  22. The war against the Yuuzhan Vong was an excruciating crucible for young, Jacen Solo who survived capture, torture and questioned faith to transform from a confused youth into a determined adult. At the start of the conflict, Jacen stood at a crossroads, consumed by indecision, and concerned with the implications of using the Force. He was a complicated young man burdened with responsibility of being a Jedi. His conscience wasn't always so plagued. In fact, Jacen lived a happy, adventure-filled childhood of privilege, being the son of the Chief of State of the New Republic. He and his twin sister, Jaina, were born to Leia Organa and Han Solo on Coruscant during the end of the Thrawn crisis. As infants, the Solo twins were strong in the Force, and had an inseparable mental bond between them. During the earlier years of their lives, the twins were sequestered at safeworlds meant to protect them from Imperial attacks. Ultimately, their parents decided it would be safest to keep the family together. They were safeguarded and tended to by Chewbacca, C-3PO and their nanny, Winter. When the twins were a year-and-a-half old, they were joined by a younger brother, Anakin Solo, also strong in the Force. Even before the tender age of three, the twins managed to toddle into adventure. Sneaking away from C-3PO, the two took a decommissioned turbolift into the scary depths of Coruscant. Luckily, they were rescued before any harm befell them. A short time later, Jacen came to the defense of his uncle Luke Skywalker. Luke was rendered unconscious by the actions of a dark spirit, Exar Kun. None of Luke's students could see the disembodied spirit of their Master, but the young Jedi twins could. Luke guided Jacen to defend to his uncle's body from attacking predators, and the two-year old even wielded Luke's lightsaber. When in their early teens, Jacen and Jaina joined Luke's Jedi academy on Yavin 4. There, they became friends with fellow students Lowbacca, and Tenel Ka. As Jacen studied, he developed an affinity and sensitivity towards nature and the living Force. He could instinctively communicate with animals, and kept a large menagerie of small critters in his quarters in the Massassi temple. During this time, he and his friends weathered many a crisis, from attacks of dark Jedi initiates of the Second Imperium, to the anti-human activists of the Diversity Alliance. While Jacen learned much from these experiences, they could hardly prepare him for the carnage that would follow shortly thereafter. The Yuuzhan Vong invasion came as a shock to the Jedi order. This new menace was inexplicably removed from the Force, and seemingly beyond all efforts of negotiation. While the aliens loathed the inorganic technology of the galaxy, they fostered a special hatred to the Jedi and their supernatural powers in particular. As the war escalated, the Yuuzhan Vong called for the delivery of the Jedi as prisoners in exchange for a cease in hostilities. A battered and beleaguered galaxy was all too ready to listen. With the new Jedi order challenged from all fronts, Jacen was torn. He believed the Force to be more than just a weapon wielded against a foe. He was concerned that many of the Jedi, including his younger brother Anakin, were adopting too aggressive a stance. In the thick of war, Jacen turned his back on his powers. Rather than using them offensively, he instead abandoned his talents to contemplate on his inner connection to the Force, to seek out answers to put his mind at ease. Jacen applied his more passive talents in the Force in a daring mission to Myrkr. A Jedi strike force, led by his brother Anakin, was to infiltrate a Yuuzhan Vong cloning facility where the invaders crafted deadly Jedi-hunting beasts called voxyn. Jacen would use the Force to bind the team together into a cohesive fighting unit. The mission ended disastrously. The Yuuzhan Vong killed young Anakin, Jaina reacted by touching the dark side of the Force, and Jacen was captured by enemy troops led by Vergere and Nom Anor. Jacen disappeared. His presence in the Force had seemingly vanished. Many in the New Republic considered him dead, though his mother never lost faith that he was alive, somehow, somewhere. Jacen awoke to find himself in the Embrace of Pain, a rack-like torture device favored by the Yuuzhan Vong. His captor was the enigmatic Vergere, who puzzled him with queries and riddles as Jacen drowned in his pain and sorrow. Yet his inner strength of character staved off madness or total collapse. Aboard a seedship -- a vessel designed to transform worlds into Yuuzhan Vong strongholds -- Jacen was put to work at the Nursery, a chamber where the organic tools of transformation were nurtured. Jacen's natural empathy for living creatures forged a strong bond with the dhuryam, a sort of larval form of a World Brain. Using the implanted