Raven releases Jedi Outcast source code
Master_Xan replied to Evaders99's topic in General Discussion
Man. How did I miss this topic? That's pretty cool of Raven. -
If you want that old school cred, refer to it as the "Super Luke" strategy. Looks pretty good. Few typos here and there. In the new section about Luke, it should read: "... ensure your target is not too well protected; if you send Luke after Palpatine on Coruscant, Luke may well be captured by the fleet orbiting the world." Speaking of which you should do a Replace All for "Corescant" into "Coruscant" Otherwise it's a very well done guide, extremely informative and even taught me a thing or two I don't know. Like the traitor mechanic. Which is absolutely terrible and from now on I'm clicking "Will not betray their side" for everybody because I happen to enjoy long games. Now if only I could disable natural disasters... Thanks! Oh, and I seem to recall seeing it referred to as Super Luke before. Oops. Figures I would misspell something like that. Thanks for letting me know. I *think* you can disable natural disasters. I heard about someone doing that with a hex editor, or at least they reduced the probability to zero. But I can't find anything about it, so either it was a daydream of mine, or the info has disappeared. I think I also heard of some crazy way to build stuff in the game and reduce the odds; something along the lines of leaving one energy free on every planet. If you find anything, let me know. EDIT: Changes made, and I edited a couple of sentences for clarity. Also added a to-do list on the first page. This is starting to turn into good practice for when I attempt to publish my novel.

Great feedback. RogueIce, you are correct; I've never had Luke not come back a Jedi Knight, but that is probably why. Luke doesn't go to Dagobah for a few (or several) hundred days, and by then he has failed a few missions and "felt the force" several times. I'll add in the correction for that and the researchers (which I don't know why I wrote that way), and budious' idea for leveling Luke, into the guide. Edits won't happen til tomorrow though. I'm happy to get more feedback, if anyone has some! EDIT: New version uploaded.

Finally completed rebuilding the guide from the ground-up. It is currently 35 pages and still has three incomplete sections. You can access it from my signature; check back in a few days to see the completed version. Feel free to give me additional material to include in the guide, or if you see errors of any kind. Many of the completed sections may be expanded, or reworked for ease of reading. Those objectives won't happen until after the other three portions are finished.

Budious, that is actually the "old stuff" I was referencing. Great to see those old sites still up, by the way. For others, I have included my rebuild guide in my signature. It still has three incomplete sections; these will be updated in the next few days. I mention all this here simply because I mentioned it already in the thread; comments should be posted here.

I dug through some old stuff and found references to it. I think you are mostly right. What I saw said you only get info on ships in the system, rather than the whole caboodle, but that's still pretty useful. This could be tested pretty easily, but I haven't had time recently.

I'm fond of VMware Player. Other folks like Virtualbox. Both are free and will work just fine, though I've never used them on Windows 8. You can install almost any old Windows OS. Win 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, probably even NT should all work. If you have a choice, go with XP. If you can't do that, go with 2000 or 98.

You ever hit South Dakota, let me know.
-
Cancelled espionage missions? What's that?
-
Oh nasty. Then they could have CC7700s off the bat.
-
Or snag Budious' copy...

No idea. I doubt the two mods would conflict with that, but the unofficial patch might. You could always use a mounted drive if things don't play nicely together.
-
Collater Index Fix Unofficial Patch? I've never played Morrowind, so I'm not sure if these are what you want. The second one references some sort of official fix; don't know if you already have that or not. The last link is the unofficial patch. Or I think it is. If you aren't using that, definitely try it out for other fixes, even if it doesn't fix the journal/quest markings.
-
I wondered about that...
-
Huh. Never knew. Guess I never tried to move my HQ to an uncolonized system.
-
Wait, does sending the HQ to a system cause it to be inhabited, as if you had landed troops on the planet?
-
I shall investigate.
-
Probably good to do this here instead of the other thread. Isn't there a mod to fix that in Morrowind?
-
Ew. I hate Google Doc formatting. Is there an option to keep it in my formatting? Or will it default to the Google stuff?
-
I've always wondered. What happens if the Empire blockades/takes control of a system the HQ was en-route to?

