster, maybe even add a few diplomats.
  8. Ok, so this isn't working. The game that I'm playing (where I'm supposed to get some traitors) has plenty of traitors all right. For the other side! I'm always getting messages that a diplomacy mission of theirs has been foiled, even if my intel on the planet is hundreds of days old. But nooo, none of my missions are being foiled randomly. Stupid traitors. (You know, in any other setting, this would have sounded very weird. But somehow it doesn't. Maybe its just me, and complaining about not having traitors in your group is weird all the time.)
  9. Meh? I replied to this hours ago. Where did my reply go...? No matter. Basically, it looks to me like I had my basic info right, but the terms switched. Probably because 'the web' sounds more like the physical part to me then 'the internet' does. Anywho, had I guessed on intraweb, I would have said something about a LAN for businesses, or like the thing schools have. Surprisingly, that would have been fairly close to your definition Scath. And to defend myself ever so slightly, intraweb is an outdated term as far as my peers and I are concerned... What I said there stands, not many people my age use the term. We say its the buisness's/school's/whatever's network. After looking around, this isn't technically true, but for the most part I'm not inclined to make sure everything I say is technically true (when its 11:59, I will always say its 12:00 )
  10. For most of us who have grown up with the internet, the words 'web', 'net', and 'internet' all mean the same thing. Intraweb is an outdated term (meaning not many people my age even know it exists, much less use the word). I admit, I don't know exactly what the intraweb is. I could guess, but frankly I'm too lazy to think that hard. As I understand it, the web refers to online activities/databases in general (internet, gopher space, etc.) and the internet refers only to the most recent and most popular adaptation of those databases, the one I'm using right now and that is accessable through IE, Opera, Firefox, and other browsers (hence 'internet browser'). Though I'm curious, would you classify ftp as being internet or web? Edit: Forgot to mention the world wide web, which is different from web in general. WWW is part of the interent, but the internet also uses WWW2 and others.
  11. You can download SWRE from this site, and using it you can directly adjust the AI value for a ship. Raise it, and they will build more of them. Unfortunately, it is the AI value for every computation regarding that ship; i.e. it also makes the computer think that the ship is more/less powerful then it really is depending on what you do to the number. The combined AI values of all ships in combat determines the likelyhood of the computer retreating, the chances that they will attack your planets, and many more things. Its a dangerous thing to edit, with many unforseen consequences. You might be better off lowering maintainance points for other things, like troops and facilities. This way you keep the game balance but still have more mp. Yes, a troop regiment doesn't take more then a few mp, but when you have 100 of them around it adds up real quick. Same goes for facilities.
  12. Yes. Check out RebEd's entry on the research characters, there's a number assigned to each research category, designating their ability to research. Actually, if you wanted to you could make other characters capable of research, or alter the speeds that the existing guys do...
  13. Just to help you out, there are two characters capable of researching in each category (two for ships, two for troops, two for facilities) for each side. There is also one character who can research all three. I usually put this guy to researching ships, as there are more ships to research then the other categories so that area needs the most help. I'd suggest researching on planets you have well protected, as an enemy fleet that blockades the planet will interrupt the mission. Also note that each advancement happens in a certain order, every time. If you aren't researching an area with somebody, you will eventually get that advancement, but it takes much longer. Just keep researching, the advanced things are very important to get as soon as possible. Recruitment missions succeed more often when done on a planet that fully supports you... so get the diplomacy done first, then recruit. Killing/capturing characters can happen in these ways: 1) Send your characters on a mission to do so 2) Assault the planet where the enemy character is 3) Destroy the ship the enemy is on 4) Foil the mission said enemy was trying to perform on you. If you have the forces, it is easiest to sabotage the shields and defensive batteries on a planet, do a military bombardment to destroy troops, and then assault the planet. Very few characters are capable of escaping from this situation (only those with very high combat ratings, like Vader, stand a good chance, though it is possible for everyone), so this is often the easiest. If you can't do that, then send several characters with high combat and espionage to do the job. Make one or two with the highest combat be team leaders (left side) and the rest be decoys (right side). If they can't get it done, try to sabotage troops on the planet first. You should almost NEVER send anyone to kill/capture someone if there is a fleet of any size orbiting the planet. Fleets, even only a few ships, are VERY GOOD at foiling missions, especially with Admirals. To 'move' a construction yard, what you do is have construction yard "X" build construction yard "Y" at the desired location using the destination option. When the yard is completed (and I suggest you wait until it actually arrives as well) then you go back to X and scrap the facility. Takes awhile, but its possible.