slave seed beneath his flesh as a conduit, Jacen was able to communicate with the living instruments of Yuuzhan Vong technology. He used this connection to stage a daring escape from captivity, commanding Yuuzhan Vong amphistaffs to surround him like living armor. The dhuryam, protective of Jacen, aided his efforts of escape, but Vergere foiled his larger plans of sabotage. Jacen and Vergere fled to Coruscant. The city planet's entire surface was undergoing a radical transformation. Yuuzhan Vong organic growths covered the once gleaming metropolis, remaking the planet into a Yuuzhan Vong paradise. Vergere removed the slave seed from Jacen, but he found he could still sense the Yuuzhan Vong. Once again surrounded by Yuuzhan Vong captors, he surrendered and agreed to join their cause. He became the "khattazz al'Yun," or Avatar of God. Nom Anor intended to use Jacen to sacrifice his twin sister, Jaina, thus fulfilling an ancient Yuuzhan Vong prophecy. But young Solo's true allegiance was his own. During a test of Jacen's faith, the Yuuzhan Vong ordered Solo to sacrifice a captured Jedi, Ganner Rhysode. Instead, the two Jedi turned against their captors. As Ganner valiantly held of the Yuuzhan Vong, Jacen confronted the World Brain controlling the transformation of Coruscant. The World Brain remembered the bond that Jacen had forged earlier, and Jacen suggested to it to work against the Yuuzhan Vong. Ganner perished that day, though Jacen escaped with Vergere. He returned to the dwindling New Republic territories, haggard, thin and hardened. He was given a much needed vacation, but returned to frontline combat aboard the cruiser Ralroost. As the newly formed Galactic Alliance emerged, Jacen accompanied his uncle Luke Skywalker into the Unknown Regions to seek a solution to the Yuuzhan Vong menace. _____________________________________________________________ Anakin Solo inherited much from his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker. Aside from the name, he was also prodigiously talented in the Force, as a pilot, and as a mechanic. The youngest son of Han and Leia Organa Solo, Anakin was born during a time of crisis. The resurrected Emperor began a campaign of terror, threatening worlds throughout the New Republic with a diabolical new weapon, the Galaxy Gun. While still in the womb, Anakin was threatened by the Emperor, who sought to preserve his dark spirit in a young body and targeted the unborn child. This clone of Palpatine was killed before he could continue his evil plot. During infancy, Anakin Solo was sequestered from the rest of his family, growing up in an armored and armed nursery on the hidden planetoid of Anoth. After a botched kidnapping attempt by Imperial forces, Han and Leia decided to keep the family together on Coruscant. Anakin was a quiet child. While his older siblings, the twins Jacen and Jaina, had each other to play and bicker with, Anakin would often sit by himself, focused in his little world. He rarely spoke, but he was undeniably bright. Even as a toddler, he had the mechanical aptitude to disassemble and modify his nanny droids! When Anakin was seven years old, he was swept into the events of the Corellian crisis, an ultimately defeated insurrection attempt in the Corellian system. Conspirators tried to take over immense planetary repulsors scattered throughout the system and harness their power as weapons. Through the Force, Anakin was not only able to discover the repulsor hidden on Drall, but was able to instinctively activate it just by touching it. Anakin began instruction at his Uncle Luke's Jedi academy at the age of 11. There, he made friends with a precocious nine-year old named Tahiri. The two shared a number of adventures, freeing the spirits of trapped Massassi children from an ancient Sith temple, awakening the ancient Jedi Master Ikrit, and recovering the long lost lightsaber of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Aside from Jedi training, Anakin honed his piloting skills through formal training on Coruscant. He became a capable pilot, following in his father's footsteps. His piloting skills were needed during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion that shook the galaxy 21 years after the Battle of Endor. Fifteen-year old Anakin was forced to fly the Millennium Falcon in its escape from the doomed world of Sernpidal. The freighter was taking on as many refugees as possible before Sernpidal's moon could crash into its surface. Anakin kept the Falcon grounded as long as he could, soaring away from the cataclysm at the last possible instant. This decision resulted in the death of Chewbacca, who was unable to board the Falcon in time. The death of the beloved Wookiee forever changed the dynamics of the Solo family. Anakin blamed himself, as did Han Solo, who was too consumed by grief and anger to be worried