So... I'm a computer nerd who has never actually hosted content for outside consumption. A few years back I wrote a strategy guide for SWRebellion, and want to put it up somewhere. Who has suggestions on a site/service I can use? Preferably somewhere free that will keep it up indefinitely. Speed isn't an issue (just a word doc), and I shouldn't need thousands of connections a month. Once it is hosted somewhere, I will put the link in my siggy, and edit this post to include it as well.

I'm also cheap and rarely buy games before they drop significantly in price, but I made an exception for Skyrim and Starcraft 2. My graduation present to myself was Skyrim and the computer I built to run it. I may also buy Planetary Annihilation when it first comes out... If you have a computer to handle it, you should scrape up the money for the Skyrim Legendary edition. With the community patches installed, it is a very, very good game. And with so many mods to choose from, Skyrim is very customizable. Did you play Oblivion? Which game is better, Morrowind or Oblivion?

I feel the same way about prisoners. I also agree about diplomacy; getting just one extra system with a few factories can make a huge difference in the long haul. The very first thing I do, every game, is set every facility I own to start producing something. I go in this order: first, get construction yards to produce more construction yards. Then shipyards need to produce fighters (TIEs for Empire, or X-Wings for Alliance). Lastly, I get the training facilities going. Usually cheap troops if I'm the Empire, but a mix of Bothans and Long-probe Y-Wings if I'm Alliance. Imperial troops to help fortify systems that like the Alliance and help protect against sabotage, and the Alliance personnel to find where Imperial fleets are. I primarily use Bothans on my own systems at first. Aggressive Imperial players (or the AI) will send fleets out early on, counting on much heavier Imperial capital ships to bully through and bombard. Bothans help you find them before they hit you. Priority should be worlds without shield gens or lasers, as these are more tempting for a quick raid, and any planet with construction yards or shipyards (to catch enemy personnel conducting sabotage missions). If you do find a fleet inbound, you have the chance to move extra ships or fighters in, or pull units out. The long range Y-Wings I send to systems in the Rim and to Imperial planets. If the Y-Wings fail at Imperial worlds, they usually will give you details about enemy fleets in orbit. Figuring out where the enemy is can help you decide which sectors to pull out of, or which Imperial worlds are ripe for early sabotage missions. Nothing hurts the Imps more than losing a lone ISD to sabotage, but you have to locate it before you can hit it. Imperial worlds lacking fleet support are much easier to get access to for hitting ground targets like construction yards, helping to make your sabotage personnel much more effective. After I have the facilities building, I always get major characters recruiting. As the Empire I always want to recruit more diplomats as quickly as possible (and research personnel: TIE interceptors are very important), and as the Alliance, I need more espionage-type characters. Other folks use their major characters for diplomacy, but I usually prefer having the extra characters. If you are the Alliance, it is best to move Han, Luke, and Leia off of Yavin and into the Core; that way the characters they recruit don't have to make the journey one at a time, and you can take advantage of Han's movement boost. Whether you bring Mothma into the Core or not is a toss up; sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Personally, I always abandon Yavin entirely. Once I have the major players active, I get the minor guys moving, then I group my fleets. Usually, I prioritize what sectors I care about most, then move ships to the most important systems in those sectors. Usually systems with construction yards or shipyards, or Corescant if you are Imperial. With all that done, I reorganize my ground forces. Troops move to important worlds, fighters that didn't move out with orbiting carriers get moved to key planets, and static defenses (like shield generators) are scrapped if they aren't on important planets. That typically finishes my "pre-game" preparations. At that point, I start looking at strategic goals. The Alliance needs another system in the Rim to evacuate their HQ to if necessary. The Empire needs shipyards for building fighters and escort carriers. Both sides need construction yards. And the list goes on. BTW, if you find my thoughts useful, I wrote a strategy guide. Happy to send it your way.

Never did play Morrowind. Discovered the franchise when Oblivion came out and never went back. I've been playing Skyrim lately (with 200ish mods installed, of course).

Fleets - the order of capital ships in UI
Master_Xan replied to AceCommander's question in Questions from Newbies
That makes sense. I'm also curious about how individual ships auto-target, such as when their target is out of range and they are moving to get into range. Do ships target the closest enemy vessel, or are there other criteria? Not that any of this was important, really. Just curious.