  14. *cough* Stay on topic... *cough* This seems to be an easy one to get off on... we're all getting off! Anyways, anybody know the answers to my earlier questions?
  15. After you get the basics down, check back here as I'll have a comprehensive faq/strategy guide going up soon... once you have some game experience under the belt, it will probably help with some tactics and fill you in on the lesser-known oddities. (Speaking of which, when I get it finished is there any chance of having it uploaded into the download section? At the rate its going, it will certainly be large enough to deserve a spot...)
  16. Not one to beak, but uh... well, I didn't say that...
  17. It takes longer to get a status report? Didn't know that... does that apply to research missions as well? Doesn't seem to apply to sab/esp/capture missions though, as I frequently send large groups on such missions and have them end in as little as one day. I was also wondering how many decoys are useful. Is it lots of decoys, a few actual agents (like the AI does), lots of agents and a few decoys (a few posts seem to indicate this), or about half/half (like I do)? Oh yes, and does the combat stat have any effect for decoys, or is it just their esp stats?
  18. Now that is scary...
  19. Every state has specific adjectives. Just most aren't known of outside of that state, or the surrounding states. For instance, there's the Minnesotian accent, and the Idahoan gaunt (aka the walk of the farmer), to name a few.
  20. Now you've done it. Its the end of the world as we know it... Actually, there is another catch. You have to log on with two computers with different IP addresses. So if you have two computers at your house (like me) and they share an IP (like with a router) then it doesn't work.
  21. What happens when you find a traitor? Dang, now I've got to go play a game and just wait around for a traitor... do you catch him? ooo, can they then escape, join the enemy, and work against you directly? Especially if they are force sensitive, this would be cool! I'm glad I'm figuring all this stuff out before I complete my faq... its important info I should put in there. Cooked by the Ewoks? Lando wasn't on Ender's moon for that little adventure...
  22. Umm... no. I like the feeling of power I'm getting right now too much to release my secret to the public. Besides, then everybody and their pet grandmother would have their name listed six times! Oh, Tex? I don't suggest using poisoned darts for toothpicks; nicking yourself with one could be bad, unless you know a certain Old Republic jedi who looks sorta like a bird... *While Tex is distracted with the implications of poking himself in the gums, I make my escape! My next evil plan will be far more complicated and involve at least three superweapons and 4,000 idiots better suited to a life at McDonalds then as evil henchmen!*
  23. I figured that it was a different name for the same one when Mitth posted a link for Rebellion info, but wasn't sure. My biggest problem with the manual is that it tells you most everything you need to know, but its like reading a technical manual. Too much information delivered in a boring way; I found it easier to learn it myself than to read the manual and try and remember it all. However, once you get the hang of things, go back and read through the manual. You'll find lots of little tidbits of information you hadn't caught onto yet, but because you already know the basics you actually stand a chance at remembering them.
  24. Supremecy? This is SW:Rebellion we're talking about, right? If not, then disregard my post... I tried reading the manual. Gave up not long after I started. For me, it worked much better to try playing an easy game, small galaxy. Do whatever you want, and when you can't figure something out, then look to the manual. It makes for a nice Q/A book, but not much of a tutorial. To build mines or anything else, you need to have a planet with free energy available. There are several bars beneath each planet, one represents the free energy available. In addition, to build a mine there must also be free raw materials available, represented by a seperate bar beneath each planet. The manual has a picture identifying which is which. You can right-click on a construction yard, select destination, and click on another planet you control to build somewhere else, like a planet that does have available energy. For diplomacy, you should select the character, send them on a mission to a planet, and after they've been there for awhile you should get a report back. Also, if they are doing a diplomacy mission and something besides them effects the planet in your favor (like another person doing diplomacy there), and this makes the planet like you to the maximum amount, then they will end their mission without reporting back to you. Hopefully this helps... as for space battles, figure out the rest first and work on tactical combat after you've got things down. I know it took me awhile to really get tactical combat down, and since you can have the computer do it for you its easier to focus on one thing at a time.
  25. AAH! Somebody found me out! *shoots Tex with posioned blowgun dart from behind* Too bad I'm not a mod or admin... I can't get rid of the evidence! At least he didn't see when I was listed four times...