about hurting his son. It was many dark months before the two reconciled. Further straining familial relations were the fundamentally opposed Force philosophies adopted by Anakin and Jacen. Though they were both apprenticed to their Uncle Luke, the two had very different outlooks on what it meant to be a Jedi. Anakin believed the Force to be a tool at a Jedi's disposal, to be used whenever possible in attempt to quash evil. Jacen was far more serene, and took a measured, pacifistic stance, believing any aggressive use of the Force to be a step towards the dark side. This debate came to a head just before the Battle of Fondor. The Corellians wanted Anakin Solo to again activate the ancient repulsors of their system and use Centerpoint Station as a weapon to destroy the Yuuzhan Vong fleet. Jacen felt that using the Force to wield a weapon so huge was tantamount to mass murder. Anakin gave in to his brother's arguments, but the Corellians fired anyway, without the help of the Jedi. The resulting misfire destroyed both enemy and allied fleets. Anakin blamed both Jacen and himself for the casualties. When the Yuuzhan Vong came to Yavin 4, threatening the Jedi students studying there, Anakin impetuously rushed off to save them. He freed Tahiri from imprisonment, and found an unlikely ally in Vua Rapuung, a Yuuzhan Vong outcast. In his short time with Rapuung, Anakin gained a better understanding of the strange alien menace. Despite the spreading chaos and destruction of the ongoing war, there were moments of renewal and affirmation of life. In his rescue of Tahiri, the two young friends discovered affectionate feelings for one another within their hearts. While driving away the Yuuzhan Vong from the world of Yag'Dhul, Tahiri and Anakin exchanged their first kiss. Anakin's bold stance and daring nature made him into a popular figure among the Jedi and New Republic. Many privately whispered that he would someday take Luke Skywalker's place as the most powerful Jedi. The bloody events of the ongoing war would indisputably provide an answer to that speculation. On a daring mission in to the heart of Yuuzhan Vong territory, Anakin Solo led a strike force of Jedi to find and destroy the source of the deadly Jedi-hunting voxyn. He died valiantly in combat, and the Force transmitted the resonance of his death across the galaxy to his family. _____________________________________________________________ Jaina Solo is the eldest of the Solo children by five minutes. She and her twin brother Jacen were born on Coruscant, during the final days of Grand Admiral Thrawn's attempt to retake the Galactic Core. During these times of strife, Leia and Han sequestered their children on various safeworlds, keeping them out of harm's way. After a number of attempts to capture the Solo children, the parents eventually decided to keep the family together. On Coruscant, the twins were raised by Winter and C-3PO. As Leia was Chief of State of the New Republic, she rarely had time to devote to family, though she made every possible effort. As she grew older, Jaina began to notice Leia's distance more and more, a distance she would later come to resent. Headstrong Jaina showed a mechanical aptitude that made her father proud. At nine years of age, she was already flying the Millennium Falcon, and knew enough to help her father with simple repairs. By the time she was 14, Jaina was already a capable pilot. She attended her Uncle Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy on Yavin 4, honing her impressive talents in the Force, and making new and long-lasting friends, such as Lowbacca, Tenel Ka and Zekk. Surviving run-ins with the Second Imperium, the Diversity Alliance and other foes, Jaina then apprenticed herself to Mara Jade. The two bonded, and Jaina grew both as a Jedi, and as a pilot. Her skills behind the controls of an X-wing fighter earned her a position in Rogue Squadron during the Yuuzhan Vong crisis. Flying as Rogue Eleven, Jaina went by the nickname "Sticks." While at Ithor, Jaina met a fellow pilot named Jagged Fel, an ally of the New Republic flying with a Chiss defense force. The young woman felt something stir within her, and she definitely admired Jagged Fel for his piloting skill and icy cool demeanor. The Yuuzhan Vong crisis has been a trial of character for young Jaina, who was forced into the hardships of war before even reaching adulthood. In her carefree days of adventure as a teen, she had been spared lessons in mortality. With the death of Chewbacca, and the subsequent straining of family bonds among the Solos, Jaina has learned indelible lessons that are shaping her character. Leia believes her daughter to be the most pragmatic of her children. Whereas contemplative Jacen is often crippled with indecision, and impetuous Anakin would often plunge into action heedless of the consequences, Jaina would measure her actions and suit them to the moment. She is not without a temper, as her stubbornness will often lead her to arguments. Jaina has, on occasion, lambasted her brother for his passivity and her mother for her distance. With the trying times of war, Jaina's temper came close to being her undoing. After the death of her youngest brother and disapperance of her twin, Jaina was enraged and touched the dark side of the Force. Her pragmatism dangerously eclipsed her compassion and faith in her uncle's Jedi teachings, and she found herself allied to Kyp Durron, a strong-minded Jedi seeking more proactive reform in the order. In escaping the botched Jedi mission that claimed her brother's life, Jaina stole a Yuuzhan Vong vessel, the Ksstarr. With their Coruscant home conquered by the Yuuzhan Vong, she led the remnants of the Jedi strike force to the Hapes Cluster. On Hapes, Jaina became embroiled in court intrigue, as the scheming former Queen Mother Ta'a Chume tried to orchestrate a marriage between her son, Prince Isolder, and Jaina, in a failed bid to replace the current Queen Mother Teneniel Djo. By closely examining the Ksstarr, Jaina realized a fundamental underpinning of Yuuzhan Vong spacefaring technology: bodies in space are recognized by their unique gravitic signature. She began exploring plans to use that knowledge against the Yuuzhan Vong. Her risky tests prove successful. Her deceptive tactics wreaked havoc with the Yuuzhan Vong's ability to identify friends and foe, prompting her to rename the vessel Trickster. Jaina's reputation began to grow thanks to crafty disinformation spread by New Republic agents. The Yuuzhan Vong began to associate Jaina with their trickster goddess, something New Republic commanders wholeheartedly encouraged by referring to her as "Goddess," "Great One," and similar. Jaina fought tirelessly through campaigns at Borelias, Obroa-skai and Ebaq 9, flying alongside Jag Fel. The two tentatively explored their feelings for one another, risking love against a backdrop of war. She achived the rank of lieutenant colonel, and is now flying escort for her parents' mission of reuiniting the fragments of the former New Republic under the new banner of the Galactic Allia

  24. Kyle Katarn was an elite Rebel agent entrusted with some of the most crucial missions of the Rebel Alliance. It was Katarn that single-handedly infiltrated an Imperial installation on Danuta, securing the technical plans of the Empire's Death Star battle station. A former Imperial, Katarn was born on the Sullustan colony moon of Sulon, living a simple existence as a farmer with his father Morgan. Unaware of his father's Rebel sympathies, Kyle joined the Imperial Academy at Carida. He was indoctrinated and became a decorated Imperial trooper. While in the Academy, Kyle's father was killed. Official records indicated that the elder Katarn had been murdered by Rebel dissidents. Kyle learned the truth, however, from a Rebel agent named Jan Ors. His father was killed by the Empire for treason. Disgusted with the institution he had joined, Kyle discarded his badges and merits, and cast away his Imperial trappings. He resolved to join the Rebellion. Kyle became a highly capable and recommended Rebel agent, vouched for by the respected Jan Ors. Kyle drew the attention of no less than Mon Mothma, leader of the Alliance. She entrusted Katarn with that fateful mission to Danuta, and after the Battle of Yavin, Katarn was instrumental in quelling the threat of the Imperial dark trooper project. Returning to Sulon, Kyle learned that his father had been aiding a refugee effort on the barren world of Ruusan. Morgan had discovered ancient ruins on Ruusan pointing the way to the Valley of the Jedi, the fabled battleground between the ancient Jedi and Sith. The Valley represented a great focal point of energy that if exploited could turn the tide in the perpetual battle between light and dark. Kyle knew that the location of the Valley should never fall into Imperial hands. Others were already on the path to discovering the Valley, however. The Dark Jedi Jerec and his six henchmen, Gorc, Pic, Maw, Sariss, Boc and Yun, were determined to seize the nexus of power. One by one, Katarn defeated them, though in his aggressive strikes, he came dangerously close to succumbing to the dark side of the Force. Deep in the Valley of the Jedi, Kyle confronted Jerec, the very man who had killed Morgan Katarn. The two did battle, and when Kyle slew Jerec, he fulfilled an ancient prophecy. The spirits of long-dead Jedi, trapped in the Valley for a thousand years, were finally freed. With this energy unleashed, the Valley of the Jedi's worth as a weapon was effectively eliminated. Long used to operating independently, Katarn at first refused Luke Skywalker's offer to become a Jedi apprentice. Instead, he continued to serve the Alliance, now the New Republic, on many important missions. After a troubling run-in with the dark side on the forgotten Sith world of Dromund Kaas, Katarn conceded that he would benefit from Skywalker's tutelage, and joined the Jedi Master's fledgling Jedi academy. Kyle is human male with rugged good looks and an athletic build. He brandishes a green-bladed lightsaber, though he has been known to have access to a veritable arsenal of personal weaponry. He often travels with Jan Ors aboard the battered starship, the Moldy Crow. _____________________________________________________________ Luke Skywalker's life has been indelibly changed by encounters with remarkable people. But if ever one person can be said to have had the greatest impact on his life, it is his beloved wife, the fiercely independent and stubbornly determined Mara Jade. She was once known as the Emperor's Hand -- a highly skilled assassin and operative who could hear Emperor Palpatine's bidding from across the galaxy. Trained since childhood and honed into a weapon, Mara learned self-sufficiency, piloting, marksmanship and talents in the Force while serving her dark master. One of her last missions was the assassination of Luke Skywalker. Emperor Palpatine was dismayed by the changes in Vader following the Dark Lord's lightsaber duel with his son on Bespin. Skywalker had stirred something in Vader, and the Emperor distrusted his closest agent. As a contingency, the Emperor dispatched Mara to track down and kill Skywalker. Mara knew that Skywalker would attempt a rescue of his imprisoned friend, Han Solo. She infiltrated Jabba's palace, posing as a dancer named Arica. She failed to get close enough to Skywalker, and Jabba refused to let her attend the execution party heading out into the desert. She missed her chance. A perfectionist, Mara could not abide failure. She wished to make it up to her dark master, but never got that chance. In mid-transit back to Coruscant, Mara felt the Emperor's death through the Force. Her entire life of high-placed contacts, elevated status, and lifelong purpose collapsed with the defeat of the Empire at the Battle of Endor. Through the Force, Mara received fragmented images of the Emperor's final moments. Luke Skywalker was there... as was Vader... and the two murdered her mentor. For years, she blamed Skywalker for Palpatine's death and the loss of her purpose. Mara floated along the fringe of galactic society in the years after the Battle of Endor. She eventually found herself as a pilot and operative in Talon Karrde's smuggling organization. During the events of Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign against the New Republic, Mara came face to face with Luke. The two had to cooperate to survive the wilderness of the planet Myrkr. They settled on an uneasy peace -- and Luke explained that it was not he who had killed Palpatine, but rather it was Vader. Witnessing Luke Skywalker's Jedi abilities, Mara developed a begrudging respect for the war hero. Though she openly and brusquely questioned many of his philosophies, the two were often paired together during the Thrawn crisis, and their talents complemented each other perfectly time and again. Following the defeat of Thrawn, Luke gave Mara the gift of his first lightsaber, a weapon long thought lost but recovered by agents of the Empire. Mara didn't want to be saddled with commitment to Skywalker's new Jedi order, so she refused his invitation to train. After all, she had survived all this time on her own, and had supplemented the Empire's finest training with hard-earned field experience. She had long been independent and the baby-steps of Luke's Jedi praxeum had no place for her. Still, in her efforts to master her talents, she came across Kyle Katarn, another self-trained Jedi who had ignored Skywalker's invitation. The two trained together for a while, but the dark side crossed their paths. Realizing the dangers of the Force, Katarn admitted that the group learning experience of Skywalker's academy had its benefits, and became one of the first students. While Mara did visit the academy on occasion, she did not become a full-time student. Mara focused on her career in the fringe, accepting increased responsibility in Talon Karrde's newly formed Smugglers Alliance. She undertook a number of information-gathering missions, pairing with Lando Calrissian on occasion. Despite the dashing gambler's best efforts, he was never able to woo Jade into anything other than a strictly business relationship. Karrde, who was grooming Mara to be his successor, wanted her to gather an even wider variety of skills. Mara became increasingly independent in the following years, loosening her ties with the Smugglers Alliance. During the Camaasi Document incident, Mara was investigating Chiss activities on the distant world of Nirauan. She once again teamed with Luke Skywalker as they infiltrated the mysterious outpost known as the Hand of Thrawn. Together, their skills and personalities strengthened each other perfectly; if not for their pairing, they would have perished. It was then that they realized how perfect a match they were. Despite a decade of tension between the two, and a relationship that started with near-violent acrimony, the two had fallen in love. Following the peace treaty that brought a formal end to the Galactic Civil War, Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker wed on Coruscant. For a galaxy undergoing seismic political change, the two represented an inspiring ideal and a powerful symbol. A former Imperial agent and the galaxy's most powerful Jedi Master had found a way beyond their past differences to find love. The New Republic, long plagued by war and insurgents, was eager to embrace a time of peace. While Luke continued to train new initiates at the Jedi academy, Mara kept up her contacts in the fringe. She took Luke's niece, Jaina Solo, as a Jedi apprentice. This tranquility, unfortunately, was short-lived. It began in a subtle, insidious fashion. While on a diplomatic mission to Monor II, Mara was secretly infected with a coomb spore, a deadly bio-engineered pathogen crafted by the Yuuzhan Vong. When the full invasion of Yuuzhan Vong forces began, Mara was already weakened, tapping into the power of the Force to sustain her life. Mara focused the Force within her to cleanse her body of this infection. The process was exhausting. It was during this illness that Mara discovered she was pregnant. This galvanized her resolve to fight off the disease. She carried the child to term, and the healing glow of the Force bolstered by the love of mother, father and newborn son finally cured Mara of the Yuuzhan Vong sickness. Despite the carnage and destruction sweeping the galaxy, there was a quiet moment affirming life and hope as Mara Jade Skywalker and Luke Skywalker welcomed their infant son Ben into the world. This peace was short-lived as the Yuuzhan Vong attacks continued to weaken the New Republic and diminish the Jedi ranks. Mara, aboard her Jade Shadow starship, continued flying missions against the invaders while her son was safely sequestered on the Jedi safeworld code-named Eclipse. Together with her husband, Mara voyaged to the conquered world of Coruscant, to investigate strange stirrings in the Force. The once gleaming metropolis world was overgrown with Yuuzhan Vong organic technology, transformed from a modern city to a fetid jungle. In the planet's depths, Mara used her still-functioning access codes to reveal the source of the Force-disturbance. Irek Ismeren, the son of a fellow Emperor's Hand, was corrupted and reformed as Lord Nyax, a dangerously unstable Dark Jedi. After defeating Nyax, and participating in several key missions against the Yuuzhan Vong, Mara is once again next to her husband as he seeks to find an end to the war. Aboard the Jade Shadow, and along with a team of fellow Jedi, Mara and Luke voyage into the depths of the Unknown Regions, seeking the mysterious world of Zonama Sekot that may hold the secrets of ending this long and bloody conflict.
  25. When the Empire splintered after the death of Emperor Palpatine, boundless avarice among the competing warlords hastened the decay of the New Order. Infighting fragmented the once powerful regime, allowing the New Republic to take control of its dwindling territories. Gilad Pellaeon, a veteran Imperial fleet officer with over five decades of experience, stood as a rare example of integrity during those chaotic times. As a young man, Pellaeon lied about his age to gain admittance into Raithal Academy, one of the most prestigious military learning centers in the galaxy. Graduating as an ensign, Pellaeon served with distinction, earning commendations for outwitting pirates over the planet Gavryn. By the time of the Empire, Pellaeon was transferred to the Star Destroyer Chimaera, where he worked his way up the command chain, eventually serving as second-in-command. The Star Destroyer Chimaera was part of the Imperial fleet amassed at the Battle of Endor. When a concentrated assault by Rebel forces killed the ship's captain, Pellaeon seized command of the vessel as the Imperial Fleet was routed. All throughout the battle, Imperial officers were committing tactical blunders, choosing to go out in a blaze of glory than call for a prudent retreat. It was Pellaeon who issued the final order to withdraw, commanding the remnants of the fleet to regroup at Annaj. A dedicated fleet officer, Pellaeon was not fueled by ambition or dreams of power. He was a soldier, not a politician, now serving an Empire without an Emperor. He struggled to maintain order, but many warship commanders refused to follow his leadership. The Empire splintered into scattered fiefdoms ruled by power-hungry warlords, with Pellaeon's small fleet retreating from the growing New Republic territories. It was a far cry from the remembered glories of the Empire. With the prestigious Academies of the Core now under the control of the New Republic, the Imperial territories had to rely on conscription to fill out their ranks. Pellaeon's bridge was a shameful assembly of untrained novices bristling under his stern command. Five years after the Battle of Endor, the Empire was a quarter of its former size. They had been pushed far from the Core Worlds. It was during this bleak time that Pellaeon received a surprising communiqué from Thrawn, the last surviving Imperial Grand Admiral. The alien mastermind tactician chose Pellaeon's Star Destroyer to be his flagship during his campaign to retake the Core. Pellaeon served loyally at Thrawn's side as his trusted confidant. The captain overcame his initial reservations over serving an alien superior, since Thrawn proved his worth time and again by crafting intricate strategies that repeatedly confounded the New Republic. Under Thrawn's leadership, the Empire struck back, and reclaimed much of its lost territories. Thrawn's undoing, however, was trusting his Noghri underlings. When Thrawn was killed by a treacherous bodyguard, the Imperial momentum sputtered. It was like Endor all over again; Pellaeon taking command of the leaderless task force, trying to rein in the chaos after the death of a mastermind. Once again, opportunistic Imperial warlords pounced. Rallied by Thrawn's impressive push to the Core, they attacked Coruscant. They lacked the refinement of Thrawn's tactical mind, and rather than take the capital intact, they destroyed much of it. The Empire again fragmented, and a wasteful Imperial Civil War broke out. It was then that a cloned Emperor Palpatine returned to take control of the Empire, and Pellaeon continued to serve loyally, despite crushing losses. The New Republic defeated the Emperor's clone, and the remaining warships retreated to the Deep Core of the galaxy. There, High Admiral Teradoc created yet another fiefdom with a mighty fleet at his disposal, commanded by the newly promoted Vice Admiral Pellaeon. Admiral Daala was next in the lengthy series of Imperial successors. She gathered together the 13 ruling Imperial warlords at a conference, and executed them in cold blood. Daala appointed Pellaeon as her second-in-command, and then ordered an ill-planned attack on Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy. Pellaeon led the fleet of Victory Star Destroyers that pressed the assault, but the entire fleet was scattered aside by an incredibly powerful display of the Force. Daala was defeated, and Pellaeon stepped in to fill the power vacuum. As supreme commander of the remaining Imperial forces, Pellaeon gathered his assets from the Deep Core and expanded the Imperial presence in the Mid Rim. But it was clear that continued hostilities with the New Republic would only bring about the demise of the Empire. Fifteen years after the Battle of Endor, Pellaeon convinced the eight remaining moffs that the only way to survive was to reach a peace accord with the New Republic. During these tenuous times, a last ditch effort by Imperial loyalists employed an imposter as Grand Admiral Thrawn. With the aid of intelligence gathered by smuggler baron Talon Karrde, Pellaeon was able to expose the deception. He signed the historic armistice between the Imperial and New Republic forces, finally bringing the Galactic Civil War to an end. While the Imperial Remnant maintained many of the trappings of Palpatine's regime -- a strong military and limited venues of public expression -- it was far more progressive and devoid of the rampant injustices found during the height of the Empire's power. Slavery was abolished as were the extremes of anti-alien sentiment. The Imperial Remnant unobtrusively continued adhering to the strict tenets of the New Order, growing increasingly irrelevant to galactic affairs. During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Pellaeon recognized the threat the alien menace posed, even though their incursion had skirted past Imperial space. Despite some protests from the Moff Council, Pellaeon committed his forces to a joint Imperial-New Republic offensive at the Battles of Garqi and Ithor. Despite the best efforts of Pellaeon and New Republic Admiral Traest Kre'fey, the Yuuzhan Vong destroyed the ecology of Ithor. Shocked by the power of the attack, the Imperial Remnant recalled their assistance of the New Republic, and chose instead to sit out the invasion on the sidelines. It was a move the Moff Council would come to regret. They falsely believed the Imperial Remnant safe from attack, since it had been ignored for much of the invasion. The Yuuzhan Vong proved that assumption wrong, when it brutally attacked the Imperial worlds. Pellaeon was critically wounded in the attack, but the sudden arrival of a Jedi mission exploring the Unknown Regions saved his life. Jedi healers stabilized Pellaeon's condition, and Luke Skywalker and Jacen Solo helped Pellaeon expose infiltrators in the Imperial ranks and refocus Imperial efforts to assist the newly founded Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. _____________________________________________________________ Though lacking the strategic grace of other Imperial commanders, Admiral Daala nonetheless posed a real and dangerous threat to the young New Republic in the months following the resurrected Emperor's campaign of terror. Daala's rank is an anomaly in the predominantly male Imperial military. Despite her promising successes as a student and later, young officer, she was constantly passed over for promotion on the basis of gender alone. Graduating from the Imperial Academy, Daala's career was foundering. In frustration, she crafted a false computer identity and entered contests of strategy against battle-hardened veterans. She bested some of Carida's best instructors in these virtual engagements. Moff Tarkin of the Outer Rim Territories took notice of young Daala's determination and skill. He uncovered her true identity, and began to school her as his personal military protégé. It was Tarkin's influence that allowed Daala to ascend to the rank of Admiral, and he placed her in command of a quartet of Imperial Star Destroyers patrolling the Outer Rim Territories. Tarkin entrusted the protection of a top-secret military think-tank installation to Daala. Maw Installation, as it was called, was a weapons research facility like no other, sunken into a stable patch of space amidst the churning black holes of the Maw Cluster. In this remote base, some of the Empire's brightest scientific minds created designs for new Imperial weaponry, including the first in a series of Death Stars. Daala was given express orders to never abandon her post, to stay at Maw Installation, and to maintain communication silence until Tarkin returned. Tarkin never returned, having died in the explosion that consumed the Death Star. For over a decade Daala and her task force stood watch over Maw Installation. As it was Tarkin's most closely guarded secret, no other Imperials ever knew of it. The concentration of treacherous black holes made accidental discovery of the base an impossibility. For 11 years Daala's fighting forces atrophied. The sudden arrival of an Imperial shuttle was a shock to everyone at the station. It carried fugitives from the nearby Kessel prison complex: Han Solo, Chewbacca and Kyp Durron. From this group, Daala received a much needed update on the state of the galaxy. The trio broke free of the installation, and managed to capture one of the most powerful test-phase weapons platforms, the Sun Crusher. Daala, seeking revenge and a chance to finally make an impression, emerged from the Maw Cluster with her task force, eager to wage war with the New Republic. The decade of inactivity had its price. Though Daala was schooled in many strategic theories, her practical inexperience hampered her efforts. Using ten-year old tactics at a battle on Mon Calamari, Daala was easily thwarted by Admiral Ackbar. Before long, her task force of four destroyers was reduced to her flagship, the Gorgon. Bested, she joined the squabbling Imperial warlords holed up in the Deep Core Worlds. Seeing the inefficiencies of the Emperor's heirs in person again gave fuel to Daala's fiery temper. In disgust, she murdered most of the warlords, and consolidated command over the remaining Imperial military. With Gilad Pellaeon at her side, Daala took command of the Super Star Destroyer Knight Hammer and engaged in an ill-advised strike against Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy on Yavin 4. The battle ended poorly for Daala, with the Knight Hammer falling victim to sabotage. Broken, Daala abandoned her command to Pellaeon and then fled to the remote world of Pedducis Chorios. She settled into civilian life, leading a group of settlers on the distant world. A year later, the inhumane tactics of Moff Getelles brought Daala out of retirement. When she learned that Getelles had used an outbreak of the Death Seed plague to gain control of the Meridian sector, Daala threw in her lot with the forces that opposed him. Once the dust of that conflict had settled, Daala was not content to return to retired civilian life. She again journeyed to the Deep Core, amassing troops and war vessels in a bid to again challenge the New Republic. She attempted such a strike just prior to the Corellian insurrection. Her forces were repulsed by General Garm Bel Iblis. At great cost, Daala escaped the battle, and she has not been seen since.
